I am at the dissertation phase of my doctoral degree and I thought the book would be of some help.... I was wrong! How can I say this nicely, “what a crappy book”Please don’t waste your money, if you want a really good book! Get: The Dissertation Warrior, by Guy E. White, Ed.D. Now that was an amazing book!

The author strives to give the dissertation candidate confidence by offering key strategies that speak to diligence. Rather than providing guidance on how to be successful in the individual elements of a dissertation paper, Ms. Bolker uses her successful and unsuccessful dissertation experience to prompt the applicant to be confident, not scared...to be diligent when attacking a dissertation, but she does not offer guidance on how to complete a proposal, do research...etc.She is clear that her book title does not suggest 15 minutes a day will suffice for dissertation success, rather explains that the point of the title is that dissertation work must come first...each day...several hours a day or 5 pages a day. Her book speaks to structure and priority in the dissertation process...basically, the student must write something...anything...each day. She is successful in making the reader believe that the task-at-hand is a surmountable one. E.g., she explains that trying to get it right the first time (each paragraph or chapter draft) is not only NOT necessary, but detrimental...success is in the writing...initial quantity is better than initial quality. The final sections in her book provide guidance on how to publish the completed dissertation. Perhaps if I were at the point of the dissertation phase, I might have better appreciated those "publication" sections, but at my current status, I found those sections to be page fillers...hence, my four stars instead of five.

Good, common sense approach to working through the dissertation process, from selection of topic and advisor to transforming the dissertation into a potential book. The emphatic call to "just write" and the zero draft were good reminders that the process is more about getting the ideas out and revised than writing the perfect document - especially the first time through. I picked up some good tips and reminders. Good, if getting dated.

Title is mostly a hook not actual advice. Main idea is to get the job done you need to write every day probably by setting up a page goal every day. That is not to say this isn't a useful book as a pep talk on how to start and keep writing, but it could just as easily be how to write a novel in 15 minutes a day. Some nuggets, but not super advice. It is an engaging book on a dry subject lots of fun terms for things and lots of blast from the past including diskettes and CDROM as a luxury item. Worth reading from the library probably not purchasing

This small book really helped me to get my dissertation done and I frequently recommend it to aspiring candidates and others with big writing tasks in front of them. She really speaks to the heart and gets you going with motivation, clarity about your goals, and logic. The advice about choosing emotionally supportive advisers is priceless and, while I had already made that choice, getting it validated helped me so much. There are tons of gems in this slim volume. Get it, you won't be sorry. (PS: I now teach writing myself.)

I found the book to be extremely helpful throughout my dissertation writing. It is not about the logistics of writing a dissertation, or about writing mechanics. It is rather about everything else that affects you at this stage, from internal distractions and issues, to external ones. It helped me realize that what I'm going through is entirely normal, and gave me helpful tips and advice to get through the rough patches. I strongly recommend this book to anyone writing a thesis or dissertation

I like that the book is kinda unconventional. So it starts you off small on writing time & breaks up the writing process for you. It also foregrounds the creative part of the writing vs. scholarly quotes. What really worked for me was the suggestion that you free write and note everything dissertation & phd related that comes to mind- have it stored in your file. That really helps me write everyday- makes me feel like the writing is about stashing my ideas & thoughts- all of it rather than some laborious process every time. I like that I can have fun with naming stuff & titles. Works wonderfully well with Peg Boyle Single's book esp. For the nonconventional, 30+ year old scholar like me for whom schedules don't really work without a fun stake.

Joan Bolker is a clinical psychologist who specializes in helping writers get over their problems. Also she has worked in the Harvard Writing Lab, so she has a great deal of experience with writers of dissertations. This experience really shines in this book. She approached the problem of writing from a psychological angle. She covers some common problems faced by graduate students and gives practical advice for overcoming these obstacles. The key to writing is to write while you are thinking, or even before. If you attempt to write after thinking, you will block out a lot of ideas before they have a chance to mature. The important thing is to get your thoughts out onto paper, then after you collect lots of ideas, go back over what you wrote and pick out the pearls. If you edit yourself while you're writing, you tend to be overly critical and the negativity blocks the flow of the writing process. Actually, I think this book would be great not only for dissertation writers, but for writers of any kind. If you're facing a wall in your writing, this book could help you out a lot.

At the time of this particular review there have already been four previous reviews of this work. It is suggested that any reader of this review should also note the other four, all of which whose comments I fully agree. One of the primary reasons for my review is to give a five-star rating to the Kindle e-book version (since it appears all previous reviews were based on the paperback version of this great work). This review is to assure any prospective buyer of the e-book version will be well satisfied. In fact, I think it is a 'must-read'. Since there is no active table of contents provided, it is suggested that on the initial reading of the text, the reader establish a table of contents with locations in a computer spread-sheet so as to facilitate later readings of this material.

Time and time again, so skillfully, does Mr. Bonar bring us back to the Finished Work on the Cross by Jesus Christ for the salvation of all His people. There is a very long section, that I skipped through addressing a real problem in the 19th Century when this was written. It is very good for those not familiar with what brethren in years gone by had to deal with. Truly, "There is nothing new under the sun"! It does not detract from the main thread running through--Christ alone for salvation with nothing else added to His Finished Work on the Cross!

An excellent treatment of our righteousness in Christ. Chapter 8 is worth the price all by itself."For the cross saves completely, or not at all. Our faith does not divide the work of salvation between itself and the cross. It is the acknowledgement that the cross alone saves, and it saves alone. Faith adds nothing to the cross nor to its healing virtue. It owns the fullness and the sufficiency and the suitableness of the work done there and bids the toiling spirit cease from its labours and enter into rest. Faith does not come to Calvary to do anything. It comes to see the glorious spectacle of all things done and to accept this completion without misgiving as to its efficacy. It listens to the "It is finished" of the sin-bearer and says "Amen!" Where faith begins, there labour ends--labour, I mean, for life and for pardon. Faith is rest, not toil. It is the giving up of all the former weary efforts."And from chapter 2: "With a weak faith and a fearful heart, many a sinner stands before the altar. But it is not the strength of his faith, but the perfection of the sacrifice, that saves; and no feebleness of faith, no dimness of eye, no trembling of hand, can change the efficacy of our burnt-offering. The vigor of our faith can add nothing to it, nor can the poverty of it take anything from it. Faith, in all its degrees, still reads the inscription, 'The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin;' and if at times the eye is so dim that it cannot read these words, through blinding tears or bewildering mist, faith rests itself on the certain knowledge of the fact that the inscription is still there, or at least that the blood itself (of which these words remind us) remains, in all its power and suitableness, upon the altar unchanged and unaffected."

Bonar's pastoral spirit comes through clearly in this basic review of the Christian faith. He clarifies what it is - and what it is not. Yet his exposition is not so simplistic the books only applies to the new believer. There is meat for the seasoned pilgrim. Nonetheless, Bonar's primary audience does appear to be those still struggling to understand 'what' Christ has done and 'how' this applies to me. Easy to read - clear presentation - and a topic which the true Christian will never tire of studying.

I have only read 3 works by Horatius, but he has quickly become one of my favorite authors. He writes with clarity, theological understanding, and a strong Gospel focus. He never wanders far from the cross in his writings, and if you want to be motivated in your Christian life properly, out of gratitude and not fear, then you will want to pick this up.God's Way of Peace is very-very good as well.

This is one of the most critical books to read as a Christian. It will stir you and push you toward the text of Scripture and encourage and strengthen your faith.

A massively important work on God's means of salvation. Cannot recommend more highly.

This book was recommended by my pastor as "one of the five greatest devotional commentaries of all time," so I was thrilled to discover it was a free Kindle download. Bonar intently focuses on Christ's righteousness imputed to us in a life-changing manner. Excellent book!

Very detailed book ... much needed for that collector or arms dealer... little to big for what I needed it for but still a much needed item.

Much flimsier than I anticipated. I'd rather have spent the money on a sturdy notebook like a Five Star and just written 'Gun Log Book' on the front in Sharpie.

Excellent book for sellers or owners. Personally I use it for my firearms rather than sales, but it's design can easily accomodate both. I'd recommend this product for sellers and those who just wish to keep accurate records of their firearms.

Large book, great for record keeping

Very cool item better than I expected.

I personally didn't like the layout of the inside of the book, but it would suit it's purpose for someone who likes to paste pictures when they are creating a new entry.

I'm a GRE tutor, and I'm reviewing this book from that perspective. GRE For Dummies is a good book to get if you're happy with an average score or you don't have much time to work on the test, but this is not a great choice for people who want competitive scores.There is plenty of good advice in the book about the test, the math, and the essays. But due to the book's length, it will get you familiar with things but probably not actually get you to MASTER those things. If you want a high score, you want mastery, not just familiarity.The practice question and passage difficulty / complexity and the robustness of verbal techniques leave something to be desired. Real GRE questions are harder and more complex than the ones in this book. The technique in this book may work well with its practice questions, but success with real GRE questions will demand better technique and flexibility.I'd recommend the Manhattan GRE series over this book, unless you really don't have that much time to work on the test. Hopefully you do, since for most people, getting ready for the GRE is not as easy as this book would have you believe. In the experience of most of my students, they need much more than a "refresher".

I am taking my GRE this week and I was very nervous in particular about the math section. I've never been strong at math, so I attempted to combine several resources to give me a comprehensive review for the quantitative portion.I used Magoosh (Website with video lessons), this edition of GRE for dummies, and GRE Princeton review (2015 ed) and I would rank them in terms of math help asMagoosh > GRE for dummies > GRE princeton review.Why? Well, in terms of math, Magoosh was just hands down the most comprehensive. In fact, I figured it might be too comprehensive for my taste, because I only had two weeks to prepare. It takes a lot of time to learn the material from Magoosh because the instructor starts from ground zero. The GRE for dummies also starts from ground zero, but quickly picks up the pace and there are a lot of shortcuts involved, without explaining why, which is NOT a bad thing. Compared to Magoosh, this was very brisk, and I assume those who pay for Magoosh's service want that perfect 340 score. With that said, I found that the GRE for dummies covered more quantitative information than the GRE princeton edition, especially in the geometry section and breaking down word problems (Which some parts did not even appear in the 2015 Princeton edition).The verbal section was quite comprehensive as well, and has given me the tools to feel confident during the verbal portion of the exam. However, I must say that some of the vocabulary (400+ in this edition) are just downright unhelpful due to confusing. Some examples include:Eschew: To keep clear of (Google says: deliberately avoid using; abstain from.)Gaffe: A social blunder; faux pas (Google says: an unintentional act or remark causing embarrassment to its originator)Garrulous: Prone to trivial talking (Google says: excessively talkative, especially on trivial matters.)etc. I'm not saying these definitions are wrong, but they just aren't always helpful in my opinion. When I created my vocab words on Quizlet app, I had to change a lot of these definitions up so that I could more readily understand them. I suppose this can be overlooked by some, but for me, this was my biggest criticism, and would suggest that you change the definitions in a way that you understand and can memorize.Overall, I really enjoyed this edition, although I noticed there was a 2015 edition released earlier this year. I would recommend this edition, but you may as well pick up the newest version to see if there are any significant changes to stay up to date with the ever changing GRE exam.EDIT: So I took the GRE yesterday and out of the two math sections I got, only one reflected the kinds of questions that I had. The first portion was difficult, so I believe I scored so poorly that they downgraded my second section, where I got most of them right. So I believe that the take away is that the quantitative section is actually harder than the practice questions in this edition, in regards to the quantitative section.

For all those who gave this book bad reviews, I would like to say it’s not fair. This book is not intended to prepare you to have the highest grade in GRE, there are other books for that, the book itself tells you to do more than this book, but if you are like me, haven’t touched on math for more than 10 years, have no clue where or with what to start and have no clue of the system of the GRE, then this is the book for you, it gives you an idea of what exactly to study in both math and english, with basic practices and exams, it tells you how the examiners think when writing the questions, it tells you exactly how to prepare for the exam, what happens in it and even what to do in the intermission you get during the exam. It’s so perfect to begin with and then take it deeper and going more intense with other books. I am so in love with this book, it saved me lots of worry and stress. Highly recommend as your first step. And honestly, if your goal is just to pass the GRE, you probably wouldn’t need more than this book, so it all depends on what you want as your grade.

Really nice book. I would suggest taking several months to read through it and digest the material thoroughly. The books gives great hints and strategies for approaching the GRE. The book also excels in giving general information about the testing experience (i.e. what is required for you to bring, some of the testing procedures et cetera). This can help reduce anxiety (as it did for me) about the procedures on test day.The book does have one shortcoming. The math (quantitative reasoning) section is very dense and quite hard to read (again, take plenty of time in advance to read through it). It fails to adequately explain some of the concepts; and, for people like myself who are inept at math, this can be a real frustration. I would suggest getting a supplemental math book to go along with this one. Overall, very helpful and I would certainly recommend

Given the demands of real life, and knowing myself well enough to be aware that my will and attention span for such endeavors is fleeting, this book served its purpose as a good cursory overview of the GRE. As many other reviewers mention, if you truly want to be prepared to the maximum extend, you'll need to augment your studies with additional tools. In particular, I felt that the math (quantitative) sections just barely scratch the surface. I spent about a week to crank through this book from cover to cover and feel that it was definitely a beneficial purchase. Buona fortuna.
