Such an interesting read.. really gives you an insight to the amazing Mexican artisans/artists of this craft/trade, a real look into where/why this originated, and why collectors will pay good money for these beautiful works of art. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the Oaxacan carving/painting art, or Mexican culture.

I just bought the book to look at the pictures and get creative ideas, I had no idea how interesting the commentary would be. I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute of it. Have forwarded the book to my daughter so she can enjoy the insight these authors give to life in the wood carving villages. I would love to read an update, since the book was written in 1993 - wonder if NAFTA had any effect?

My copy of Oaxacan Woodcarving: The Magic in the Trees arrived just before my husband and I left the U.S. for a 3-month RV tour through several states of Mexico. Much of our 4 weeks in Oaxaca were spent in small villages enjoying the colorful works and the artisans who created them. We saw a wide variety of styles and themes, many of which are represented in this book. What gorgeous colors and what a sense of humor!

This book made me want to rush out and get carving tools, and paint. It is an amazing account of a clever people who make art from nature. And they do it so well. Their imaginations are a true inspiration to all artists.. I reread it every couple of weeks.He who hesitates,.........

Not as many pictures of the wonderful animals as I had hoped. Half of the carvings pictured are people, mermaids, day of the dead. Better carvings pictured online

I was expecting pictures of alebrijes but this book covers woodcarvings with less intricate designs and very simple figures. If you are looking for a book with traditional carvings from South of the border try ABeCedarios: Mexican Folk Art ABCs in English and Spanish if you are working with children. One excellent, yet a lot more expensive book, is ALEBRIJES. OBRAS MAESTRAS DE ESCULTORES Y PINTORES MEXICANOS [Hardcover] by Hartmut ZANTKE. For the true connoisseur of alebrijes this extensive, and amazingly beautiful collection is a lot more suitable.
