I loved this book! The illustrations are really wonderful and started some interesting conversations with the kids I have read it to. I also like that she had to learn some valuable lessons in order to win at Wimbledon - like how to be a good sport, control her anger, and learn the rules of the game. The book also does a great job of talking about her past and how she overcame some hyperactivity and getting into trouble to do some excellent things. Lastly, I loved how the book talked about the importance of being grateful to those who help you along the way. Definitely recommend:-)

It's always good for kids to read about flawed heroes. Nobody really, deep down, wants to read about some guy whose only "flaw" is that they didn't brush their teeth before breakfast.Althea Gibson, as the title should make clear, has bigger flaws. As a kid, she was a petty thief. She didn't attend class. She stayed out late. And when she was given an opportunity and people fell all over themselves to help her, all she could do is say she didn't come to work on her *manners*, just her *sports*.She is fun to read about, that's for sure. And the triumph of being the first black person to win a Grand Slam (along with her partner, the first Jewish person to do the same) is sweeter for all that we learn that working on her self control helped with that. There's a nice afterword in the end with more information, including names of her own autobiographies. The one thing about this book I'm not to sure of is the artwork. Throughout the book, Althea is drawn with a wave of rainbow colors around her and following her. It does convey movement and all... but it also looks a little strange. I'm not sure what I think about it yet.

Great story, great pictures!

Great story

Great story!

I had expected more text in this book, so slightly disappointed.

Nothing But Trouble, The Story of Althea Gibson (by Sue Stauffacher; illustrated by Greg Couch) [...] is a remarkable short journey of an unruly, precocious, athlete Althea Gibson. She could play any sport and was good at it, everywhere she went; everyone would say `Althea Gibson, you're nothing but trouble!' There was one person, musician Buddy Walker, who saw only possibilities in Althea. Equipped with her behavior, energy, a tennis racket and tennis training........the rest is history. She never forgot Buddy Walker for helping the wildest tomboy in Harlem see the possibilities. "Tonight in the conclusion of a long and satisfying journey. It all started on one of New York's play streets when Buddy Walker, a play street supervisor, said, Althea, `I believe you can become a good lawn tennis player.' With those words, he handed me my first tennis racket. Tonight I thank Buddy Walker for a most satisfying victory" says Althea. This is an excellent way for kids to begin reading, discover an engaging piece of history and make a new discovery about themselves. Before There Was Mozart: The Story of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George

I'm not ashamed to say it. Say the name "Althea Gibson" to me a month ago and you'd have met a blank stare. Say it to me now, however, and you may suffer the indignity of finding me thrusting Sue Stauffacher's newest picture book, "Nothing but Trouble: The Story of Althea Gibson," into your arms while screaming into your ears its high points. This might be so bad either if the book only had a high-point here or there, but the fact of the matter is that "Althea Gibson" is ALL high points. It's a rip-roaring, snorting, fast and frenzied, well-researched, reiterated, illustrated, formulated bit of picture book biography magnificence. With the author of the "Donuthead" books on the one hand and soon-to-be-recognized-for-his-magnificence artist Greg Couch filling in the necessary art, "Althea Gibson" has everything you could possibly want going for it. It's fun. It's funny. It's smart and interesting, and has a flawed heroine you can't help but want to know more about. If your young child is looking for a biography of a woman and you don't know where to turn, I can't think of a better book available to you. There's something about Althea.Ask anyone. Ask her mama her daddy her teacher or the cop down the street that busted her for petty theft. They'll all tell you the same: That Althea Gibson is nothing but trouble. More comfortable tearing up the playground in the 1930s than sitting at a desk in school, Althea has a reputation for recklessness. None of that is enough to scare off play leader Buddy Walker, however. When he sees Althea play sports, he can only see raw talent and untapped potential. With his guidance and the help of the Sugar Hill's ritzy tennis court "The Cosmopolitan", Althea is given the chance to improve her style. Problem is, she has a hard time with being polite, following the rules, and not punching out her fellow players' lights. It takes time and patience and self-control to make Althea the best she can possibly be, but by 1957 she becomes the first African-American to win at Wimbledon. And though she could hog all the credit for herself, Ms. Gibson gives full credit to that amazing Buddy Walker who had the smarts to become her mentor. It's always more interesting to read about a flawed hero. Perfect people do not a fascinating story make. Maybe that's why the trend in children's biographies lately has been to tell the tale of those men and women who weren't made of solid gold from birth onwards. Between Kathleen Krull's, "Isaac Newton", Laura Amy Schlitz's, The Hero Schliemann: The Dreamer Who Dug For Troy and now Stauffacher's, "Nothing but Trouble," biographies for kids are getting better and better with every coming year. The nice thing about Althea is that for all her pouts and ill-manners, she's shown here to be someone who could conquer the world if she just applied a little self-control. As Buddy tells her at one point, "You've got to decide, Althea. Are you going to play your game, or are you going to let the game play you? When I go to the jazz club, I play like a tiger, but I wear a tuxedo." Stauffacher draws much of her dialogue out of Althea's biographies I Always Wanted to Be Somebody and So Much to Live For. Even without such lines, however, the author knows how to put a good story together. This plot is carefully crafted. From the timeline in the back (written on tennis balls, no less) to the great opening line, ("Althea Gibson was the tallest, wildest tomboy in the history of Harlem") to the thin slices of her life, Stauffacher does a stand up job. As Althea's biographer she prefers to concentrate on the role of Buddy Walker, even mentioning in her Author's Note that "Though this is Althea's story it is also Buddy Walker's story." The result is that this tale comes off as a tribute to mentors everywhere. To those people that see potential in certain kids and do what they can to bring such potential to light. And that is the nature of an entirely different kind of hero.Flying just below the radar is illustrator Greg Couch. Ms. Stauffacher may have the wherewithal, wit, and smarts to think to bring Althea's life to the page, but it is Mr. Couch's illustrations that truly deserve attention here. Couch has taken a story that could have been accompanied by staid, simple drawings and instead imbued them with a kind of electricity. Althea doesn't just leap off the page here. She crackles and snaps with an energy you don't usually encounter on your average picture book bio. Couch has chosen to clothe Althea in a hyperactive rainbow that zigs and zags with the girl's every movement and leap. Parents and teachers presenting this book to kids can ask them what they think this rainbow really means. And hopefully they'll notice that when Buddy plays the saxophone (as he did in his own jazz band) the same rainbow colors come out of the instrument. Plus the fact that these rainbows are the sole spot of color against a sepia-tinged background of old photos and scenes from the 30s, 40s and 50s is a nice touch as well. And when, at last, you see Althea win her Wimbledon, she is surrounded at her acceptance speech by a rainbow that has aged and changed from pure primary colors to subtler hues. I also appreciate that there is nothing anachronistic going on in this book. Every picture feels like it has stepped out of history.A co-worker of mine felt somewhat disappointed that the book ends as suddenly as it does. One minute Althea is learning the benefits of playing by the rules (while maintaining her fire) and the next she's won Wimbledon and the story's over. I think this is less a flaw of this specific book than of the picture book biography format in general. You can't linger on a year here or there, however much you might want to. And honestly, this is a book worth discovering. Stauffacher and Couch have found something to say about Althea that hasn't yet been said in the realm of children's literature and their passion in bringing Althea's passion to life is worth taking note of. So stand back now. I'm going to say something and I'm going to say it loud. This book not only pairs well with Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman by Kathleen Krull, it may have supplanted it in my brain as my new favorite picture book sports biography. A must read pick.

I've read every book so far, and am starting getting concerned. Yes it is pretty well written and the translation is getting better. However the main character is getting stupidly lucky and is way to over powered. There is only so much deus ex machina that I can take before I get fed up with a series. Yes I know thats the whole premise but the main character isn't any real hardship in anything he has done.Lets take out a 28 year old "genius" in real life without suffering any major conquences? Sure why not. Next just put him against 100 soldiers with guns and let him do some stupid "inner force" thing to kill them all with a snap of a finger like Thanos.A GOD or Tier 4 Mythical monser? Why were you even worried!? You have 5 secons invinciablilty and can teleport. Just go spit in there face and teleport away while taking all there stuff. There is absolutly nothing they coulda done to you.Go crown yourself emperor of the world with some other deus ex machina powers/items given a to you already without any real effort.Yes I will continue the series, but am really getting annoyed at this point.

Howdy, I stumbled across this book series on Amazon. Enjoyed the 1st book SO much. I read them all. The One Thing That makes this story Special? The Hero Exists in Both The REAL WORLD - with real Challenges. And the GAME WORLD.Where he has Advantages Because he is Reincarnated. BUT one man against 100's of Corporations INVESTING B*illions in a Game - THAT is a Challenge. PLUS what he Does CHANGES and SPEEDS up the Pace of Change. BELIEVABLE on Both Levels - Real And Game. ENJOYABLE because You Cannot Figure Out What is Gonna Happen Next. AND many of The Relationships, Rivalry's, Enemies The Hero Meets - have Qualities I recognize from Actual people. This author is world building based on his OWN Experiences I believe. Looking forward to book #11. Thanks, Glenn

I have rated previous books in this series as 3 star due to the poor translation from Chinese to English. There are still a number of things that stand out glaringly as feeling foreign or "off" and the reader still needs to fill in missing words and substitute more appropriate words and phrasing to help the dialogue make sense. At the same time I must admit that I am thoroughly hooked on the series and the translation quality has gradually been improving since the 4th book. The books are still too short covering too small a period of time for the price and he is still too wordy. That said, if you can get past the presentation, the story is captivating entertaining, unique and well worth the effort.

as far as I'm concerned, this is the best series in this genre. the translator gets 9/10 stars - great job. I'd give him 10 but there if there weren't a few phrases here and there that could be translated a little better. Still, the grammar is correct and you get the point. The translator does a great job and it's a pleasure to read. I just wish that the translations were coming out faster!! :)

This book series is probably my favorite ever(I'm an English professor at Harvard) so that alone is a big feat. The tenth book definetly lived up to the rest and may even be better, although it took 20 extra days than normal( normal is about one month) I definitely recommend this book to people of all ages and will read and buy the books in the future.

Another great addition to this series. It almost seemed too short cause I read it so quickly. This story seems to have plenty left to enjoy, can't wait. Black flame is always 5 steps ahead of every one, and if not he has a contingency plan waiting. One complaint though not major. Where was Blackie?I always enjoyed his humour.

Really awesome series. I’m ready for the next so I can devour it as well. I Highly recommend this series

Best book in the series. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Definitely recommend this series. Fast paced page turner with interesting characters that you can instantly root for.

We bought this book on a friend's recommendation. I found the style to be somewhat outdated. I read through it with my 8 year old daughter who has been very interested in babies since our newest son was born last year. This book teaches from a Christian perspective how the growth and development of a baby in utero shows the hand of God and defies evolution. It also teaches about the value of all human life from conception, including babies with defects and disorders. The book covers abortion from a pro-life perspective and in a way that will not traumatize your young child. Sex is introduced at the end of the book and does not go into any more detail than saying that the man and woman "become one" and that this "oneness" is reserved for marriage. It's a very gentle approach for children just beginning to question. It will also arm parents with good answers for tough questions about evolution versus creation. I highly recommend the book, although your kids may not be interested in the whole thing. We took it in parts and it was a great way to break the ice so they could ask questions and discuss with us.

What a great way to present the miracle of birth to children. I read this to my 9 year old son at night in order to "test the waters" with sex education. I felt this book gave just enough information without being too detailed or graphic. He was able to engage without being uncomfortable and embarrassed. He's still not ready to know more, so I was glad that I used this book as an introduction. I wish there were more books like this with a slow and gradual pace for tender children.

This book is very thorough and my three young children really enjoy listening to it.

This book was recommended to me by my niece who home schools. We are raising our 3 granddaughters and the 8 year old has had questions I just wasn't sure how to answer. What a God-send this book has been!

Wonderful tool. My eleven-year-old took well to it. I appreciated the careful discussion of evolution/creation.

Simply put: if you have Christian values, you'll like it. If you don't, you won't. We found it very helpful for our children.

Hi- I am a Mom of three children and I picked up this book at a baby consignment store because I thought it covered a good subject---babies. I was trying to figure out how to explain to my girls (when my son was in my tummy) what a baby looks like and how one is formed. Hence, this book came in and explained a lot of things! I gave it four stars because there was a lot of talk, especially questions that seemed too advanced for younger children to understand. My girls were simply happy to look at the pictures. I also have "A child is born" by Lennart Nilsson which I thought is a great supplement to this book.As for the other reviewer putting down "religious views" of this book. This reviewer is wrong. We as Christians embrace murderers, thieves, and other sinners because we love them as humans and are aware sin is just ruling their lives and most of them don't know any better or truly understand the Gospel of Christ. The religious extremists (who brag they are Christians) that are mean and pick on abortionists, doctors, thieves, etc. and others are NOT saved themselves! How can you show the love of Christ if you act ill mannered towards others? Our goals as Christians is to show love towards others so others may learn about the love of Christ.Anyway, enjoy this book with your children! I haven't found any other like this on the market. Just be careful because it is very wordy for young children but you can simplify it for them. It is fine for 10-13 year olds as is. God Bless! Julie Ann

This book covers it all and in a godly way. It covers not just getting pregnant but birth and why some children are special needs children. It goes so far as to cover abortion and Gods thoughts on it. This book is wonderfully written in every sense of the way possible. The pictures are in abundance and very good to go with what is being spoken about.

This book contains a wealth of information from many quotes from the Baha'i Faith about living, the meaning of death and the preparation of our souls for the afterlife. I have read it innumerable times and it has become my morning companion along with some other meaningful books before I meditate. I have purchased 3 copies for myself because of all my underlining and have purchased it for close friends who were experiencing the death of a loved one. One of the most inspirational books I've read. Highly recommend.

I was given two copies of this book, one well-worn, when my husband died 17 years ago. I passed the newer copy on to my son. We found it to be very comforting, and I still have the book on my shelf. When my brother-in-law passed away recently I ordered a copy for my sister. Unfortunately she hasn't received it yet, but when she does, I hope she finds it as comforting as I did.

Thank you God for all the new and amazing knowledge that you have given me in this book. The information provides much food for meditation and creating future life goals to prepare for the next leg of my eternal journey toward my Creator. So much knowledge logically presented and understood about the purpose of this life and the joy of the next. Very positive and affirming of what is in my mind and soul as I have diligently investigate TRUTH. A must read for every thinking seeker. I have purchased several copies as gifts for friends and family from Amazon for which they expressed sincere gratitude.
