This book is a very good mix of writing of many different authors all detailing on the idea of what is the meaning of Modern, Western and Civilized. More specifically, a number of the essay within the book are about things such as the enlightenment, the french revolution, how the state should be, etc. Some of the essays are not easy reads, but that doesn't make it any less important too read in the first place. All in all, if you are studying the enlightenment and/or taking a 'Modern Western Civilization' class or just interested, this is a good book to read for getting the ideas of how people during those time periods saw things.

The read and print is bad. Then the book itself fell apart because the binding came loose.

It wasn't as enticing as I had expected but it is never the less worth the read in order to grasp the different dynamics that lead to nationalist sentiments

Shortly after I got this book and started to read it, great clumps of pages started falling out of the binding. It was like the hair of a chemotherapy patient. The readings selected for inclusion in this book are good, but you wont' be able to hold onto them long. They will disintegrate in your very hands.

 Love this book. Great pictures and history on historic Vegas properties that are no longer around. Please see my video for a better look.

Great book. It relives the Vegas that was (the one that I first remember) and the Vegas that is now. Somehow, I just think that it was better back then but, that's just my opinion. It's a great pictorial for the visitors to see just what it was like in the past and how the town has developed into what it is today. The vintage photos (the hotels and buildings, the people, the clothes, the cars) are really great to see. Anyone interested in seeing parts of an age that will never be again will enjoy this book.

So many books on cities, towns, destinations. Las Vegas has a multitude of such books. I chose this one by reviews and just plain guessing. Glad I ordered. Very well done. Organized by each decade starting in the 50's and on into the 2010's. Within each decade, hotels/attractions listed alphabetically. Each property boldly indicates the year of the fates of each. Consequently, most closed and/or demolished in ensuing years. Architecture, so cool over the 50 years and almost all gone now. So glad I made it a point to visit as many of the older casinos and lounges in the 70's and 80's! Sorry to say but if you've only visited the city in the last 10 or so years you really missed it. The ultra cool years are long gone. Las Vegas now has nothing worth viewing in my opinion. Sad.

I love Las Vegas & have been going for many years. This is the best book that I have seen!! It is full of beautiful color pictures, descriptions & stories of Las Vegas from the 1940's through the 2010's. -- I highly recommend this to anyone who loves to read about the history, & enjoy beautiful photos of this amazing city!

I lived in North Las Vegas till we moved on base at Nellis AFB. this brought back lots memories. A must have if you ever lived there and moved away. This has a lot of good pictures and history.

This is a fantastic book. The way it's organized makes it easy to browse though and read a bit at a time. You can pick out the properties you have interest in and just read about those, or make your way through the whole book. Presented in a very easy to read style.

If you lived in or visited Las Vegas anytime from the 1950's to the 1990's you will love this great picture book, which is packed with lots of info about many gone but not forgotten properties. Highly recommended!

I got interested in what happened to many of the old Las Vegas casinos, so I bought a half dozen books on the subject. This one was by far the best one. Great pictures and laid out in a way that makes it easy to track the history of some of Las Vegas' historic casinos and hotels. Highly recommended

I'm probably the biggest fan of Luis Royo, and was very excited to see a best of book.Why am I disappointed with this book? Because almost all of the images here are zoomed in or extremely cropped. the zoomed pics show more detail than avaialable in Royo's other books, but no way does this make up for the what's missing from the complete pieces. It's like widescreen movies vs fullscreen. Maybe if your are not familiar with the original version you would love it.To me and I image other fans the changes stick out like a sore thumb.Also I feel it's more of a highlights of Royo than a true best of, because this book contains a lot of sketches of the final pieces, found in conceptions I & II.Those should of been excluded since there's no way sketches could be considered "best of".If anyone is interested in buying this book I recommend you see it in person first. It's really a shame to see his art so edited and clipped. If not for the 2 or 3 new images found only in this book, I would return it or resell it.If you're looking for a good collection of the best of Royo, for the same price as this book, you could get his 3 first books Women, Malefic, & Secrets. Also Visions is really good.

This was a gift to my daughter. She is very pleased with it and said seeing the works in new perspectives and in various stages is inspiring for her own artwork.

High-gloss pages. Type of book you would put on a coffee table or in a bookcase as part of an art collection. Like 90% of Royo's work, you might not want to keep it out if you have children running around.

Bought this for my boyfriend who loves Luis Royo, it's a sturdy book and has nice printed images of Luis Royo's art work, can't wait to purchase another book like it for our Luis Royo collection. :)

 I am a fan of Luis Royo mainly because I use to buy Heavy Metal magazine. He was often featured on the cover and inside. He has the whole fantasy woman thing down without a doubt. They are beyond beautiful. Even when they seem to be covered in the grime of the world in which they exsist they have that spark of beauty that only Royo can capture. So why only 4 stars you must be asking yourself. Well I have to agree with another reviewer that points out the fact that these images have been cut up and cropped poorly. Why charge so much and not give the fans the whole piece of art work on one whole page? I was so excited to get this to only be let down because it did not meet my expectations. Perhaps they were too high? I do like the book alot but I don't love it like I really wanted too. I've added a video so you can judge for yourself. I'm still glad I have it but I feel like I don't have the best yet.

I have been looking for a book to help explain to my eight year old daughter exactly what we mean when we say she has autism. We don't normally talk about it much. She has her things she is naturally good at and things she has to work harder at, but such is being human. However, her school is doing a number of things for autism awareness month and I thought a book might help, so I perused this one at our library.There are a number of things this book does really well. It explains the basics of autism clearly at a child's level, but even older kids could read it without being talked down to. Explanations are simple and straightforward. The illustrations are generally well done, especially one of what looks like a child stimming (hand flapping, if I remember correctly). There is also a little bit of discussion about what a child with autism might be especially good at. But after reading the book, I thought, "Well, this might be good for siblings or classmates, but I don't really want my daughter reading it."The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I wasn't sure I wanted siblings or classmates reading this one, either. My main objection to this book is that I don't want my child to feel bad about herself or to be an object of pity. My daughter thinks she is awesome, because she is. I am concerned that this book could introduce some doubt.The book is clearly aimed at neurotypical children. I get that. But must some behaviors that these NT children might see be described as something they might find "strange"? Maybe could we talk about being "surprised by" or "curious about" said behavior? And several of the drawings depict children with autism looking extremely sad, hunched, and pitiful. Sorry, that doesn't jive with how I see my kid or how she sees herself, and I am not going to introduce that idea to her or anyone else.Overall, this book has a lot going for it, but I can't unequivocally recommend it. I like the information, but would have preferred a more neutral presentation.

I should’ve listened to the other review of this book. It has a very negative tone to it, and points out all the differences, and makes no attempt to find common ground between those with Autism and neurotypical children. Many of the pictures depict a “sad” child with autism and the others happy and playing. Although I don’t like the negative language in the book, the fact that it is very detailed about some typical behaviors that you might see in a child with moderate Autism could be helpful when discussing differences in a classroom. I was planning to read this to my preschoolers for Autism Awareness month, so it wasn’t what I was looking for. I liked “Because We’re Friends” much more, so that’s the one I would go with!

I work at a childcare center and my grandson has autism. I got this book so the children in his class can understand what he is going through. I think it is a wonderful book!

One of the books I purchased in april to bring awareness to my autistic son(s) and his school. The book was read to the entire school. He was 6 at the time and the book is so clear and yet so delicate in a matter of bringing those connections to their brains about Autisim. He made such powerful eye contact with me during the book and had a fear in his eye only I could understand. He then asked me after if he had autisim. I asked him if he identified with the character and he replied yes. I admitted to him that I did too. 💙

I bought this book for my children(6 yrs, 4 yrs, 9months) after my 4 yr old was diagnosed. When we received this book I hadn't discussed autism with any of them, and I was hoping this book would help teach them about autism.My 4 yr old ASD child didn't even make through the first page before he was wandering the room. But, after we were about 2-3 pages into the book my 6 yr old looked and me and said, "Mom, my brother has autism." I asked him why he thought that I and he said because his brain works differently.this book was a good starting point for talking about autism and learning a little about autism for small children, much better thanMy Brother is Autistic (Let's Talk About It Books). I will read it to my youngest when she is a little older as well.

I love this. I have three daughters, ages 8 1/2, 7 1/2, and 5. My oldest is autistic. My middle daughter has struggled the most with patience over the last few years as she gets older. Autism has been a constant her entire existence and for longer than the youngest’s. She loves to tell anyone when she’s introducing her sister, “This is my sister, ****, she has autism.” Lol. And she kind of knows what that means, but not really...This book is going to be amazing for my younger two. And help teach them ways to spread the understanding for their sister.

This was for my granddaughters, one has ADD/ADHD and high end Autism. They where really excited about reading the books. Her sister said I really love this book because now I understand my sister even better.

My 7yrs old has autism and I purchased this book for his classroom. The teacher read it to the class and they talked about autism. It sounds like it was well received by the kids and that they enjoyed learning more about my boy. I'm hoping they show him a little bit more patience, he scripts and repeat a lot and I'm hoping they understand it better now. I read it myself with my boy and I found it very well written. My little boy really liked too!

This is an absolutely beautiful collection. Anyone who likes Pratchett should absolutely get it and add it to their Library

The shipping was incredibly fast.Now I'm a Pratchett fan. No way would I ever DISLIKE anything by him, or any artwork based on his works. Ok? But I was just overwhelmed by the genuine high quality of this work. It's very much worth what I spent on it.

Such beautiful art based on the works of my favorite author. It captures the mood of the books perfectly.

The phenomenal pictures, include preliminary sketches never before published, are a joy to behold. This artwork expands the enjoyment of Pratchett's amazingly creative written works.

All the artwork is fantastic but a lot of it was already published in the "Art of Discworld"And I really wish the two-page spreads were fold-outs.

Great images from Discworld and other Pratchett stories. Funny and beautiful reminders of a rich world I have loved visiting in all the novels.

Mostly a reprint of artwork from other books. If you have bought Art of Discworld and the Last Hero you would have the majority of what is in here.
