This book is packed with knowledge! Smoley is an excellent writer. He manages to present the history of Gnosticism completely and concisely. Replete with interesting twists, persons, beliefs, connections, doctrinal transmutations, Smoley's history is entertaining and enlightening. He explains everything clearly, and makes no overt judgments. You WILL understand the perspectives of everyone involved through the unbiased lens of a skilled history writer.No wasted pages here. No scholarly tangents. No boring side-notes or ramblings. Just a fresh writing style that whisks you through the fascinating history of Gnosticism. Everything known about Gnosticism awaits in this excellent work. Only pertinent belief systems and historical personages are delved into, all in the process of explaining and elucidating Gnosticism throughout the ages.I cannot recommend this book enough. Excellent style and scholarship combine to give you a worthwhile read.BUY IT.

This is a worthwhile book, a good introduction to Gnosticism, a good introduction on the history of hermetic traditions after the Gnostics. Smoley attempts to discuss how the inner traditions generated from the Gnostic tradition. In this I would give him four out of five stars. He endeavors to show how inner traditions originate from Gnostic philosophy and doctrine. While discussing the traditions after the Gnostics, however, it was not altogether clear how some of these traditions started with the Gnostics. What SMoley perhaps inadvertently succeeded in doing was to show the much clearer conflict between the esoteric and external traditions in religion. In this regard Smoley quotes from Guenon, a noted French metaphysician, that Western Christianity succeeded in the Middle Ages in gutting the mystical, inner, tradition, while in the Eastern Church the mystical nature of religion was much more accepted. This, then, is the real, eternal conflict, that of a tradition emphasizing a mystical union with God, the Godhead, and a relgious tradition mired in ritual devoid of meaning. It seemed to me that this tie-in with Gnosticism and Godhead could have been more fully discussed.Further, when explaining the modern traditions of Gnosticism, Smoley fails to mention a book which played a large role in reviving interest in Gnosticism. That book is The Gnostics and their Remains, by Charles William King, written in the late 1800's. This book is readily available, even on this website, and follows, curiously, the same format as Smoley's book. There are differences between the two books, but that difference is superficial. King was a gemologist, and many of the references in his book deal with those found on gems or stones. However, as I indicated,King covers the same subject areas and doctines as does Smoley. Manichism, Eqyptian religion, the Rosicrusions, the Masons and others are all discussed in Kng's book. It is amazing that Smoley does not mention this book.

If you have an interest in the development of Christianity, the Western Mystery Tradition or heresiology, this book by Richard Smoley proves to be an interesting read.The book itself is written at a level where only a basic knowledge of Christian history and theology is required to get a grasp of the thesis of the book. Smoley takes the reader through nearly 2200 years of Gnostic thought and history, starting with Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism and running through modern times, including the popular perceived offshoots such as the Albigensian Cathars, the Rosicrucians, the Freemasons, the Knights Templar all the way to Jung, Blavatsky, the DaVinci Code and the Matrix.While he tries to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short book, you get the flavor of Gnostic themes as an ever evolving, ever present element interweaving itself through Christian history. Smoley discusses not only the history, but the theology and the psychology of the various Gnostic themes, explores and discusses common information like the Nag Hammadi library and the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as reviews basic mainstream Christian theology in a compare and contrast exercise including a look at "mainstream" Christian (both Western and Orthodox) mysticism and prayer practices.If you have an interest in this topic, this is a good read.

This book is easily the most comprehensive, easy to read, well researched book on esoteric spirituality. All of this in the space of 256 pages! The index is thorough (have you noticed that more and more non-fiction books are being published without indices?! Not this one, I am happy to report!)and the chapters are well organized. The book serves well either as an introduction to esoteric/gnostic spiritualities, as a historical survey of the history of those spiritualities, or as an up-to-date series on recent developments in this area of knowledge. Richard Smoley is an authority on these matters and has done a marvelous job with this book. I was especially interested in and appreciative of the section of the book that discusses A Course in Miracles. This one is a "must have" book! Highly recommended.

The book is well written and does a good job tying Gnostic thoughts to other historical spiritual movements and individuals. I held back from a five star rating only because I would have enjoyed more in-depth writing on the actual so-called gnostics themselves, perhaps more on the different gnostic writings like the Nag Hammadi library. I think the author, after publishing and reading so many books wrote this to "add to the pile" of existing literature. However, this may not line up with his audience (but maybe I'm a less familiar exception here). All in all, the author covers the scope of his purpose very well in a way that is accessible, fluid, and directional in what seems like a challenging and nebulous topic.

I want to like this book. However, it reads like a high school paper trying to make a word count requirement. Every chapter is bloated. Almost all of the ideas are copied from better sources. Could easily be 80% shorter. Not sure I learned anything.

All this book does is that it tries to lure to sign up for their courses on product school. They are just promoting their school without getting into the specifics of how to become a good product manager. It seems that they have just copy-pasted ideas from other books on product design, marketing etc. It is too much fluffy. The entire book could be written in 5 pages. For instance, they talk about creating hypothesis for opportunity at a company, and then validating the hypothesis. Instead of this, it would have been better if the authors would have focused on resources to transition from non-PM to PM.I am a PM at a tech firm, and hated this book. I don't write reviews unless the book is really bad.

SPOILER ALERT: A 3.5.I enjoyed getting to know Kinky's family, however, the narration style was disruptive and the story jerked along in fits and starts. I enjoyed the scenes with Maureen (Kinky) and her sister Fidelma. I'd really like to see Fidelma pop up in a future story or two.How sad that Kinky had such a short time with her husband. Add to that the fact she lives on the opposite end of the country from her family, whom she loves very much, and it just adds to the melancholia of this particular book. I really like Kinky's character and I was disheartened to see how she ended up so far from those she loves best.I also enjoyed the bits of Irish legends and folklore scattered throughout.I guess this book doesn't rate as high for me as the previous entries because of the disruptive narrative style and because I wished Kinky had enjoyed a happier adult life surrounded by her family.

'An Irish Country Girl' is the 4th book in Patrick Taylor's "Irish Country" series. I strongly recommend reading the first three books first. 'An Irish Country Doctor', 'An Irish Country Village', and 'An Irish Country Christmas', in that order. You should really get to know Kinky Kincaid (the doctor's housekeeper) as the woman she is today, before taking this pause in the stories of Dr. O'Reilly and Dr. Laverty's adventures and misadventures as country doctors back in 1960's Ireland. 'An Irish Country Girl' takes a step away from the doctor's, and gives us the charming tale of Kinky's girlhood, growing up in County Cork before moving to upland County Ulster and settling into Ballybuckleboo. A few questions are answered here, especially Kinky's ability to be fey at times.As Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, Caitlin "Kitty" O'Hallorhan, and young Dr. Barry Laverty make their way out of the house on Christmas day to Ballybuckleboo House for the marquis' Christmas Day Open House, housekeeper Kinky Kincaid welcomes the visiting children with hot black current juice and sweet mince pies ... and the promise of a tale of ghosts and spirits. Therefore, Kinky begins, with a tale from her own youth.She tells of Conner MacTaggart, and how he cuts down a Blackthorn tree, even after being warned by Kinky's mother that the "Doov Shee", or dark fairies, live under Blackthorns. Kinky, known as Maureen back then, knew her older sister Fidelma, was sweet on Conner and planning to marry him. The story isn't a happy one, as Conner angers the Doov Shee and the Queen of the Doov Shee takes her revenge. The children leave satisfied at Kinky's tale, but as Kinky continues to prepare the doctor's Christmas dinner, her thoughts continue to wander back to the time of her girlhood, Fidelma's loss of Conner, and how Kinky met her own young husband Paudeen.It was great to get to know Kinky better, but as I said you'll want to introduce yourself to her in the first books. It's better to know where she is now first, before getting acquainted with her as a girl. There's a lot to the tale, and the book is a fast read just as the previous 'Irish Country' books are. There was a little slowing at the end, drawing out the finale, but that would be the only grouse over the story. Taylor has the ability to absorb you into his world, take you all the way to Ireland and really feel what it was like for Kinky during that timeframe in a sometimes volatile place. Reading about Kinky made me feel young again too! Taylor is a talented and knowledgeable writer, speeding you through the pages with fully fleshed characters that you find yourself caring a great deal about.Included in the back of the book are some of Kinky's recipes and a glossary of the Irish terms used in the book. Now I can't wait for the next book, and get back to Dr's O'Reilly and Laverty with their busy medical practice and budding romances. Thank you, Mr. Taylor, for another great installment in 'Irish Country'.

I won the 9th book in this wonderful group of books about Fingal O' Reilly: Irish Doctor is the title of that volume. So taken was I by the story of an older widowed GP in the Northern Irish fictional village of Ballybucklebo and the recently graduated new doctor, Barry Laverty that I went to the first volume to start the series. This, An Irish Country Village, is #2 and continues into the 6th month of Barry's tenure as a conditional member of Fingal's practice. If all goes well after a year, Fingal is going to offer Barry a permanent position.Through #1, Barry, not really used to a small country practice and the intimate relationships with the community, has gotten his sea legs and is feeling fairly adequate though inexperienced. Nevertheless by this installment he has overcome his nervousness working with the bluff former sailor and has even adapted some of his elder's methods of interacting with the rural patients that make up most of their clientele. During this tale, however, an elder has died after Barry's diagnosis and treatment and it is possible that the widow is going to file a malpractice suit against him. Even without that threat the loss of the patient has rocked some of the inhabitants' confidence in the young newcomer's abilities. So, in Barry's eyes, he has to go back to square one to gain back their belief and has to depend upon a pathologist's findings to avert the suit.In addition, Barry's sweetheart, Patricia is trying to receive a full boat scholarship to study at Cambridge University for the next three years. If she passes the exam he worries that such a long separation will destroy the young relationship that he has with a woman he's pretty sure is the love of his life. Should he stay in Ballybucklebo if she succeeds or seek a place in England?All the while, we encounter the people of the village, the trials and tribulations both in health and in daily life and we move with Barry and Fingal among them. It is a warm and welcoming village with gossip and antagonisms, love and death, gambling and drinking, marriages and new life. It is a pleasant place to be and like Barry it would be hard for the reader to choose to leave.Looking forward to #3--what is going to happen to Barry and Patricia's relationship and their careers? And who is this Kitty woman who has re-entered Fingal's life? Oh, and what new recipes will Kiki provide at the end of the next story. How are Arthur Guinness, the wellie napping dog, and Lady MacBeth, the diva cat, doing?These books can be read alone with no problem but let me tell you, if you like Irish folk and country tales, once you've read one, you'll want to read them all.

I like the characters and their interaction. The young doctor's new girlfriend of one month and he have declared love and and are separating for three years for her to gdt a degree in Cambridge as the book closes. Two whole books fill the space of six weeks time. Twelve or more books will have to happen for them to get married and live together. It looks doubtful. Meanwhile the old dr (56) is connecting with an old girlfriend and that looks more promising.

I bought this book for my 9 year old daughter since she just had a tonsillectomy, and needs drawing/crafts to keep her busy while she is healing. She was really excited at first and we sat down at the table to look through the book together. The illustrations are great....but that’s about it. She wanted to make a landspeeder, and we got about four steps in before we set the paper aside to try something easier. We read through the “basics” at the beginning but even the basics were pretty difficult?! So we decide to try a light saber. How hard could that be? We couldn’t even finish the light saber either. Mind you, I am a college educated individual with two degrees and I have some experience with origami (little animals and such) but no luck here. The instructions were vague and would go from a basic “mountain”or “valley” fold to a supremely difficult fold with no explanation as how to get from #1 to #2. This book is definitely not for a little kid or even most adults. We’re going to try again when her dad is home from work and maybe he’ll understand the instructions better. I may update my review if we can figure it out.

Not for beginners!!!! You have been warned. One really needs the power of the force to figure out all the folds and nuances of these detailed origami projects.

I bought this for my boys ages 10,8,and 7 for Christmas. It is now April and they are still paper-folding. Great gift! They are still using the book and have been inspired to try other forms of origami.

Don't buy this for kids--and not for any adults who do not have a lot of experience in origami. These are super difficult and I feel the pictures often skip steps. What a frustrating afternoon and a waste of my money. I am so disappointed. I thought the paper to fold with would make simple folded projects look amazing. Instead we have a book we cannot use. If I had bought this at a brick and mortar I would return it for my money back.

So hard!!!!! My his band and I were Stumped at the x-wing. The illustrations for the folds were vague. You have to go back to the beginning to look at what type of fold to do. For example, do a squash fold, do a mountain fold. But then the next illustration is so vague you aren’t sure if you did the previous several part fold correct. Ended up with a sad kid (7 yrs old) and frustrated parents.

So here's the deal. I bought this for my Star Wars-obsessed 4-year old who has found a new liking in origami (i.e. folding paper). However, these folds are pretty hard for me as a parent much less a little guy. If you're good at origami or WANT to be good at origami, sure. Pick it up! There are a few simple ones for the younger crowd but they're not real detailed and he wants to do the really fun ones. They're TOUGH. Just be prepared but overall, very fun book even if you don't accomplish the creations. :)

My son loves this book. He has been making things constantly since he got it 3 weeks ago. The instructions are simple enough that a middle-school student can follow them and make the origami on their own without help. They give you 2 of each decorated paper in case you do make a mistake. Also has some fun Star Wars trivia and other Star Wars information that the kids enjoy. A great buys for fans of Star Wars and origami.

I first bought one of these books for an xmas present and then found out that another person liked origami and was having a birthday. The included pages are very nice and the designs are totally fun. Be aware though that many are probably not as cool when reproduced without the papers from this book. Still, it is a great gift for a Star Wars folder.

About the Author

A native of Los Angeles, Justin Henderson spent much of his childhood and young adulthood surfing the California beaches. After his graduation from California State University, Northridge, his career took him to several locations across the country. He worked as an architectural journalist in New York City, and later moved to Seattle, where he worked as a freelance travel and design writer. It was in Seattle that he took up windsurfing, reviving his long-dormant surfing skills and his passion for the ocean. Justin then moved with his wife and daughter to Sayulita, 30 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. In his years living there, Justin learned to love Mexico even more than he did as a child when his family would vacation on Lake Chapala every summer. He is currently working on the latest edition of Moon Puerto Vallarta as well as a memoir of his five years in Sayulita, tentatively called Paradise on the Five Year Plan.Justin has written guidebooks on destinations ranging from Costa Rica to Los Angeles, and now Oaxaca, as well as six murder mysteries featuring a female travel writer and photographer which are set on Caribbean islands, in Costa Rica, and all over Mexico.Justin and his family recently returned to Seattle, though he considers anywhere near the Pacific to be home. His first purchase there was a new wetsuit.

Great guide! I got a detailed list of sightseeing places to visit, history behind, etc. Just what I needed. Don't get what people are complaining about, especially saying that it's catering to older and richer travelers? If they needed info on hotel and restaurants recommendations ..who gets it from the guide books these days anyways when there's tripadvisor, booking and a gazillion of other websites with up to date reviews and pictures?? I skip right through those sections. For me guidebooks are where I get detailed information on all the places to see and do in the area, and this book covers it all! For everything else, there are travel websites and discussion forums.

As others point out, navigating the book can have its modest challenges. But overall, the information contained herein was very reliable and guided us through an excellent week in Oaxaca. One specific recommendation I would propose for the next edition, is a focus on the cemeteries (yes, the cemeteries) for Dia de Muertos: advice on visiting them by oneself or the various cemetery tours that are available.

We went to Oaxaca for a week and this book was successfully relied on when needed. However, because we already had a booked Air B'n'B where we stayed for the duration and we already had a good idea how we wanted to spend our time, the guide didn't get used as much it might have otherwise. Even so, we referred to it maybe ten times and it never let us down.

Would like more medical info, more festival info. That being said, it is the best book we've found on Oaxaca -- good map of plaza, etc.

Very Informative summary of tourist opportunities in Oaxaca. It was a big help in planning my trip, both in choosing what to see in the City of Oaxaca, and where to go in the mountains. The ecotourism section was very helpful. I cannot speak to its coverage of the coast or the Isthmus because I did not go to those areas.

What a great book this has been in planning my upcoming trip to Oaxaca. I found the day-by-day itinerary for Oaxaca city incredibly helpful in planning my days. Then I filled in the outline with additional sites in each geographic area.

Very useful guide. I recently spent a week in Oaxaca, and this book had great suggestions for sites and restaurantsI lik, both in Oaxaca city and around the state of Oaxaca. I liked how it included more cultural information in the preface and in the individual site descriptions to add nuance and meaning to the places it recommended. Pretty solid maps too.
