I was delighted, heartbroken and dumbstruck over the contents of these pages! I was thrilled with Mr. Dell'Olio when he made the leap to leave the comfort of San Francisco, then terrified for him as he was trapped in that first horrible storm. I was crestfallen at what appeared to be the loss of his dream, then elated at the start of the rescue attempt of the Sogno. I felt I was on that rocking boat with him as his partner wiped the blood from his eyes in the dinghy, in mortal fear he’d not be able to secure the engine or get Mario on board. Most importantly, I was inspired by this tale of overcoming overwhelming odds and triumphing in the face of adversity. Coming About: Life in the Balance is written in the tradition of Jon Krakauer's books Into the Wild or Into Thin Air, and if you like those or Adrift by Steven Callahan, you'll love this book. Buy two because you're going to want to give the other copy to that friend with a boat!!

I heard the story first-hand from Mario and Jim when my husband and I went sailing with them one afternoon. We both were riveted and exclaimed that their story would make a wonderful book! And, it IS a wonderful book!The book is very well written and captures and holds your attention from the first page. I recommend this book to anyone. It is completely appropriate for all age groups and readers.

I picked up this book after reading another review, and planned to read it over vacation. While waiting for a friend to arrive I began the first chapter. Three hours later, I had tears in my eyes as I read the last page, wishing for just one more piece of the author's life puzzle. Every chapter brought back memories of my own life's journey, it's ups and downs and twists and dives, and then would hit that emotional, sensitive part of my being that very few authors can touch. Bravo to Mario Dell'olio, please bring us on more of your life's adventures!

I read this compelling book in one sitting...Couldn't put it down. The author chronicles his personal and professional journey punctuated by compelling images of his search for an idealized life in a Caribbean "paradise". He embarks upon a voyage with his longtime partner and encounters multiple, life threatening challenges. This remarkable partnership, their resilience and continued devotion in the face of adversity is nothing short of inspirational. Their imagined paradise is not all that they hoped for, but it is clear that their ideal life is located not on an island, but within the loving safety of their relationship.

At times, it made me feel so nervous that I had to put it down for a few minutes 😊. An amazing story told so well, makes you feel like you’re there. Perseverance, strength and so much love. Highly recommended.

Although I knew that Mario and Jim survived to tell the tale, with each crisis I was left hanging in the balance! I had to put the book down and take a break. I limited the time that I read. I got so excited and so tense, and extremely happy each time that they survived a trial, that I was tired at the end of the episode.Extremely well written; engaging and exciting.So glad that you survived!

The human spirit and the will to survive are relentless, as demonstrated in this wonderful story, Coming About. The riveting details of this dramatic adventure, make it a pleasure to read. The fact that it is a true story, told from the author's perspective, makes it all the more fascinating!

His strong command of Biblical Greek and Hebrew, as well as the thoroughly researched footnotes make this a good buy (even for the beginning scholar). To be clear, Dr. Young is presenting a concise apologetic regarding the Biblical "Office of Prophet", rather than a detailed commentary on a specific book or portion of the Bible. Having defined the Prophetic Office (and trusting in the full integrity of the Scriptures), Dr. Young traces the stream of logic that finds its consummation in the life and continued rulership of Jesus Christ - God's Son. Therefore, I can heartily recommend this study to the minister or layman who is seeking a compact volume that does justice to this timeless subject.

I bought this book because I have long been a fan of New Yorker cartoons, though mainly those printed before 1970. This book gives some wonderful history on the forgotten women cartoonists of the New Yorker, especially Helen Hokinson, Mary Petty, and Barbara Shermund and is worth buying for that and the cartoons alone. However, a huge chunk of the book is taken up with the author's own story and the work of numerous newer (and in my opinion, lesser) female cartooning talents. I recommend the book to any fan of classic New Yorker cartoons, but warn that approximately the last third of the book is concerned with latter day talents and their (often somewhat bizarre and off the wall) work.

Liza Donnelly has written a great book, a book I have been waiting for. I'm embarrassed to say it's been out a while and I've just discovered it... but Funny Ladies is well researched, well-written, funny and enlightening. The history of women cartoonists at the New Yorker follows the history of women in the 20th century, and reading this book is and eye-opener on both levels. I was thrilled to learn more about cartoonists I'd heard of and discover ones I had not. And learning more about the founders of the New Yorker, Harold Ross and Jane Grant, plus the role cartoon editors there have played over time, is enlightening.A great book, great read, great find.Thanks to the cartoonist/author. There are precious few of us, and I'm so happy you preserved this portion of our history.

If you are a lady cartoonist (I am) or are simply curious about what makes this bunch tick, this is the book for you. Donnelly, a cartoonist herself, shows splendid insight into the women who chose to go this often bumpy route on The New Yorker Magazine as well as a wonderful historical perspective of lady cartoonists' evolution as the century progressed. A great book! A fascinating read.

Love the book but the KINDLE edition is full of flaws: spelling errors, faulty paragraph alignment and - worst of all - no links to the footnotes whose numbering is also off. I would have loved to follow up on some of her sources but the notes are simply not there. This is my first bad experience with a KINDLE book, though...

Purchased one book for myself and one as a gift for a humor writer friend of mine. I couldn't put it down. I found the cartoons entertaining and enlightening. I think the book shines when you focus in on the incredible details regarding other female New Yorker cartoonists. This book is very well researched and provides a wealth of interesting and valuable information. For anyone studying humor, satire, or cartoon development, this is an incredible resource for you to reference. For anyone who likes to laugh and learn something new, this is a fantastic addition to your home library.

This is not a cartoon collection, it's a history - but it does include cartoons by every one of the cartoonists mentioned. It slightly before the founding of The New Yorker, with how the magazine came to be, and how Ross's independent wife (her name was Jane Grant, and she didn't change it when she got married) was an influence on what he expected the readership of the magazine to be, and who he would accept as writers and illustrators.Some of the highlights: learning more about Helen Hokinson, much of whose stuff is still funny; the sad fate of Mary Petty. There was a little too much about Donnelly herself in there, but I guess I can understand the impulse. This really did bring out some of the developments in the glass ceiling for particular kinds of women artists.When one thinks about WW2, and women filling jobs that used to be men's, one thinks of Rosie the Riveter - until I read this book, it had not occurred to me that women also filled the men's jobs as cartoonists at The New Yorker! The section on the war era includes some of the funniest cartoons.Of course Roz Chast is included in here - quite possibly my favorite contemporary cartoonist. I greatly enjoyed the details about how she got into cartooning, and seeing how changes in her own stages of life have made it into her cartoons.I think the book as a whole is the same sort of mix as the magazine - interesting articles, punctuated by cartoons. So if you like the magazine, you should enjoy the book!
