This is a very good book, so it's a shame they did such a poor job with the electronic formatting. It is full of typographical errors. Some are just amusing, such as the page on which the number "1" is substituted for the personal pronoun "I." Others are annoying - the sloppiness or poor kerning that turns too many "RN" letter combinations into the letter, "M." And I have yet to figure out what "malting" is supposed to be. It is an adjective that occurs several times, but I think it is supposed to be something else.So maybe you should get a hard copy of this book. It is a very worthwhile read. Dorothy Day was an American icon, a home-grown saint, who was so impressed by how well people pulled together in community after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that it formed a basis for how she thought life should be lived. She's an inspiration and this book should be better known.

I love Dorothy Day! I have read her diary & thought this would be about the same, but it's much more! The book could be reviewed in many ways. One could consider history of the times with dates, novels read, private thoughts, life in general or in particular, relationship to the Church, development of self, religious & spiritual development, her writing, radical, feminine, or maternal movements, love: both physical & other, her conversion to Catholicism, her leanings toward justice, unions or her development to her place in caring for others through the housing, meal, farming set-ups she became famous for. The book is dense but very interesting; I marvel at her memory! I was wondering about the title & finally came to it. Amazing insights she had, including that one. She was so aware of her thoughts, life, spirituality with its duality, love, work & especially always being pulled in two different directions. This is a beautiful, deep, readable book. Dorothy Day is highly intelligent, educated, talented, adjusted in any circumstance. Her emotions were strong: a reader can feel her pain & agony, love, joy! The history of the times is valuable for anyone to get a feel for her experiences & learn. Her spiritual journey is inspiring. Her maternal instincts were deep. I could go on about this strong, amazing, humble, holy woman. But it would take far too many pages & I would not do her or the book justice. So, my advice is: Read this great book! You will not be disappointed no matter which facet you're interested in.

This is her autobiography -- she is an amazing soul, beautiful in outlook, couragous in deed -- alwayspushing the "limits" to work for the betterment of the humansituation. What a neat lady! The other amazing thing I found is that her life takes usthrough a time in the history of the US when Worker movements werejust being started. We see some days of WWI, the Depression, WWII,and beyond. She combined her passion to help the 99% and thecompletely down & out, with compassion and lodging and food --real works of mercy. The many different personalities she met duringher life come to life in only a few words -- she's a gifted writer, whichmakes the book read quickly. This is her story, the beginnings of theCatholic Worker movement, and a time in history that has a lot in commonwith our own.

This autobiography is simply told. Dorothy's radical love of the poor and her complete acceptance of Christ's message is inspiring. Saints are not perfect but strive to be. She helped so many of the poor with shelter and a chance to put their life on track. The title sums up her journey through life. She suffered losses and the" long loneliness". She had great faith which enabled her to love her neighbor by living among the poorest and providing all she had for their benefit...

I find it hard to read biographies. This book was not easy for me to read but it was worth reading though. There are passages that are incredibly moving. In particular, I was moved by how Dorothy Day would describe Peter Maurin.I deeply respect and admire Dorothy Day. It is beautiful how God worked in her life.

Dorthy Day was an important person in the social justice movement in the 20th century. Unfortunately her name is not well known today. This autobiography is a great introduction to her personal life and work.

As an English major in undergrad, a current MSW candidate, and a Protestant Christian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Day's selflessness, compassion, and intelligence are inspirational. This book was one of three options for a social work course assignment, and I am so glad I chose it. That being said, I think I would have better understood more of the earlier portions of book if I had a better grasp on the politics of the time period and of the Communist figures with whom she was involved.

Made me think hard about how to live my life. The book showed me that Christian life is defined by our relation to the brothers and sisters we are given by God. I also loved the wonderful prose of a great journalist. She is an inspiring saint!

This isn't just a love story. It's a unique drama, fraught in complex history and layered in self-discovery. It was intriguing to watch the love between Fiona and Danny unfold, but what really kept me enthralled was the growth of the individual characters: Fiona's rediscovery and exploration of her relationships with her parents, and Danny's struggle, his culture at odds with his dreams. This book helped me understand the gravity and complexity of The Troubles and the history and culture at play without bludgeoning me over the head with a history lesson. Instead, it gave me the context to make the underlying story between Fiona and Danny that much more interesting. (And, it made me want to learn more about The Troubles afterwards.)The last 40 pages kept me on the edge of my seat. Really enjoyed this book.

This book really takes you on a journey! So wonderfully emotional and thrilling.

I have had a string of lovely successes with contemporaries lately. I wonder, sometimes, about the phases we go through, both in reading and in life in general and whether or not (or where) they align. I'm not always able to see the patterns amid the daily vicissitudes, but I wonder about them often. Several months ago, I saw the cover for Sarah J. Carlson's debut novel All the Walls of Belfast and thought I might have died and gone direct to heaven. The title alone is my favorite of the year, hands down. I don't even care if those are fighting words. It is the best title of the year, so there. And, happily, it has a cover to match that beauty, all orange and green and hints of the walls that make up its title. I could only hope that the content matched. Somehow I knew it had to.Fiona grew up in America. From the time she was two years old and her mother took her and fled Northern Ireland for the unknown wilds of Wisconsin, she has believed that her father was dead. And now, on the cusp of graduating from high school and applying to colleges, Fiona discovers that her mother lied to her all those years and that her father and stepbrothers are, in fact, alive and well. More than that, her father very much wants to meet her. Which is how she finds herself alone on a plane to Belfast to meet an entire family and history of which she knows nothing. Danny has lived in Belfast his entire life and is quietly (and desperately) counting down the days until he can leave. Growing up in the Shankill, Danny has an abusive and alcoholic father, indifferent brothers, and a mother who died in a bombing when he was a boy. He's spent his life trying to lay low and do well in school so that he can join the British army as a nurse, escape the violence of his childhood, and do some good in a hopefully distant part of the world. What neither of them realize is that one chance meeting will alter the course of both of their lives. If they manage to survive the repercussions. All the Walls of Belfast is being billed as part West Side Story, and the similarities are undeniably present. But it is also very much its own creature in all the best ways. This novel is both incredibly sober and achingly romantic, though neither tone overwhelms the piece as a whole. This balance Ms. Paulson achieves struck me as so skillfully wrought, as it meant that both Fiona and Danny felt their ages. They reflected their wildly different upbringings. We got to spend sufficient time with them each on their own, with their families, and together just the two of them. There were no sweeping escapes, no time away from time, no unrealistic moments for the sake of manufactured drama or faux romanticism. As I said, it is a tale with gravity to it, set as it is on separate sides of a peace wall, in both the Falls and the Shankill areas of Belfast, in the wake of The Troubles. And it highlighted for me, a clear outsider, how alive and present and breathing the legacy of that decades-long conflict truly is. It initially put me in mind of the lovely Eva Underground, as both books treat lingeringly problematic periods in European history in such thoughtful and resonant ways.***My Physics Club T-shirt was mostly dry. He draped the dripping hoodie over the radiator. I sat on his neatly made bed. Each mattress spring poked me. A British flag hung right next to me. At the foot of the bed was a shredded poster; one piece had a soldier with a medic armband."Will you take tea?" Danny asked."I don't drink tea." I just wanted some tape to fix his dream."Right, yous threw it all in the Boston Harbor."***This rare lighter moment is shadowed over by the ever-present barriers between them―Danny's fiercely loyalist upbringing and father and the extremely complicated history surrounding Fiona's republican father and stepbrothers. There is nothing glossy about this tale. Rather, its extreme beauty is tucked away in every loving, yet unflinching detail, in the meticulous depictions of this war-torn city and its wounded people. It is such a deeply personal story, its empathy comprehensive. It quite took my breath away."Dad stopped a yard from me. His weary hazel eyes, spotted with green, looked me over.As much as I tried to picture Dad's sordid past―fingers nestled in blue-and-red wires making bombs; wearing the ski mask, sunglasses, and the beret with the Easter lily; shooting at British soldiers―I couldn't. Right after I was born, he'd held my whole body in his hand."All the Walls of Belfast is an instant entry on my Best Books of 2019 list.

A great read! All the Walls of Belfast is definitely a page turner! It takes you to Northern Ireland providing a glimpse of culture, landscape, historical events, the impact those events have on the lives of the two main characters and how the past forces them to make difficult choices. A coming of age story that we can all learn from as they work to put their differences aside. Fiona and Danny will be on readers minds long after they are through with the book.

This is a lovely story about imperfect characters with good hearts who make mistakes and have to learn to fix them/ forgive the imperfections in each other. It was daring and realistic and I enjoyed every second of it.I adored the characters in this book. Danny and Fiona were wonderful leads. Their voices were distinct and I found it very easy to fall into both of their heads. I think my favorite thing about them (especially Danny, who grew up significantly less sheltered) was how realistic they seemed to me. They didn't always say or do the right or easy thing, and I never felt like they were making choices to serve the plot. Rather, they were shaping the events around them in unexpected ways.Even though I have never been to Belfast, it was clear to me that Carlson had done her research. The city came alive for me throughout these pages. Just like the characters, my favorite thing about it was how unafraid Carlson was to portray the grittiness and the cracks. Because, just like people, the beauty of the city is inexorably tied up in its flaws and complicated histories and prejudices. Also it's hopes and aspirations.Bottom line, this book is stuck in my head. It will absolutely transport you if you let it.

The struggles of four companies are discussed in detail including their history. The four companies are: The New York Times, the Washington Post, Buzz Feed and VICE. I do agree that all four of these are an endangered species now. In the blurb for this book, it is stated that 60% if the workforce in the newspaper industry has been cut since the year 2000. The author was fired from the New York Times in 2004 and had attained the position of Executive Editor at that time. The Ochs motto of 'the news that is fit to print' has changed drastically due to the digital age. Each and every one of the four companies mentioned felt the impact of the wave of the digital age. The New York Times missed an opportunity with Face Book to expand as did the Washington Post with Google. The cost of advertising for print ads increased and the paid circulation for the papers decreased. In 2015, the average age of the print reader was 60 at the NY Times. And, the readers of the newspapers wanted the content to be free...on line. One thing that caught my attention was the Federal Communications Commission statement in 2011. They concluded that the independent watchdog foundation that the Founding Fathers envisioned for journalism....was at risk at the local level. Think about that for a few minutes. And, that was in 2011.With the advent of Google and Face Book, the newspapers had a difficult time keeping up. Paraphrasing the author. after 9/11, Google kept tabs on 150 news sources.... with reporting power of 4500 sources all over the world. In 2015, they were able to amass 50,000 news sources in 70 different areas. Just an exponential growth of power. Now, this becomes more interesting when one thinks about the manner in which the internet is used today. Most people are searching for titles with a limited amount of info... looking for a snippet of news.Being a statistician while in the Navy, I applaud the author's use of numbers in her research. All of the pertinent claims have been well researched and placed into the text.Jeff Bezos purchased the Washington Post as many will remember. He has always been a visionary and he said 'What is dangerous is not to evolve'. Sums up the manner in which the rise of the digital news has sky rocketed....Most highly recommended.

Merchants of Truth tells the well-known story of the decline of print journalism in the digital age. (Ironically, as it turns out, certain parts are very well known. Abramson has already promised to excise plagiarism from the text. This makes the moral screed of the narrative not only grating but flagrantly hypocritical.) Journalists, for obvious reasons, tend to think and write a lot about this topic and Jill Abramson is no exception. In her mind the monopolistic papers of the late twentieth century were what the founders themselves intended as pillars of American democracy. Now they are a mix of true journalism and informative entertainment.Weaving accounts about the growth of the digital news companies Vice and Buzzfeed with what was going on at two of the nation’s major newspapers Abramson delivers many behind the scenes views and anecdotes but doesn’t really have anything new to contribute to the overarching narrative of traditonal media decline. Those who are, like Abramson, true believers in the creed that the monopolistic city papers in the pre-Internet era were “beacons of truth” and upheld journalistic standards far above those of today will lap up the descriptions of sordid doings at Facebook, Vice and Buzzfeed. But harkening back to the days when cabinet members were honored to eat in the executive lunchroom of The NY Times seems wistful at best and pernicious at worst. Does the new mass media really fail to provide citizens the information they need to vote and act responsibly in the public square? Aren’t problems like the lack of diverse points of view on people’s Facebook Newsfeed well known and resolvable? In short, is there any reason to read a 430 page elegy of the decline of the great age of newspapers? Personally, I don’t think so but lovers of traditional journalism may disagree. Abramson is a good storyteller but yet another postmortem on print journalism seems unnecessary. Some will love the exalted view Abramson evokes of the necessity and high moral calling of the profession. But those of us not in the media can skip this reveling about their heyday and whining about their increasingly profit driven business model. Only for true believers in the high church of journalism.

Author Ian Frisch has provided convincing evidence of multiple examples of plagiarism in Merchants of Truth: The Business of News and the Fight for Facts.

Abramson provides an insightful insider’s look at the near destruction of journalism during the last 15 years. The book is gripping, having been deeply thought-out and researched. This makes it all the more bitter that some shoddy cut-n-paste took place. Rather than simply putting quotes around some passages from articles that provide relevant facts to support her arguments, Abramson lifts paragraphs wholesale and leaves the reader dependent on finding the attribution themselves in the endnote references. This is unacceptable, and goes far to make the main point of the book: that untoward cost cutting in the service of obscene profits leads to unethical practices. I had the exact same experience working for a famous brand medical device company during the same period.

I have read about 10 books on van/rv living over the last two months. This one is by far the most well written and motivating. I hesitated about buying this book because it is written by a young man from the UK who lives in a van all around Europe, whereas I am a late-fifties woman planning on doing my van dwelling in the US. I found this book to be applicable no matter your age or location. So many of these self-published books are poorly written, but not this one. I felt that the author was sitting in my home speaking directly to me. I am definitely going to purchase his other book.

Mike's writing style makes it easy to imagine taking the next step toward any goal you have. I've read both his books even though my goal isn't to live in a van, ...but it does involve ditching the traditional way of living for something which suits me better. His practical philosophy and implementable tips and strategies lend themselves to other goals well.I hope my kids each read his book and follow his blog. They will understand me even better, and will be further encouraged to follow their own path.

Even though I am in the U.S. not the U.K. this book had several links to sites that would be helpful for van life in the states. It was an entertaining and helpful read. Any book that encourages people to go after their dreams and gives useful tips is a good read for me.

As a 66 year old female, I’ve had my van for about 8 months. A low roof 2017 ford transit extra long body. It took me a while to insulate and panel the inside and it doesn’t look all that great but it’s got me out of my rut. I have solar, a bed and a portapotty. What else could one want. I’ve already crossed the USA once with snow storms behind me all the way and can’t wait to do it again. Thanks for the extra encouragement

I enjoy reading about how people manage to free themselves from the drudgery of working at something they don’t enjoy.

Not how to set up your van, but some good stuff about living in it and traveling around the world. Matt is funny and has a lot of insight into why live in a van, how to quit your job and how to make money on the road (kind of sketchy details, but you have to follow your own path).

it's a nice read. there are no problems driving free? this book paints a beautiful picture of living the van live. what about the bad? I want a book to tell me both sides. not blow smoke up my butt.

Good read that covers a lot of basics along with more advanced topics. Well written and keeps interest up. A bit of travel stories sprinkled in gives good entertainment too!

The Pigeon Wants a Puppy, by Mo Willems

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 3—The incorrigible bird returns in his fourth full-length romp. This time, Pigeon voices another common childhood dream: he wants a puppy. And he wants it NOW. He even promises to take care of it: "I'll water it once a month." He argues his case so forcefully that a puppy appears, but it's more than he expects: "The teeth! The hair! That wet nose!...I mentioned the teeth, right?" So he sets his sights on a different pet. Kids will love this perfectly paced picture book, which offers both the expected (breaking the fourth wall, Pigeon's classic temper tantrum) and a new twist (Pigeon actually gets what he wants? Impossible!). Willems's hilariously expressive illustrations and engaging text are cinematic in their interplay. Maybe kids won't appreciate the genius behind it the way adults will, but that won't stop them from asking for this book again and again.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Pigeon, the stubborn preschool impersonator last met in Don’t Let Pigeon Stay up Late (2006), returns for another encounter with an unseen adult. This time, he’s angling for a puppy, and once again his approach perfectly mirrors a child’s, from calm reassurances (“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll take care of it!”) to sulking to a full-blown tantrum: “I WANT A PUPPY! RIGHT HERE! RIGHT NOW!” Amazingly, his dream comes true, but when a big, slobbery pooch appears in the frame, the terrified Pigeon discovers that, in fact, he may not be a “puppy-loving pigeon” after all. Maybe a walrus is more his speed. Willems skillfully executes the formula that made previous Pigeon titles so popular: minimal artwork that places all the attention on the cajoling little bird, whose words and body language will strike a chord of familiarity with every child. Once again, kids will reach the story’s end wondering what Pigeon will want next. Preschool. --Gillian Engberg

My kids (2 and 4) just adore Willems' books. The can identify his characters by sight ("did No Willems write this book?") and after borrowing many of the Gerald and Piggie and Pigeon books from the library over and over, we just started outright asking people to get them for the kids for birthdays/holidays.We've read this book so many times that my husband and I are sick to death of it, and that, my friends, is the definition of a great children's book. That demanding pigeon is back, pleading his case for puppy ownership and it is just as funny as you'd expect. If you don't own this, or any of the pigeon books, get them for your kids. Mo Willems' talent is such a gift to young children.

These pigeon books are absolutely amazing! The bird has become a part of our daily lives, constantly playing around with my daughter asking her to drive the bus and to stay up late. We bought the remaining books as well as the plush pigeon for our daughter for Christmas/her birthday [= expensive holidays] this year and we all love the series so much. This author is genius. Then today we received the activity book, and again complete satisfaction! It's so funny, and there's enough to keep us busy for hours and hours on end!

My daughter wanted the whole series and I said no. As she is 9yrs old and this is way to easy for her to read. I bought one just to please her. She was happy with the one book. Needless to say we will have it for later down the road for more kids or my niece or nephew.

Preschoolers will recognize themselves in Pigeon, a big-eyed blue bird that really, really, really wants a puppy. He's wanted it "forever! At least since last Tuesday."Pigeon speaks directly to the reader from page one. "Oh, hello. How are you? I'm fine, thanks for asking." He proceeds to tell you how much he wants a puppy, how he'll take care of it by watering it once a month. Pigeon gets emotional when he concludes that you don't want him to have a puppy. He throws a tantrum: "I WANT A PUPPY! RIGHT HERE! RIGHT NOW!"Mo Willems uses speech balloons to show that Pigeon is indeed speaking to the reader, and he changes the size of the type to show Pigeon's changing emotions. When the bird sulks, the type size is small, as if Pigeon is muttering to himself: "You just don't understand." And when the puppy arrives on the scene with a friendly "Woof?" Pigeon's terror shows with a bold, black scrawled "Aaaaaggghhh!"Of course Pigeon changes his mind about wanting a puppy, and decides what he really, really, really wants is... a walrus.Young kids will love reading along and answering back to Pigeon as he "talks" with them. This one joins Willems' other classics:Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too!andThe Pigeon Loves Things That Go!.

I purchased this for my 4.5 y.o. adopted nephew. His mom and dad started practicing Zen Buddhism in the last few years, and there is sort of a Zen message in this book about not always seeking the next "thing" to give us happiness. In the book, the pigeon wants a puppy and pleads and whines for it. Then he sees the puppy is huge compared to himself and decides he no longer wants it but instead wants a walrus. It's a good jumping off point to talk about how to live with your wants and how it's human nature to always want the next thing. My nephew loved the book and was thrilled to have it. He had read it at his school and was happy to have it in his home to re-read whenever he wanted.

I cannot say enough good things about this book or Mo Williams. The Pigeon series are HYSTERICAL. My 4 year old loves the books, and my husband and I love reading them too her. The writing keeps the adult entertained and the pictures keep the small ones entertained. I really hope he continues to write this series.

We came across this book at our public Library and my toddlers fell in love with it. After waiting in anticipation for it once I placed the order, my toddlers were so excited on its arrival. This book is very simple in its illustration and word choice, but it's this simplicity that captures your attention and the attention of the child. In addition, it really gets the reader involved with the story. It's a book every 2 to 7 year old should have in his or her library. My little ones read The Pigeon Wants a Puppy practically everyday. It's worth the read and it's worth the money. The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too!There Is a Bird On Your Head! (An Elephant and Piggie Book)Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!

My 8 year old loves this book. Her reading level is a little lower then other kids in her grade. She loves that she can read this book without stopping to sound out words. She reads it to her little brother, and even some of the younger neighborhood children. She uses voices and is so cute when she reads. I am so glad we added it to our collection. I know it will get a lot of use in our house.
