This is an important book which covers many situations that you would most likely encounter if you were visiting Japan for business. Know how to present your business card, how to hold it (do not put the card in your back pocket!) proper table manners, etc. It works for tourism as well. Slights and unintentional rudeness are forgiven by the Japanese if you are a foreigner (gaijin). But, knowing the polite gestures will bring smiles because of your willingness to please.
Great book for anyone interested in Japanese social & business customs. Casual readers and 1st time travelers will find this to be the perfect crash course in Japanese etiquette. Aside from a few black & white photos, there are no visuals to speak of, but don't let that disuade you! Brief, well-written chapters; Casually written for general audience with the last several chapters focused on doing business with the Japanese. Great, up-to-date resource on everything from dating, to eating, gift-giving, and MUCH more.
I just returned from Japan and this book saved me from many faux pas that an American would never have thought would be offensive or rude such as where to stand (and not stand) in an elevator, As soon as I entered my first Japanese home I instantly felt comfortable and natural and knew exactly what to do...the authors are excellent teachers.
Short but power packed, this guide covers all the bases for traveling and doing business, the latter superficially as it's worthy of entire books. Loved the detailed info on bathing, toilets, gifts, temples. - all the etiquette situations you most need. He also does an excellent job of explaining how Japanese people think and how history explains the present. Don't travel without it.
Very informative for non-Japanese. A good beginner's guide. I would recommend this to anyone planning to visit Japan wanting to make an instant impression. More prolonged study is required if you're planning a prolonged residency.
Very useful if you don't want to screw up and helps you not to offend traditional and modern Japanese culture on your trip to Japan.Especially with elders and adults.
Working in the IT industry, many of my colleges already speak English but learning the intricacies of Japanese culture was vital for better cohesion and team building during my stay. Weekend travel confirmed everything this book discussed as still important in 2017 for a 30 year old American visitor.
I read this book in its entirety in one day. Well worth a read if you are doing business in or with a Japanese company.
