The best test of a good read--to me--is the number of questions with which the book leaves me, and how my mind and body respond to the ending chapter. For this book, the overriding question sitting on my soul is: How can I go on without these characters in my immediate life?As for my cerebral and physical response to the book, well, this exquisitely written story literally knocked me out and as I finished the last sentence, I could not stand. The characters surrounded me and I simply had to sit and wait until they lifted away and permitted me to re-enter reality. That's how powerful every character and story, for it is one story made of many, affected me upon the finish.

People of the Book: A NovelWonderful story! Not very deep or developed characters, and not an unknown format - the plot moves back and forth from the present to various historical times when a book, which is actually the protagonist of the story, plays an important role in peoples' lives. This book, the Sarajevo Haggadah, actually exists, but the author gives it a very creative history and invents a myriad of characters and stories that are involved in transferring the book from here to there, each leaving a small sign or mark within its bindings and pages. What is interesting is that the (fictional) history of the book is told only to the reader, while the character who identifies all the clues of the book's journey through the centuries has no way of knowing how the specific findings she uncovers (a few grains of salt, an old blood stain, and more) came to be in the book. While the story surrounds a Jewish text, and clearly it is tied to Jewish history, it's a universal story. An intriguing yet easy read. Highly recommend it.

There are always those books that have been on your wishlist for years but you couldn't rationalize paying the full price for it; "People of the Book" was one of those books for me. I remember seeing this book in the bookstores back when I was in high school, and being totally drawn to the book art. I have to admit that I totally misinterpreted the cover. I most definitely thought it was making allusions to the the Egyptian God Horus. It is actually a wing of a moth, for those of you who are like me and the obvious alludes you.As with many New York Times Bestsellers, I am skeptical of their true merit. Not necessarily because these books aren't worthy of such titles, but rather because I always end up a little disappointed. I think I get disillusioned with what a "New York Times Bestseller" actually means in regards to the quality of the book. The "bestseller" title gives me high expectations for the book, but I should instead take it with a grain of salt given that it doesn't necessarily correlate with how much I will enjoy the book."People of the Book", as is apparent from the title, is the story of the multitude of people who were involved in the creation and/or safe-guarding of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah [a Jewish text].As was mentioned in a previous review, I absolutely love historical fiction pieces that intertwine multiple perspectives and storylines into the main plot. I believe that this sort of writing style for historical fiction is the most effective, as long as the transitions from past to present are done effectively. "People of the Book" did an excellent job with this and I genuinely enjoyed when the book had me time travel to unknown times and places. I would go so far as to say that I was even disappointed when the book took you back to the "present" main plot line. I, unfortunately, felt that the main plot line took away from the main focus of the book: the Haggadah. Particularly due to the love story between two of the main characters; it took away from the rest of the novel, and was unnecessary in the context of this story. The side stories, on the other hand, were perfection. My personal favorite was the last side-tale in which the artist behind the beautiful illuminations of the Haggadah was revealed. The construction of the plot line was artfully done, and I felt that the author did an excellent job in transitioning between the main plot line and the side stories. I particularly appreciated the chronological order she chose to take with these side narratives. In addition, Geraldine Brooks did not necessarily directly connect all the parts of the story together; she left a little mystery to it and gave just enough information for the reader to be able to discern it themselves.I am glad that I was finally able to read this book, but in the realm of historical fiction novels, this was not one of my favorites. I just felt that the main plot line took away from the side narratives, and there were parts of the main storyline that seemed extraneous. However, the central themes of the book are important ones, and Geraldine Brooks highlights them at every occasion she gets. The main theme being that historical artifacts are central to our history and their importance should be recognized. Unlike us, they are able to survive time and tell their stories to future generations, if only we would listen.

The story is quite complex made even more so by the switches between narrators and time periods. However, the underlying history of a Jewish book which escaped burning during the Inquisition, the exile of the Jews from Spain, and other historical events, including Hitler, the Holocaust, and others which should have spelled the end for the book. The key was the passion of various unrelated persons who risked their lives to save it. The novel is based on a true incident however, the individual vignettes were creative fiction invented to answer the unanswerable question of how it could have happened. It held my attention and always seemed to be rooted in real people. I've been interested in history and especially the history of the Jews during their diaspora. I think anyone with a similar interest will find the book provides details of that period which are less available than books that concentrate on World War II. I highly recommend it. Its worth the sometimes struggle of trying to keep up with the back and forth of time and place.

This book was recommended to me several years ago and I didn't get around to reading it until recently. So glad that I did! It was a good read -- hard to put down, in fact, but it had some real depth to it as well. In the course of the story, we learn about religious persecution and how it damages both the persecuted and the persecutors. These portions of the book were panful to read. The book also includes some description of religious tolerance, however, and the positive effects of that on the lives of all. I found it especially appropriate for the current time and the specter of religious intolerance looming. There are lots of different characters in this book as well as different historical periods. Ms. Brooks made me care about all of them. Her writing drew me into each period and provided a greater understanding of each.

Review

★ “Cheeky humor and prideful asides will have listeners in stitches. A closer-to-perfect pairing couldn’t be imagined. Everyone wins!” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))★ “The earnest gravity of the fighters’ quests paired with the mundane setting and melodramatic tone are perfectly balanced to produce a brand of purely absurd, sidesplitting humor that kids will gobble up.” (Booklist (starred review))★ “Daywalt’s text, set in a range of expressive fonts, combines the heightened verbosity of vintage action comics with the swagger of backyard scuffles, and Rex composes wildly dramatic battle scenes against backdrops of thunderstorms, erupting volcanoes, and missile launches. Forget reading aloud—this story demands bombastic, full-volume performances.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))★ “While kids will snicker reading this on their own, it’s perfect for a guffawing share with younger sibs or buddy read, followed, of course, by a rousing game of Rock Paper Scissors.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review))★ “Laugh-out-loud funny and outrageous at times, this read-aloud will have listeners jumping out of their seats. This is the sort of story that makes children love to read.” (School Library Journal (starred review))’The title and cover image are enough to get you giggling all on their own. But the epic battles depicted by children’s book powerhouses Drew Daywalt and Adam Rex are sure to have us in stitches.” Best Books of the Month (Brightly)

My five-year-old grandson loves this book. I ordered it after seeing it recommended for 4-7 year-olds and was pleased with the result. My grandson did not know the game, so I taught it to him before reading him the book (yes, he wanted to wait to see what I chose, so that he could win!). The made-up legend is presented as an origin story for three great heroes: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. I would recommend reading it as if you were announcing professional wrestling--i.e., just match your voice and intonation to the print size and you should be fine. Read in a normal, quiet, reading voice and it would be a bit of a snore. But "ROCK IS VICTORIOUS" read with excitement and a wee bit of volume brings giggles. What also brings giggles are words like "underpants"--just saying the word is likely to get any four or five year-year-old dissolving into shocked laughter. My grandson also adopted Paper's watch phrase, "Wait. What!?" Which then allowed his mother and I to explain what a "private joke" was.If you're looking for lessons-to-be-learned, you'll have to work hard. Here are a few you could derive from the text:1. Winning all the time stops being fun if you don't have a challenger equal to your skills.2. Different people have different skills where they excel (Rock wins on pure strength, Paper by cleverness, Scissors with her unexpected snipping action).3. Competition does not have to be angry--after Rock, Paper, and Scissors finally get together the continue a "glorious" and "joyous" competition because they finally have a chance of losing. But, I had to work hard to pull those out, and it would probably ruin the experience to pull out morals."The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors" might be low on lessons learned, but it is high on delight.

I do not understand why the reviews are so good. I wish I had read the lower star reviews before purchasing as it’s $6 to return. I would not even give this book as a gift! I do not like the language in this book and I get aggression, name calling and winning at the cost of squashing others as the most recognizable messages. Definitely not appropriate for my 4.5 and 6 yo kids. I recommend checking this book out cover to cover in the library or store first before purchasing.

I'm a Pre-K through 5th grade librarian. This book is awesome! The older kids especially like it, but even my Pre-K kids know what rock-paper-scissors is: a non-confrontational way of resolving a dispute. This is a wonderful read-aloud!

I dont usually go out of my way to review a product....but this book is just so fantastic! I love this author and the pictures are great. Anyone who would give this book less than 5 stars has no personality! A must buy for all kids! I will be buying more to give as gifts!

My daughter mentioned this book after school one day then again a couple weeks later and tried to recite the whole book from memory to her brother so I decided to buy it. We read it together at bedtime last night and we were ALL (me too) laughing hysterically! We finished the evening have rock, paper, scissors battles. It was so much fun. My kids are F7 M3.5 M2. I highly recommend this book!

I ordered this for my 6 year old son a few days ago. He is all about this book. I have read it several times, and he has also helped me read it. He loves the part about the fuzzy little butt. He cracks up and it in turn makes me laugh as well. His older brother who is 10 likes this book too. I highly recommend it. Very cute, silly and the pictures are great as well!!

Every child should read this book. Every parent will truly enjoy reading this book with their children. Seriously creative. We were entertained!!

Awesome book to be read using different voices. "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?" asks the Rock. Fun to say to my 5 year old like I'm a professional wrestler straining my voice. Even though we don't watch wrasslin' - I grew up with the 4 horsemen and Rick Flair's wooo!! - so it helps me read the book like there's a match going on. Great book. Better than I expected.

The Gospel according to Science Fiction: From the Twilight Zone to the Final Frontier

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Aliens, spaceships and giant robots may not seem to have much in common with matters spiritual, but in the mind of Harvard-trained writer and blogger McKee, they hold important theological insights. McKee's knowledge of science fiction is impressive. He quotes esoteric short stories from the 1930s alongside contemporary sci-fi and fantasy films, showing an encyclopedic command of the genre. It serves him well as he combs the genre for examples of religious themes such as sin, faith, religious experience, the apocalypse and the afterlife. The author all too briefly touches upon the issue of science and faith, but this can be forgiven in a book primarily about science fiction. "The main goal of SF [science fiction]," writes McKee, "... is to show us how we can face the future and overcome the new challenges that our changing world may develop." By utilizing a solid theological background and culling the world of science fiction literature and films for help, McKee illustrates that organized religion should have a similar goal: "It must be willing to face whatever changes may come and adapt itself to the spiritual questions of the future." This fascinating hybrid of theology and sci-fi is creative, lucid and contains impressive scholarship. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This book consists mostly of synopses. Thus, serves well only as a reservoir and a round-up of plots. The Author ingores evolution of the genre and omits theoretical papers, in the result each chapter follows somewhat obscured, temporary and chaotic logic. There is Ketterer at least, but very briefly summarized. No Kermode. No Brummett and others. The profit: vast choice of plots, can't deny that (one to mention is the lack of non-English writers, there are few, Lem, thanks for that. But no Strugatsky brothers?) I got irritated by few obsessively repated sentences. After 100 pages of reading you begin to take account of sentences like: "Few SF stories have embraced the concept of a divine plan as completely as...", as really repetitive. Nevertheless, the book contains very good, interesting insights, only you have to look for them carefully.

A fascinating, readable, entertaining, clever, and comprehensive look at science fiction's treatment of religion, spirituality, and God. A great book.

I was not careful when I purchased this book. I thought that the "Gospel" part of the title was tongue in cheek. It wasn't. I'm glad I made this mistake because I used it as an exercise in realizing how much people read into books exactly what they want to see. The author has read and seen a powerful amount of SciFi. No doubt about that. I haven't seen or read one quarter as much but based on the books and films that I have seen I was surprised at how christianity seemed to crop up in these books and films. I'm a christian but I did not see this viewpoint in the books and films that I saw and also made their way into this book. I did see God-the Creator and have been curious about other viewpoints on this. The search for the creator in SciFi (some - not all) is fascinating. But this is not the book to read if you share this curiosity. As far as saying that SciFi may be a peek into how we will think in the future, let's not forget the Fiction in Science Fiction. If we accept that this is true then why not apply this theory to other writing/film genres: horror, slasher movies, porn. Let's hope this is not the case.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. McKee seems to have taken all of his theology training, as well as thousands of hours of reading and viewing SciFi, to come up with a magnum opus. I kept on expecting him to leave out some major or theologically significant minor work of science fiction, but he always came through. McKee helpfully breaks down science fiction into various theological categories, from the nature of God to the afterlife to the presence of a soul, and looks through many examples in-depth to gain an understanding of how the genre as a whole treats theology. This is not a simple, dry list, but rather McKee integrates each movie and book into the discussion, weighing the treatment of the theology as well as the new ideas that the work bring to the table.Though he obviously comes from a Christian standpoint, he is very balanced in his treatment, looking positively at pro-theistic and anti-theistic standpoints, as well as works embracing Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu perspectives. You will never again be able to look at the science fiction genre as anti-religious, or even irreligious. (One juicy tidbit is McKee's very convincing revelation that science fiction is simply the modern aspect of the ancient apocalyptic religious genre.) The primary drawback of this book is that I now have a whole host of new books to read, even though I decided to peruse only about 5% of the books mentioned.

Gabriel McKee sets out to explore how science fiction views theological issues, such as the nature of God, creation, souls, sin, and the afterlife, through how these have been portrayed in science fiction novels, television and film. Through the book the author uses his depth of science fiction knowledge to illustrate the connections that he has found between science fiction and religion. McKee uses illustrations from mainstream science fiction, like Battlestar Galactica (2003), Star Trek, Star Wars, the Matrix and the Twilight Zone, as well as science fiction that hardcore students of the genre will appreciate, like, Bova, Bradbury, Dick, Herbert, Heinlein, Silverberg and Vonnegut. From the moment that I started reading McKee had me hooked. Admittedly, I am a big science fiction fan. Not just film either. My good friend Alvaro Zinos-Amaro made certain of this by providing a gift of the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One, 1929-1964, which opened my eyes to the progress that science fiction has made through the years and also to the way that science fiction speaks to the zeitgeist.Today, we are inundated by science fiction focused on the end of the world because we are worried about it. I am convinced that a student of history could read the science fiction of the day and get a better understanding of the concerns of the generation that they study than by using university history texts. In the same way that science fiction is focused on the same things that all people are, it is only natural that we find science fiction to be preoccupied with religion. What more important question can there be than, "Is there a God?" Followed closely behind by, "If so what or who is it?" These are the starting points of any human's quest to find purpose. "Why am I here?" "How do I live?" or even, "Am I real?"McKee's book is an enjoyable lesson in the history of science fiction that deals with religion. Fans of science fiction and people of faith will undoubtably enjoy this book immensly as I did.

Featured Recipe: No Cream-No Cry Penne Alla Vodka The dirty little secret about Penne alla Vodka is not the vodka but the hefty amount of heavy cream. Vodka is colorless, odorless, and without much flavor—not really attributes of a superstar ingredient. It’s the combination of cream and tomato sauce that gives this dish its signature flavor. The traditional cream is swapped here for low-fat Greek yogurt. --Rocco DiSpirito Ingredients 8 ounces whole- wheat penne 2 cups Rocco’s How Low Can You Go Low-Fat Marinara Sauce (page 206 of Now Eat This!) or store-bought low- fat marinara sauce Pinch of crushed red pepper One 7-ounce container 2% Greek yogurt 1 cup chopped fresh basil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 6 tablespoons grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (Serves 4) Directions 1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to the package directions, about 9 minutes; drain. 2. While the pasta is cooking, bring the marinara sauce and crushed red pepper to a simmer in a large nonstick saute pan over medium heat. Cook the sauce, stirring it occasionally with a heat-resistant rubber spatula, until it is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove the saute pan from the heat. 3. Stir about 1/2 cup of the marinara sauce into the yogurt until smooth (this tempers it and prevents the yogurt from curdling). Then whisk the yogurt mixture back into the marinara sauce. 4. In a large serving bowl, toss the sauce with the drained penne and the basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle the cheese on top, and serve. Healthy Tips Whole-wheat pasta has a dense texture that makes it a little tougher than regular pasta. Some people like that chewiness; some don’t. If you’re in the latter category, overcook it a bit. Toward the end of the cooking time, keep testing it until it’s as tender as you like it. But there are so many beloved--and believe it or not, unhealthy--seared tuna dishes out there in the restaurant world that I thought I should offer at least one healthy version. The tuna is never the problem. Tuna is rich in nutrients, low in fat, delicious, and just a good bet all around. It’s the stuff that’s put on top that’s the problem--anything from seared foie gras to deep-fried tempura crispies. Sure, it tastes great, but those additions turn a healthful dish into an artery-clogging one. --Rocco DiSpirito Ingredients 4 sushi-grade tuna steaks (3 ounces each) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Nonstick cooking spray 12 ounces haricots verts or slim green beans, trimmed Juice and grated zest of 1 lemon 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons wasabi paste 4 scallions (white and green parts), sliced thin on the diagonal 3 tablespoons black sesame seeds (Serves 4) Directions 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Preheat a grill or grill pan over high heat. 2. Season the tuna steaks with salt and pepper to taste, and spray them lightly with cooking spray. When the grill is hot, add the tuna and cook for 1 1/2 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer the tuna to a platter and allow it to rest, uncovered, for 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cook the haricots verts in the boiling water until they are just tender, about 3 minutes; drain. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the lemon juice and zest, garlic, and wasabi paste. Add the haricots verts, scallions, and sesame seeds. Toss to coat, adding salt and pepper to taste. 5. Thinly slice the tuna. Fan each portion onto each of 4 plates. Pile a mound of dressed haricots verts on top of the tuna, and serve. Fat: 3.8 g Calories: 166 Protein: 23 g Carbohydrates: 11 g Cholesterol: 38 mg Fiber: 5 g Sodium: 211 mg

From Booklist

Popular television chef DiSpirito’s latest cookbook retools diet cookery in hope of convincing even the most stubborn gourmand to cut calories yet still maintain a regimen of delicious, satisfying foods not immediately perceived as diet food. To accomplish this, he takes up underused ingredients such as Greek yogurt, whole-wheat pasta, cauliflower, and reduced-sugar ketchup, whose benefits go beyond mere calorie trimming to add fiber and enhance nutrition. DiSpirito’s goal is to reduce calories in popular “comfort foods” to less than 350 per serving, and his methods yield some astonishing calorie reductions. Onion rings fall from about 1,800 calories to 342. Fried chicken loses more than half. In addition to building in lower fats, DiSpirito does his best to lower cholesterol, carbohydrate, and sodium levels as well. The frustrated gourmet compelled to address weight loss will thrill to DiSpirito’s novel approach, but it requires thorough pantry restocking. --Mark Knoblauch

These are some fantastic recipes and tips; all are geared toward helping with weight loss in terms of calories and fat, but the food will appeal to dieters and non-dieters, alike. Rocco's trademark is recipes with lots of flavor, and this book doesn't disappoint. It's great for people with food sensitivities (this isn't true of all the recipes, but there are plenty to choose from). For example, it's got recipes for chocolate chip cookies made with cannellini beans rather than flour, and brownies made with black beans rather than flour. One of my favorite all-time "hacks" in the book is the onion/garlic puree. I've never been a fan of sautéing onions and garlic because the smell permeates our small house and because I'm talented at burning things -- but you can prepare this puree in the microwave, with all the flavor intact and no added fat.The book includes plenty of appealing photos to show you how the recipes should look. It's inspirational in that it makes you want to cook these healthier foods, including low-calorie but satisfying comfort foods. Can you believe he came up with recipes for low-cal chicken that actually is fried; low-cal mayonnaise that tastes even better than "real" mayonnaise; low-fat bleu cheese dressing; and low-fat ribs?I have several Rocco Dispirito cookbooks, and they are all fantastic. This book is no exception. You don't have to be on a diet to appreciate it.

Basically if you have a few different ingredients, he uses them over and over and over again. It is basically a replacement type recipe book and the replacement items are awful. Instead of mashed potatoes, lets used pureed cauliflower for example. Someone like me cannot eat cauliflower; so, can't eat this. Many of his recipes use high cellulose type vegetables; which, I cannot digest and would leave me writhing in pain before throwing it back up. Those that don't use things that I detest. Most of his recipes call for cilantro or parsley. Can't stand either of them. So there goes half of the book. You can leave them out; but, then what do you substitute in their place. You are therefor left with partial recipes and generally starting over from scratch. What is the point in buying a book of partial recipes? So if you have ground turkey, chicken, lean beef, and a bunch of vegetables, just play spin the wheel and you generally get one of the recipes. add whole wheat pasta and/or a sauce for basically the rest. The other thing I find disgusting, is he has his own recipes for making alfredo, pasta sauce, etc.; but, instead of just calling them that, he has to name them after himself. I find this very egotistical. The sauces themselves, again are basically substitution based and do not seem very original or tasty to me. If I could return this book I would just on that alone. But, I digress. Basically his sauces are just substitution based again. You can get substitutions off of the internet for free. My description is a bit simplistic and I apologize for that; but, it is hard to really describe without taking pictures of the recipes to post and if I did that, someone would be screaming about copy infringement. Save your money, I am going to get this wrapped up and will give it to someone for Christmas and get it out of my sight before I get any more disgusted by it.

The reason I did not give this cookbook 5 stars is this; some people may be disappointed if they cannot find the brands he uses. I had read comments he made about his recipes, the process he used to adjust the caloric count, and was ready for specific brands suggested. He wanted the best flavor he could achieve using less fat, sugars, and salt. And he did that by trying out different brands. He is a chef so he has experience to bring to a cookbook that I wanted. I recently had an aortic dissection emergency surgery, found out I have high blood pressure and need to change my way of life concerning diet. But I am a good cook and want the best flavor I can get out of recipes and keep to a healthier diet. (Also, foods that my husband will enjoy without feeling cheated) I want to feel satisfied too, not hungry because I ate 'healthy' vegetables and 'rabbit' food and find myself grazing later in the evening. These recipes do that. I am very pleased but shopping for the particular brands is challenging if you don't live near markets that carry much ethnic variety or just much variety in brands. I find what I need at Whole Foods Market, MOMs and the Common Market which are all over 30 minutes from my house. I can substitute with what I find at Food Lion, Safeway or Giant but I don't know that I am getting the 'maximum'flavor from the recipe that he got. That's okay, it's still great. I will order more of his cookbooks. Just a side note, not pertaining to Rocco...Rachael Ray actually has recipes that are filling and healthier than her normal cooking. She's not a chef but is one good cook. I have been amazed at her healthier recipes.

Ok I’ve been going thru this book and this recipe alone( ribs pic attached) makes every recipe questionable in terms of calorie counts. I smoke ribs and meats all the time. How this recipe supposedly cuts the calories by 2/3’s from 990 to 330 calories? Really? How utterly stupid does this guy think people are. There’s plenty other recipes that raised my eyebrows but this one validated how bogus the calorie reductions are.

OH MY GOSH! If I'd only had this book as I was growing up...It probably depends on the girl’s maturity as to when you give it to them but I think my daughter who's 10 1/2 is at the perfect age. There are quotes from young "mini-women" as she calls them ages 8-12. There are "tests" they can take to identify where they're at in their physical and emotional development as well as questions like, "Have you ever felt this way...", but it assures them that even if they have, or haven't, it's fine.... This way the girls feel totally "normal" where ever they're at. It also explains that this is normal to feel, but it points them to God's truth and quotes the Bible all over (without being boring.) It talks about periods and protection choices in that and even mention how they might feel if it starts while they are away from home, like school or something, but how it’s no big deal to ask another woman for a pad or something because we’ve all been through it and will sympathize and how it is special etc.The book talks about not only their changing bodies, but their changing emotions and changes in how they want to LOOK. But it points them back to how GOD feels about them and they are all unique and special. She writes a couple of other books that I may buy too. There are even questions they can get together and talk to other girls who have the book…It'd designed for the girl to read themselves but you could also read all or some of it together with your daughter. It might open up some great discussions. A MUST have for all young ladies.

My wife and I bought this book for our 11 year old daughter (she just turned 11 this past November). She is very shy when it comes to talking about adolescence and all of the changes that come with it. She loves to read though, so we thought this would be a way to start the conversations with her. Before we gave it to her, we read it and were both very pleased with the topics of the book as well as the style of writing. Here are the things we are most pleased with: 1.) It presents a wide range of topics, not just puberty and sex. It deals with healthy relationships, hygiene, being one's self, etc. 2.) It is Biblically based. Scripture is used throughout and the whole premise is that girls are unique, special creations of God. 3.) When it does talk about sex, it talks about it strictly in the context of marriage. It doesn't give any gray area or situations where sex outside of marriage is appropriate. It puts sex strictly in the bounds of marriage. As a side note, my wife and I are not naive in that she won't have sex outside of marriage, but we believe that is the foundation of the thought process behind sex. And really, it doesn't talk about sex that much. 4.) It devotes a no holds barred chapter on female adolescent puberty. This is really needed for her age to understand what is happening and what will eventually happen. As I commented above, she is very shy about these topics, and for obvious reasons, we want her to be prepared. We already know this book is having an effect, because it has been a conversation starter, in the sense that *she* is starting the conversations with us about the various topics. And when she starts them, we pretty much drop everything to listen to her and have a conversation with her. I really can't articulate enough how well this book was written and how beneficial it has been for us so far. I hope I have done it a small amount of justice!

I have never been so disappointed with a book. I guess I didn't understand what this was all about and it wasn't what I expected. Very long book, probably geared more to girls who are really into fashion, keeping up with the other kids, and what's "in" at the moment. It was strange that the only God parts were in the sections called "Got God?" I guess it just was not what I was looking for. I didn't show my daughter because it's so far removed from her life and personality she wouldn't have gotten what it was all about at all. Glad it was only $3.

A wonderfully styled book informing young girls (10-ish) about puberty. It's a conversational style, fun to read, like you're sitting right next to a close confidant who tells you like it is (girl-talk). The great part is this book doesn't go too far (sealing the deal, if you know what I mean!). I've found many Christian puberty books just go too far all in one book. I believe in teaching these things in stages and this book supports a slower approach. It has just the right amount of detail to help start conversations. I let my daughter read it on her own and then we discussed it and it worked wonderfully. I did extensive research on the perfect book and I think this one fits the bill. I highly recommend this book before puberty. The message throughout is "yes, you're normal" and "you're special to God". Very affirming.

I haven't been able to go through this whole book, but it is MUCH THICKER than I was expecting. Could be credited to its thoroughness on the topic, but my 4th grader will never be able to read this entire book and comprehend everything. I'd recommend for kids a little order, or with a higher reading level. I'll have to be much more hands on with this (which I planned on anyway) I also ordered the American Girl body book, and that seems much more young reader friendly.

I have my 12 year old girl books in the past and this one seems to be a favorite by far. She has read half the book and she just received it today. She expressed it was nice to read the subject matter from a Christian perspective. It isn't vulgar and aligns perfectly with Christian beliefs. It also gives you areas to write things in the book. This book I feel is best enjoyed by 11-14 year old girls.

My 9 yr old LOVES this book. I wasnt sure how to speak to her about hitting certain stages and this really made it comfortable as to its her who comes to me with the questions (simple questions cause everything is well explained in the book)

Got this for my daughter and it opened up dialogue about what she has been going through. She is very private about her body and the changes and this helped her to open up and ask questions. It also presented the material in line with our faith. We were both pleased

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#1,673 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Several aspects are totally predictable, unlikely or outright improbable. The villainess of the story is unnecessarily over-the-top, but it's a fun sort of cinderella-secretary story, most of the characters are well written, and I found it entertaining despite its flaws.Clean romance level: sweet kisses

A really delightful book. A fun, clean read! There were a few grammar mistakes but they can be overlooked.I look forward to reading more from this author.

This is a delight. The plot is unusual and the story is a lot of fun, and you can't help but love Mandy. Looking forward to more in this series.

Laughing throughout the book. Definitely worth reading. Clean, fun, and witty romance. Loved the characters.

I love this story. It has romance and humor and misunderstandings that are quite entertaining. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
