Amazon.com Review

If your pulse flutters at the thought of castle ruins and descents into crypts by moonlight, you will savor every creepy page of Elizabeth Kostova's long but beautifully structured thriller The Historian. The story opens in Amsterdam in 1972, when a teenage girl discovers a medieval book and a cache of yellowed letters in her diplomat father's library. The pages of the book are empty except for a woodcut of a dragon. The letters are addressed to: "My dear and unfortunate successor." When the girl confronts her father, he reluctantly confesses an unsettling story: his involvement, twenty years earlier, in a search for his graduate school mentor, who disappeared from his office only moments after confiding to Paul his certainty that Dracula--Vlad the Impaler, an inventively cruel ruler of Wallachia in the mid-15th century--was still alive. The story turns out to concern our narrator directly because Paul's collaborator in the search was a fellow student named Helen Rossi (the unacknowledged daughter of his mentor) and our narrator's long-dead mother, about whom she knows almost nothing. And then her father, leaving just a note, disappears also. As well as numerous settings, both in and out of the East Bloc, Kostova has three basic story lines to keep straight--one from 1930, when Professor Bartolomew Rossi begins his dangerous research into Dracula, one from 1950, when Professor Rossi's student Paul takes up the scent, and the main narrative from 1972. The criss-crossing story lines mirror the political advances, retreats, triumphs, and losses that shaped Dracula's beleaguered homeland--sometimes with the Byzantines on top, sometimes the Ottomans, sometimes the rag-tag local tribes, or the Orthodox church, and sometimes a fresh conqueror like the Soviet Union. Although the book is appropriately suspenseful and a delight to read--even the minor characters are distinctive and vividly seen--its most powerful moments are those that describe real horrors. Our narrator recalls that after reading descriptions of Vlad burning young boys or impaling "a large family," she tried to forget the words: "For all his attention to my historical education, my father had neglected to tell me this: history's terrible moments were real. I understand now, decades later, that he could never have told me. Only history itself can convince you of such a truth." The reader, although given a satisfying ending, gets a strong enough dose of European history to temper the usual comforts of the closing words. --Regina Marler

Starred Review. Considering the recent rush of door-stopping historical novels, first-timer Kostova is getting a big launch—fortunately, a lot here lives up to the hype. In 1972, a 16-year-old American living in Amsterdam finds a mysterious book in her diplomat father's library. The book is ancient, blank except for a sinister woodcut of a dragon and the word "Drakulya," but it's the letters tucked inside, dated 1930 and addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor," that really pique her curiosity. Her widowed father, Paul, reluctantly provides pieces of a chilling story; it seems this ominous little book has a way of forcing itself on its owners, with terrifying results. Paul's former adviser at Oxford, Professor Rossi, became obsessed with researching Dracula and was convinced that he remained alive. When Rossi disappeared, Paul continued his quest with the help of another scholar, Helen, who had her own reasons for seeking the truth. As Paul relates these stories to his daughter, she secretly begins her own research. Kostova builds suspense by revealing the threads of her story as the narrator discovers them: what she's told, what she reads in old letters and, of course, what she discovers directly when the legendary threat of Dracula looms. Along with all the fascinating historical information, there's also a mounting casualty count, and the big showdown amps up the drama by pulling at the heartstrings at the same time it revels in the gruesome. Exotic locales, tantalizing history, a family legacy and a love of the bloodthirsty: it's hard to imagine that readers won't be bitten, too. This was the first "adult" novel I read as a child, and it's still a book I come bakc to over and over as one of my favorites. I absolutely love fantasy novels that are heavily grounded in history and this book covers such a unique area of history, and accurately. The writing is superb and manages to stitch together multiple timelines seamlessly. It covers bits of history from Vlad the Impaler (the original inspiration for Dracula), the history of vampire lore, and some history of the USSR. It also doesn't put vampires in a romantic light like so many books do nowadays but makes them genuinely scary.

Now, if you are into the undead and a tour of Eastern Europe this is the book for you! This is the second time I have read this book, I enjoyed it just as much the second time. The story takes the reader on several adventures from England to Turkey to Hungary and Bulgaria. The book is full of folklore from these countries regarding Dracula and how his servants still walk among us. The cast of characters is vast and diverse, great for a book this size, yet, you are not bogged down with too many individuals to know how they fit into the story. Give it a try.

I have never heard an audio book so well read. The book includes American, British, Scottish, Italian, Turkish, Hungarian, Romanian, and Bulgarian characters. each character is read by a different reader who is at least bilingual in English and the target language, at least as far as I can tell. The effect on the realism of this book even though the book touches the world beyond, but no spoilers, would be hard to over estimate. This gives the book a cinematic quality. This is the way a book should be read, or listened to! This is the most effective audio book I have listened to, so far.

Relying heavily on found written accounts and correspondence, The Historian is an homage to Stoker's novel as much as a retelling of the Dracula legend. The characters and the way they are drawn in to the reality and threat of vampires to all who uncover their existence is engrossing. The reader also gets to know these vampire hunters much better than Stoker's statues of Victorian manly and womanly virtue. Unfortunately I found another similarity between The Historian and Dracula; an engrossing brisk beginning turns into a slog to find out how it ends. Too many teary moments, internal monologues about the anguish being experienced and every incidental local encountered warrants a paragraph of physical description. I recommend this book to anyone who likes gothic horror novels, especially about vampires which are vampires, and not unfortunate folk condemned to an appetite for blood and the nocturnal restrictions and alienation the come with it.

While this is fiction, it reads like nonfiction. It continued to draw me in for all 676 pages and beyond. I am still musing over the ending. Elizabeth Kostova did an excellent job of researching fact and interweaving fiction. I have, already, given copies, as gifts, to two friends. This is the kind of unexpected pleasure I hope for in every read; a work requiring active reading with use of my thinking process, as we journey through the pages with an intriguing plot and well-developed characters that are worth my investment of time and energy.

Good premise, but difficult to really get into. While I enjoy historical fiction as much or more than most, this story just seems to drag when it should be captivating. The plot lines are good, just seems to get lost in details, long descriptions, and random digression occasionally.

I first came across this book when my friend and I were making paper roses for her wedding decorations out of old books. She had picked this book out for its beautifully "marshmallow" aged pages - where the edges have turned a hue of golden brown. We were gluing the petals together when I saw the word "Dracula." I immediately thought, "What have we done?!" Reading the description of the book, I knew I would eventually have to read it.My interest in Dracula and Romanian lore, first peaked after reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. Then, ironically, I ended up marrying my husband, who was born and raised not 30 minutes from Castelul Bran, or better known as Dracula's castle.Enough about me, and onto the book review...This book was brilliantly written.I loved everything about this book. Yes, it is long, and takes a bit for the plot line to pick up in the beginning. But, the endurance reading is totally worth it. Kostova doesn't waste any words that she wrote, all having meaning and importance. For anyone who likes a meaty text, packed full of detail, historic locations and all-encompassing plot lines, this is for you.And please note, this is not about the Twilight-type vampires that are so prominent in today's literature. This is a twist off of the original "Dracula" novel, dedicated to the story of Vlad Tepes of Wallachia.

I finally got around to reading this after purchasing it over a decade ago. Game Theory for Applied Economists provides the reader with an approachable introduction to game theory through the description and solution of various canonical situations which can be analyzed through a game theoretic lens. The approach is not overly mathematical and the author tries to build intuition over focusing on the formal structure but includes proofs where required and develops formal definitions when needed. The topics included in the book are static games of complete information, dynamic games of complete information and the subsequent analysis of such games with incomplete information. The book starts out with analyzing game theories most famous candidate of how pareto inferior outcomes can arise naturally, the prisoner's dilemma. The author describes the analysis and brings in ideas formalizing strictly dominated strategies and subsequently iterated elimination of strictly dominated strategies. The author brings introduces ideas like strategy space, common knowledge, payoff profiles and Nash equilibrium. The author then goes on to reintroduce elementary microeconomic situations like the duopoly and how to solve such games using a game theory lens. The author introduces mixed strategies as well and gives an overview of fixed point ideas associated with the proof of an existence of a Nash equilibrium with mixed strategies. The author then gets into dynamic games and backwards induction techniques. The use of subgame solutions to get to overall game solutions is discussed and the author discusses Nash equilibriums with discounting payoffs. The author uses examples of bank runs and wage bargaining to reinforce the practical economic situations which game theory can be used as a tool to analyze. The author then gets into static games of incomplete information and starts to bring in Bayesian ideas and expectations of utility over a probability space. The subject matter is approachable but the lack of formal definitions earlier in the book starts to makes the introduction of new ideas slightly more cumbersome. The author brings up some ideas from auctions to help the reader understand decision making under uncertainty. I don't love the treatment as I think it would be better to first describe mechanism design for auctions that eliminate the need for Bayesian logic and then introduce the Bayesian game (ie Vickrey auction mechanism to start vs traditional auction mechanism to then analyze). The author then gets into multi-period games of incomplete information including the job market where worker production is noisy and monetary policy with adaptive inflation expectations. The treatment gives the reader a lot of concrete examples to think about modeling under uncertainty; the natural state of the world.Game theory for applied economists is a very readable introduction to game theory. For a reader looking for examples of how to use game theory this book is good, for a reader trying to trying to understand formal game theory better it is not as good. The use of economic examples is prioritized which is definitely useful for building intuition but it has its drawbacks for a reader moving on to read other literature where the reader will likely find themselves unprepared. Definitely recommend the book for someone looking for a quick practical introduction to the subject but for further study the book needs to be supplemented.

Easy to read. This is an ENTRY level book to Game Theory, but that is what I wanted. I read it over winter break and it helped lay the foundation for me to ace a PhD level Game Theory course.

I got this book as an accompaniment for a Game Theory class I am taking currently. I enjoyed reading this on the side. It was not as easy to read as my assigned textbook but I felt that it went into greater depth about certain subjects vs. the traditional game theory book.I would recommend this for Econ majors (such as myself) or those with a particular penchant for Game Theory.

This is was my textbook when I was pursuing my PhD in economics. 7 years after graduating, I still enjoy review it from time to time.

The stuff in the book really met my academics requirements. Almost all I needed is found in this book.

Great book with just the right balance between game theory and applied economics. Don't get it if you really want hard core game theory proofs. There are plenty of equations and some proofs, but the real focus is on how the results of game theory can be applied to economic problems.

This book contains the very basics of game theory. Really detailed and well explained, although the examples are simple. I would prefer more elaborate examples for difficult cases.

This is a nice book on game theory if you're not very mathematically inclined. It was recommended as a supplementary text for a graduate-level course that I took, and I enjoyed it as such. But for a more thorough introductory text for undergrads, I strongly recommend Osborne's An Introduction to Game Theory. This one is preferable only if you're allergic to rudimentary set theory.

Without the benefit of scuba diving classes and a collection of rented equipment, most children will not grow to see the coral reefs of the world in person. Brought vividly to life in the imaginations of children through the major animated film Finding Nemo and the short, live action segments that make up "Come See the Sea" on children's television programming, the coral reefs of the world serve as a sticky point of interest to delve into the life cycles of the creatures who make this fascinating ecosystem their home.In Coral Reef - part of the One Small Square series for six to nine-year-old children, an in-depth, vividly illustrated journey travels through a small portion of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. Focusing in on an three-dimensional section of reef measuring four feet to a side and extending down in a rectangular column roughly twice that in length, series author Donald M. Silver guides young readers through the intricacies of reef flora, fauna, reproduction, nocturnal creatures, inter-species cooperation and many other fascinating features of this vibrant ecosystem. With such a treasure of interesting animals and plants to work with, Silver unearths a plethora of fascinating trivia, facts, and foundational premises for life in the reef. From fish that cover themselves with slime at night to mask their aroma, to those who masquerade as friendly helpers in order to steal a bit of flesh, a wealth of memorable encounters are brought vividly to life through the visual pictures crafted through a vivid use of descriptive prose. In Silver's trademark style the dangers in currents around reefs for divers is briefly pointed out, as well as some short safety tips. Although Silver realizes that children aren't likely to be making a hands-on exploration of the reef themselves, the series-wide emphasis on appropriate safety precautions makes its presence known in this title as well.Due to the improbability of children exploring reefs in diving equipment Silver has substituted hands-on observational activities and experiments that illustrate the scientific concepts explored from the perspective of reef life. For example, after the observation of nocturnal reef life through the pages of Coral Reef, Silver encourages children to record their own findings regarding nocturnal plant and animal life in their own backyards. Instructions for a simple reef diorama, building a reef with Lego, observing the grooming habits of domestic animals and many other educational activities are also provided to turn the book into a multi-sensory educational experience.Patrica J. Wynne's incredibly detailed illustrations draw children into the exotic world of the reef - filled with colour, motion, and incredible complexities. Her work is realistic and stands out as the work of a truly talented artist in the school of natural observation. Though created for children, her elaborate reconstructions of reef life on the page can compare favorably with the work of any other naturalist. Our entire family, young and old, admired the artwork; my three-year-old was particularly taken in by the visual glossary of each creature mentioned in the text at the back of the book. We read the book in bite-sized chunks - though written in a form more narrative than textbook, there is still a great deal of information to be digested.Whether your child's interest in reefs has been sparked by a famous film or visit to the fish section of a local pet store; whether you are preparing for a visit to a public aquarium that feature displays which recreate life in the reef or planning a unit study on coral reefs. No matter how you approach it, Coral Reef is sure to fascinate.

This is a lovely graphic, as well as informative, little primer on the wonders that wait you if you happen to be going on a family vacation that involves reef snorkelling or just want to explore the underwater in your child's mind's eye. We were lucky enough to go "Snorkelling on the 'Barrie" (the Great Barrier Reef), off Cairns - Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef as well as off a platform near Green Island. My almost 10 year old was just about fit to be tied by the time we got our gear on and he just wanted to go meet these beautiful creatures he had been reading about. Real life potato cod "Gertrude" and a lovely "Maori Wrasse" named 'Wally' and other reef life are stunning but also very evident is the damage that so called eco-tourism is actually doing to the Barrie and reefs just like it - lots of dead coral. The book addresses these issues simply too but the Australians seem to have a better understanding of the yin-yang of eco-tourism and sustaining livelihoods of people who care about the environment in a way that is more practical and accepting of all view points having a place at the table.

I had a totally different conception of what this book was going to be (don't even ask, im kinda embarrassed now just thinking about it). other reviews are right, this is one of the most beautifully illustrated books ive ever seen! The level of detail is incredible. The names of the "chapters" are cute, and is the whole darn thing. I bought it for a 4th grader who love nature but has some mental challenges and can't read for himself very well, if at all. Hopefully his parents will take the time to read all the factoids included in each "level" of the square. I think he will love knowing about all the different marine life and find it fascinating. The book will definitely intrigue readers of all ages.

Beautiful illustrations great information. Students love it.

A delightful way to introduce young children to the coral reef. Has activity pages which can be duplicated.

We are homeschooling next year and using this series as the basis for my 1st grade science. They have amazing pictures and so much information plus extra supplemental activities. Awesome books!

Met all my expectations. Thank you.
