#58,298 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have already purchased two books and awaiting for my books to arrive. I have been following the author and her daughter on their facebook page and seeing some of the lovely recipes from the book they are sharing, I decided to buy a Kindle version, when I heard it was available, because I just couldn’t wait one more day for the books to be mailed. Buying the Kindle version was a wise choice as I got to read this book and fall in love with the recipes, the stories, and the information this book holds. This is a well laid out book. There are LOTS of recipes and if you are a lover of southern cooking (or want to experience it) then you will not only love this book but possibly feel it is the only one you may need. If you are a lover of healthy foods or have food allergies then this is still a great book to purchase because the recipes also have alternatives to fixing them who need gluten free foods, ect. There are recipes for main meals, breads, entrées, deserts, salads and sauces to name a few. It is a door way to the famous southern foods and the opportunity to become southern even if you were born a Yankee. There are stories of family traditions, family ‘heirloom recipes’ and funny occurrences that happened around the recipes. The most important part of these stories are that the readers are reminded that food is not just something to satisfy a hunger but it is a tool to use to create quality family time, memories, a pride of cooking, an extension of love and hospitality that sometimes we lack in our world today. While reading I was impressed how knowledgeable the authors were of cooking by the tips and techniques they offer. I loved that certain oils were addressed, the temperature degrees they worked best at and the food that did best using each one. After reading this book I felt the ever important need to sit at the table and enjoy family and the conversation they offer. A rebirth of taking the time to cook instead of ordering out has occurred within me. It is also a book written by two authors , mother and daughter, that extend the invitation to adopt a southern style of cooking and life of raising your own vegetables or visiting the farmer markets to acquire them.I will be buying more copies of this book and giving as gifts because it is more than a great cookbook, it is a book that will make you laugh at the stories shared by not only the authors but their friends and family. It is a salute to the American lifestyle we knew as children but have forgotten because of the high tech world and hurried lifestyle. More importantly, this book gives you great recipes to share with your family so you can nurture loved ones and begin some traditions of your own.I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

This was a cute cookbook, I really enjoyed the stories before the recipes, they added a very personal and warm touch. They made me want to be a part of the family, as well as visit the south. Each recipe has alternative ingredients to sub out possible allergens, like gluten, vegan options, etc. It also has variations to change up the recipe a bit to make it more unique, as well as helpful tips on dealing with ingredients! Everything from how to get more juice from a lemon, to how long ingredients last and how to store them, and how to pick the best produce. My only qualms are that I'd love to have more pictures to go along with the recipes. For example, I've never even heard of a tea cake before, so I have no idea what they're supposed to look like!Of course, I'd also like it to be a bit longer, as I really adored it, but that just means I'll be looking out for a second book in the future :)

Other than the food allergy accommodations, which I don’t need, I didn’t find the recipes to be any better, different, or more interesting than the dozens of other Sou5ern cookbooks out there. As I started reading I found the family story that preceded each recipe to be mildly charming, but they quickly got old, seemed too long, and it became obvious that the authors were really stretching to find a story for each recipe. It pretty quickly just seemed like filler.I didn’t return it but am unlikely to give it much use and if I could have seen more in the preview would not have purchased it.

Perfect and I am a southern girl. Great recipoes and lots of ingredients are what the average person has on hand or easy access. Happy to have this book.

A must have in your cookbook collection

Bought as a present for my brother in law and he absolutely loves it!

Love it!!

Bought this for a Christmas present. The recipes look great though!

Not really into sci-fi/fantasy, but I got this on the recommendation of a friend. I had two long drives ahead of me and figured I'd listen to it in the car. It was tolerable for that, but basically, it was slow. Very slow. And usually when a book is this long, the characters are well developed enough to make you care about them. I didn't. So the very unsatisfying, make you buy the next book, ending didn't motivate me at all. I'll pass.

Rigg is special. He can see where living things have been, and how long ago. He sees their paths, even hundreds of years afterwards. This helps him track game, as he travels with his forester father to collect meat and hides for sale. It also gets Rigg into a lot of trouble.Orson Scott Card has created a world in which the human brain is able to transcend time and space. Humans like Rigg need not be limited by the unidirectional flow of time, and the chains of causality can be quite surprising as a result. The story is interesting throughout. Despite the elements of science fiction that shape Rigg's adventures, the meat and potatoes of Pathfinder are a story, characters. and a world that left me wishing I could be one of those characters, in that amazing world.

After reading Hidden Empire I wondered if one of the greats of sci-fi writing had lost his way. Well, I'm happy to say that Card is back with a wonderful book of problematic time travel paradoxes. Pathfinder tells the story of humanity reaching out to colonize new worlds. The story starts with the basic question, how do we get to another planet and what technology shall be used to travel through space? The wheels of imagination start spinning and before long we are 19 levels deep in forward and backward progress that seemingly all takes place at the same time. Sound confusing? Well, maybe a little bit but Card starts this adventurous tale with possibilities and probabilities a plenty. As with many of his books the star of the show is a young boy who is faced with making complicated decisions based on the "paths" of time gone bye....or is it time to come and are we moving forward or backward through time? Oh, and there is a computer who likes to think it's a know it all.Confused? Well the reader is just along for the ride and a wonderful ride it is. Despite being written for grade 7 and up, this 69 year old thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful novel and look forward to reading the sequels that are sure to come.

OK, I love Orson Scott Card, but science fiction is not really my genre. I read someone's review that said it took them a while to get into the book. True. I was reading, and enjoying, yet not knowing what in the world I was reading about. Confused doesn't begin to describe it. Yet I kept reading. Finally, almost halfway into the book I began to "sort of" get it, but not really, but the character development kept me going. I also loved the insertion of present-day expressions and wisecracks.I read until 2 a.m. just to finish it, and was still confused. Apparently I am not alone, because the Acknowledgment at the end did mention "if you are still confused...." and I wanted to raise my hand in the air (yes, at 2 a.m.) and say "I am, I am!"However, I'm hooked now and will continue with the series.

In this new book for teens from Orson Scott Card, we meet a boy named Rigg who has been raised in the forest by a man he calls Father. In addition to learning to track and hunt, Rigg has learned--apparently by the Socratic method--a lot of other things, including how to handle himself with people from differing social strata, depending on what he wants. Most of the information seems pretty useless to Rigg, but the time comes when he suddenly has to apply a great deal of it. After Father is fatally struck down by a tree in the forest (early in the book), he sends Rigg away, telling him to sell their stash of furs and go in search of his sister. Of course, Rigg didn't even know he had a sister till that moment. As he sets out, Rigg nearly falls from a dangerous river crossing above a waterfall, attempting to save a younger boy who walks in exactly the wrong place. Unfortunately, Rigg's rescue efforts are hampered by his gift for seeing the paths of the past as colored trails winding along the ground or even through the air. This time, his gift brings him into actual contact with someone from the past, who inadvertently interferes with Rigg. The boy's brother, Umbo, at first thinks Rigg has killed the boy deliberately, and Rigg has trouble convincing the villagers not to kill him in turn. He also loses the entire load of furs. But a woman who was a friend of his guardian gives him a secret stash of jewels and some coins, as well as the information he needs to seek his sister, then sends him on his way. Umbo follows him, and the two country boys set off for the city. It turns out Umbo has his own gifts relating to time and space, and he and Rigg begin to experiment with combining their abilities.Rigg's story is interspersed rather surprisingly with the tale of a spaceship carrying refugees from earth, almost all of them in suspended animation. The one human who remains awake works with sophisticated androids to make decisions about the mission. It shouldn't take long for you to realize that Rigg's abilities have something to do with the spaceship, which runs into trouble that causes it to split into different causalities and move backwards through time.At times Rigg seems much older than he is, and there are an awful lot of long conversations in this book about the implications of time travel. (In his afterword, Orson Scott Card even clarifies what happens with the spaceship and how it affects the narrative.) But it is through these conversations and related experiments that Rigg and Umbo discover ways of using their abilities to evade their enemies. This becomes necessary when Rigg reaches the city, only to find himself at the mercy of political machinations that seem likely to destroy him. Yet in the midst of all this time travel and politics, what ends up mattering most in Pathfinder is that Rigg has two loyal friends--Umbo as well as Loaf, an innkeeper and former soldier who escorts the boys to the city. The interplay between Rigg and Umbo is especially nice.Orson Scott Card is a practiced storyteller with a knack for fresh premises and plot twists, as anyone who has read and loved Ender's Game can attest. I suspect that as many of the author's adult fans as teens will want to read Pathfinder and will then look forward to the next book. Because even though this story comes to a satisfying stopping place, it also leaves us with the promise of further complications.
