Review

Praise for Living the Quaker Way“Anybody who has ever thought that the Quakers invented oatmeal will learn differently from Living the Quaker Way by Indiana pastor and highly readable author Philip Gulley. He describes the values of the Quaker way: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality. Gulley is published by the new Random House imprint Convergent, which aims at people in the growing ranks of the spiritually curious but religiously unaffiliated.”—Publishers Weekly Top 10 in Religion, Fall 2013“Ever since I ‘discovered’ Quakerism, I’ve wondered why Quakers are so quiet about their core values—simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality—in a world that so clearly needs them. So I was thrilled to find this book by Phil Gulley, a great Quaker writer, aimed at making those values more accessible. Gulley makes no effort to convince the reader to become a Quaker. He simply says, ‘If you’ve been looking for ways to live out these values, here’s what Quakers have learned over three and a half centuries of dedicated experimentation.’ His book is a treasure trove ofpractical wisdom about what it means to bear witness to our hope for a better world.” —Parker Palmer, author of Healing the Heart of Democracy, Let Your Life Speak, and The Courage to Teach“Living the Quaker Way is not only refreshing and inspiring, it is challenging in all the right ways. Even though I am not a Quaker, their core values challenge my real life as well as the life of the faith community that I pastor. Filled with honest stories, deep wisdom, and realistic practices, Living the Quaker Way will leave you not only longing to live differently but also with practical ways to do just that.”—Kathy Escobar, co-pastor of The Refuge, faith blogger, and author of Down We Go: Living Into the Wild Ways of Jesus“This is nothing less than the gospel itself. Quakers have always had the ability to simplify and get to the point, and here it is! I am most happy to add my very positive endorsement to this excellent, clear, and much-neededbook.”—Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New MexicoPraise for Phil Gulley“Philip Gulley separates wheat from chaff, experience from explanation, and purpose from function in this book. He calls the Jesus message into a new vision—one that has both power and integrity.” —John Shelby Spong, former bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and author of The Sins of Scripture“No one raises provocative questions about Christianity more kindly than Philip Gulley.”—Diana Butler Bass, author of Christianity After Religion and A People’s History of Christianity“In our ever changing world, Gulley’s book is much needed. An important book for any person of faith.”—Archbishop Desmond Tutu“The verve and clarity of Gulley’s writing underscore the welcome nature of his message to many thoughtful unchurched or alienated Christians.”—Library Journal

Living the Quaker Way: Timeless Wisdom for a Better Life Today by Philip Gulley is a discussion of the Quaker beliefs and pillars of simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality. What I can appreciate the most is simplicity in my own life and community as a more overarching issue. For me, simplicity is an ideal state of being. My reality is that with three kids, school, preschool activities, a lot of doctor's appointments, freelance writing assignments and just plain old life, it seems like an unreachable goal. However, a lot of it is stuff that I do to myself. We make life more complex than it needs to be. The Quakers have some interesting ideas on this.In current events, there's been so much disunity in our government, with some people fighting just to fight, or so it seems. It seems like the politicians only care about who donates the most money to their ongoing campaigns. The gerrymandering ensures that they'll get re-elected, even if they have a 10 percent or less approval rating, which is what Congress currently has. I think we could all glean some pearls of wisdom from this book. The book includes discussion questions as well as personal anecdotes. It's an easy read, it's not preachy, and it conveys a lot of material to think about.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I received no other compensation. The opinion here is my own.

The Way---I am much older than Phil Gulley, but am willing to readily admit that he surpasses me in the wisdom department. His two books “ If Grace is True” and “If God is Love” written some years ago with James Mulholland, were very helpful in my growth as a new, middle aged Christian, who had earlier rejected the Church as a den of hypocrites. In this book, I see the source of his wisdom – of course from God, but from God through the practices and beliefs of the Quaker Church. This book is a reminder that the true principles of right living are: Loving God (loving his created Natural Universe) and Loving Others (his created Creatures). This truth is independent of religion, but is especially emphasized by the Quaker Faith. I loved this book. It was another encouragement to continue on the same path, the Way, despite bumps and potholes, and all the hypocrites who appear along the way, as they did in Jesus’ day.

I love Philip Gulley's way of lightening a serious load. His naturally humorous personality permits him to be delightfully entertaining or deeply serious and thought provoking. I think I've read all of his books, beginning with the playful Front Porch tales and more recently his co-authored book on God's grace and this one on the Quaker way.Marriage moved me away from the Quaker community in which I was raised but I've always valued the emphasis Quakers place upon simplicity, integrity, community, service, non-resistance, contemplation, and peace within. These are the very qualities that Jesus teaches. There is much to challenge us today within these pages. Gulley does not condemn. He's brutally honest about his own temptations and shortcomings. And in the typically Quaker way, he is not proselytizing. He invites the reader into a way of living that seeks to see "that of God in every human-being" and into being a person of peace, love, forgiveness and grace. This would be a fine and challenging book for small group discussion.

This is the best book that I, a lifelong Friend, have read on Friends faith and practice, particularly practice. Gulley takes up five prime Quaker values---simplicity, community, peace, integrity, and equality. Each receives a thorough, thoughtful, modest, and clear discussion, with a generosity of spirit I found quite remarkable. He is a progressive Friend; he has more than entered the current century. But his values are as strong and solid as those of the founding Friends, and his style is accessible, respectful, and pleasant. I highly recommend this book for a good understanding of contemporary Friends. It is not entirely theoretical; it includes human experience. Very fine.

This book contains no Quaker Oats recipes but it does contain a recipe to try if you're contemplating life and religion. If your religion is just a Sunday experience and not truly the important part of your life..................give this a read. If you're a late night reader like myself this will give you plenty to think about as you fall off to sleep. My journey in life has introduced me to the Catholic religion, Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist. All these were bumps in my life's road..............As I travel the final few miles I'd like to now do it the Quaker way.

We have been in Rome three times in the past (total of 6 weeks). We used mainly the Michelin Green Guide and recommendations of our Roman friends. Nevertheless, as we have been there for the last time in 2005, we decided to refresh or memories from a brand new 2019 guide. We have chosen Rick Steves Rome 2019.I’m about 75% through the guide and I find most of the information very helpful and correct even if I would add a bit more information about some unique spots; e.g., about the foam on coffee at the Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè.Another passage could use a bit of explaining: "You’ll pass (at #16, on the right) a low-key doorway protected by security. This is the headquarters of Italy’s Democratic Party. The street becomes Via di Propaganda. You’ll pass alongside the...” (Kindle Locations 2500-2502).Not many readers will remember that the Italian Democratic Party has very different roots than the American Democratic Party – it is the Italian Communist Party that changed their name to something rather misleading. The “Democrats” mismanaged the Italian economy so badly that the current government (and the mayor of Rome) is governed by parties that were just a few years ago left- and rightwing populist movements, on the fringe of Italian politics. As this is the first guide by Rick Steves that I purchased, I did not know that he has a very childish sense of humor in addition to out of place leftist biting remarks; e.g.“And the big beige building with columns and clock houses the right-wing Il Tempo newspaper. It’s appropriately situated in what was the headquarters of the fascist party of Mussolini.” (Kindle Locations 2447-2449).Sorry Mr. Steves, the fascists were just a nationalist version of communists and had nothing to do with the right wing. This comment about the Il Tempo shows the problem with making silly comments without first checking some sources. By the way, Il Tempo was founded after Liberation of Rome, so it has no connection to the fascists. What about this childish and silly comment that a good editor should delete: “Christians blamed the fall [of Rome] on moral decay. Pagans blamed it on Christians. Socialists blamed it on a shallow economy based on the spoils of war. (Republicans blamed it on Democrats.)” (Kindle Locations 3443-3444). Why not the other way around? The final quote shows that slandering those that Mr. Steves doesn't like takes precedence over facts: “In the 1500s, the best way to keep Protestants from stealing your church members was to reason with them. By the 1600s, it was easier to kill them, and so the Thirty Years’ War raged across Europe. The church became crusted over with the colorful, bombastic, jingoistic Baroque we see today.” (Kindle Locations 2770-2772)Hello! What about reading a bit about what precipitated the Thirty Years’ War? Anyone knows what ended the Peace of Augsburg? What about the Defenestration of Prague? Were there more Roman Catholics or more Protestants killed before the Peace of Westphalia ended the carnage in 1648? Who won the Thirty Years’ War?

We just returned from 10 days in Rome. I kept this book with me all of the time. It was great for organizing self guided walks in the different areas of Rome. For example with took a bus to the Termini station and visited all of the sites the book described in that area one day. We were able to see all of the Michaelangelos, Berninis and Caravaggios scared around the city. Good descriptions of what to see at the more popular sites like the Vatican museums as well. We did have some guided tours and we noticed those tracked pretty closely with what was in the book.

This book bailed me out. We were in Venice during extreme flooding and headed to Rome. I paged through the book and found a hotel named Oceania which Rick said was a favorite of his. It was the highlight of our trip. I would never have found a hotel in the historic district with that much charm and delightfull owners without this book. It was a bargain as well.

Nobody does it like Rick Steves! I used a lot of books to plan my trip to Italy and Rick's consistently contain the most and most useful information. From train travel tips to restaurant suggestions to self-guided tours, this is the book to get. I love the little man that it came with and the level of helpful hints provided.

Rick Steve's books are the best for learning about destinations. Been using them for our last 5 trips to Europe

Rick Steves never disappoints. Handy tips, real life information and great history! In fact, we found that this book was more accurate in opening times for attractions than Google! Any time we travel, we buy Rick Steves book.

Excellent and has already payed for itself. I booked a tour to Tuscany and used a code from the book, saved me 45 bucks. This book is just filled completely with good to know information. This book will be with me in my suitcase.

As always, as great guide when we went on a trip to Rome this past October! Everything is organized well in the book and his tips are pretty much spot on!
