Visual artist and "aging, single, unrepentant hippie-environmentalist" Hinchman (A Trail Through Leaves) sets out with her loyal dog, Sisu, to explore, observe and record western Montana's Rocky Mountain Front. While hiking the fields, swamps, rivers, prairies, forests, creeks and game reserves, Hinchman's exacting eye for flora and fauna is always at work chronicling, often in minute detail, all aspects of what surrounds and fascinates her. The result is a love letter to nature: a travel journal/naturalist's notebook replete with hand-written notes; illustrations and diagrams of flowers, birds, deer, animal tracks, "soul-slaying" vistas, cowboys and area maps; and many charming portraits of Sisu. Hinchman paints stones, ice formations, grasses and leaves, tree bark, and animals in motion with a fluent, sensitive hand. Her relationship with other humans on the Front, however, is not as reverent: "I value the Front for its ecological integrity; they value it as a source of livelihood... to them, my values are perverse, elitist, heretical." She exhibits further disdain for hunters: "More often, the morning stillness is violated by volleys of gunshots, as though a gang of idiots were shooting randomly at a running herd... if these aren't the sounds of brutal ineptitude, someone please enlighten me." I love these types of memoirs.... a little bit story and a whole lot of art. Beautifully done with a charming "voice." The author is very attune to the challenges and rewards of being the interloper to a small, remote community in Montana. Her dog reminds me of my own and I loved reading about their adventures together. Hannah's art captures both the majestic and mundane and pings your heart. Satisfying and lovely.

Hannah does a lovely job of compiling her journals & artworks into a chronicle of life on the Front Range. I really enjoyed her "maps" of the days wanderings & the collections of small sketches that made up the observations of a day trip. I plan to use some of these ideas in my attempts at journaling.

Many of the selections have counterparts from other cultures. "The Deer and the Snail" is a "Tortoise and the Hare" variant, and children will recognize "The Prince's Bride" as "Beauty and the Beast" with a twist. Others are quite different, such as "Why Mosquitoes Buzz Around Our Ears," which is surprisingly unlike the well-known African tale. "The Battle of the Sea and Sky" is a particularly nice telling of the creation of the Philippine Islands. Each story is accompanied by de Leon's ink-and-watercolor illustrations. The artist has subtly paid tribute to the diversity of the islands by using a variety of styles in the costume, suggestive of the different regions. I bought this book for my cousin's daughter (who is half Filipino). The main reason I bought this gift was 1) I wanted to buy her a book and 2) I couldn't be sure if she already owned or would receive the same Dr. Seuss and Little Golden books everyone else tends to buy. This was a great choice, I didn't read through the book but I saw some stories I had heard before. Since she is sure to grow up hearing stories about Cinderella, etc. I hope she will also treasure these as part of her heritage as she grows up and when she is older.

I read one story to my son and was done. It was about an ugly giant that the characters ambushed and killed. What kind of children's book is this?

One of the most favored bedtime stories in our household. Good illustration that corresponds to the story. Eve catching colors and over all fun stories to read.

Great multicultural stories to share in my 4th grade classroom! Illustrations were nice too! We were able to compare these to stories from other cultures.

My two little girls love the book especially reading it to them and gives them something to connect with part of their heritage.
