I'm on a kick about the Gilded Age, the great families and their heritage and accomplishments. The families in this book make the Vanderbilts look like whiny losers. Instead of dividing their fortunes they increase them. Instead of spending money on ridiculous marble houses, the great Jewish families of NY create scholarships and charities and give more than generously. You will enjoy this book if you are curious as to how the Gilded Age was financed. Extremely intetesting and well-written.

One of my all time favorite books....If you are into Jewish family history and its origins here in theUnited States you might want to pick up a copy of this book. Concentrating initially with the 1stGerman Jewish immigration of the 1840's it develops the stories of the great New York Jewishfamilies and their rise to prominence and power. I first read this book over 25 years ago and itcaptivated me to the point I couldn't put it down until I had finished reading it.

Excellent account of the rise of German Jews to communal and economic leadership not only within the Jewish community but in the United States. I liked it so much that I purchased Birmingham's books on the Jews who came first tom from Spain and Portugal, usually by way of the Netherlands, and the largest group who, came from Eastern Europe, starting in the 1880s.

It took me a good deal more time to get through this book. It was more like a Jewish history lesson than a story. I did enjoy certain parts and, indeed, did learn quite a bit I had not known. That there were do many characters, made it bit more difficult to remember who was who.

Early in the book, I was afraid there would be too much detail of a kind I don't much care for (clothes, manners, statements of stuffy dowagers about commoners, that sort of thing). However, I think this author achieved a fine balance between important details of business and telling details of pleasure, family life, morals, and so on. The financial detail, and the business history as these families moved through various deals and pursuits, turned out very fine. One can see how, with good reason, first British and then American political figures came to rely critically on these German Jewish families to accomplish important financial tasks.Next stop, and a natural transition from this: "The Warburgs" by Ron Chernow, and "The New Crowd" by J. Ehrlich and B. Rehfeld..

It's interesting to learn how these mostly German Jewish immigrants worked so hard and made such sacrifices and such fortuitous decisions, that they became among the richest families in the US. They were not all geniuses, not all successful as merchants or bankers, but they stuck together and carried each other to eminence in finance, philanthropy and the arts.

Intriguing read. Well written but you need a score card to keep all the characters straight. The author fully explains the effect Jewish families had on the financial history of wall street and evolving businesses in early America. These individuals often came to the United States with little money and even less support. They overcame the discrimination that still exist today for many of these families. Granted the America success stories often occur at the expense of the workers but that's the America capitalism that built this grrat nation.

I enjoyed this history very much. Just ran a bit LONG! :) I like stories of early 20th century. Thanks
