About the Author

Larry Reithmaier is a retired aerospace engineer who, while at McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell International, helped design and develop the F2H, F3, F86H, F100, F101, and F4 jet fighters, the B-1B bomber, and the Apollo and Skylab spacecrafts. Catherine Kerrison is an associate professor of history at Villanova University, where she teaches courses in Colonial and Revolutionary America and women’s and gender history. I suspect some people may stumble upon this book not getting that it is a scholarly work and not a historical fiction, and those people will no doubt be disappointed, but if you're in it for what it is, you won't be -- and I wasn't.I don't think I've ever read a work on history where, on reading, I more strongly found myself more obviously rooting for the historian to able to find what she seeks in her elusive subjects -- here, in Catherine Kerrison's case, most especially the elusive Harriet Hemings, about whom so frustratingly little is known. And after enjoying reading the fascinating research here, still feeling frustrated for Kerrison -- and for American history -- that we may never know more about her.If you've read many other books on this topic, then no, maybe you won't feel that there's much new here in the way of information, but at this point in time, without the appearance of some truly revelatory discovery -- the likes of which become less and less likely to be found, as the years go by -- it may be necessary to expect that books on this topic don't have to present something new to present something freshly, as I think this book does.Besides being already aware of Madison Hemings' oh-so-tantalizing suggestion in an interview during his lifetime that he felt reasonably certain that no one ever found out that his sister -- whomever she reinvented herself as later -- was Harriet Hemings of Monticello, I found Ms. Kerrison's analysis of who she might have been captivating. I did not feel that Ms. Kerrison was at all trying to force conjecture upon the reader; I read it as she was merely sharing research findings that clearly represent a life's work for her. I was very impressed with the research -- she went through hundreds of women from census records, ferreted out nearly 60 Harriets, and then meticulously analyzed the circumstances and life histories of all of them to launch a process of elimination (wow). I enjoyed this section of the book most of all. Then again, I never went into this book expecting any new earth-shattering truth about Harriet to be revealed (much like the fact that you just somehow kinda know that Bigfoot probably won't be found at any conclusion of any episode of "Finding Bigfoot"). Sometimes the search can be just as interesting and gripping as the results (or lack of).While the evident and obvious separation between these women lies in the fact that one is enslaved and the other two are not, Ms. Kerrison does an especially insightful job of demonstrating that the mere condition of being female in this era was one of shocking limitations, and it makes one suppose that were it not for the connection with Jefferson, we'd know nothing about any of them -- even Martha, about whom the most is known.There is an especially skillfully done passage devoted to Maria Jefferson Eppes' son stumbling upon her defunct harpsichord and disintegrating music books, years after her death, cast off someplace by his father's second wife. It is a symbolic thought of a woman whose identity was literally crumbling away into history, even in the era in which she lived.It's a sad truth about all too many women in American history, and I appreciated and enjoyed Ms. Kerrison's efforts to shine a light on these three.

There have been several attempts to deal with this presidential family. This one is careful and conservative. The main interest of many readers will be the parentage of Jefferson’s ‘slave’ sexual partner.Tbhe author didn’t attempt to fill in what is not known. However I think that more could have been done. DNA evidence of the Henning girl has become available but is not mentioned in this book. It’s about time to stop pulling punches on this delicate matter. Also some attention to what we know about Sally Hennings could have been emphasized. This has been of interest to Americans for over 200 years. Sally was the half sister of Jefferson’s wife! This is not ignored by the author but it is not emphasized either. Surely he must have been startled by the resemblance wheneve he saw her and it’s not surprising that he was drawn to her. Also the families that came out of this union over the period since Jefferson’s death are also known but given nearly no attention. Instead perhaps too much attention is given to the adolescent activities and attitudes of the three daughters when they were young; I found that of limited interest, and didn’t find them necessarily convincing. Nevertheless I am glad I went over this material again with a researcher who worked hard to find what she did discover. Recommended for those who know little about this presidents family life.

I found this a rather interesting book authored by a skilled professor of colonial/revolutionary and gender history at Villanova. There are several unique features which add to the value of the book. The author has included along with Jefferson's two daughters (Martha and Maria) with his wife Martha, a third purported daughter (Harriet) with his slave, the famous Sally Hemings. This allows the author to discuss a good deal about slavery at Monticello and TJ's relationship with all four of his children by Sally Hemings. So the book nicely complements Annette Gordon-Reed's stupendous "The Heminges of Monticello: An American Family." The author has dug out every known fact about Harriet which is a service in itself since little has been written about her. Another advantage of the book is that finally someone is focusing on Jefferson's second daughter, Maria. She has generally been ignored or discounted in light of the overwhelming figure of her sister Martha who was so like Jefferson and rich in attainments. But even the material on Martha, who has been so well profiled by Cynthia Kierner in her masterly "Martha Jefferson Randolph," is outstandingly researched and fresh.I think another of the outstanding features demonstrated in the book is tied to the author's specialization in women's history (if I may use that term). As a result, the author's focus is somewhat broader that that written by a male historian: she discusses the education women and girls received in both France and America; the expectations for what role's women would play in the early 19th century; the limitations imposed upon women by Virginia culture; and the dangerous risks of child birth during this period. The constraints imposed by Jefferson on his daughters was an aspect with which I was not particularly familiar.One of the most innovative sections of the book (pp. 286-300) is where the author recounts her incredibly complex search here in Washington to try and ascertain what happened to Harriet when with TJ's cooperation and support she left Virginia for a new life passing as white. While in the end she cannot solve this mystery, her extraordinary skills and inventiveness as a historian are on display.Of course, we learn a good deal about Jefferson himself--but really the book belongs to his daughters. As can be imagined the author's research is exhaustive, and where she relies upon speculation to fill some gaps, it is reasonable and informed speculation and did not bother me a bit. 50 pages of notes, and an 11 page bibliography are included, along with a fine index. Definitely a solid addition to the extensive literature on Jefferson and his times.

In this particular case, AltaVista was the one attempting the (failed) blitzscaling while Google followed more traditional product perfection strategies.The book also made me think about the articles I've been reading in the Wall Street Journal regarding Tesla and Elon Musk's current challenges blitzscaling across so many different business areas -- especially with Model 3 production and their solar roof tile delays. Now I understand better why Elon Musk doesn't seem to care that much about perfecting product roll-out execution ahead of time, instead always thinking about the next futuristic revolution and then figure out the implementation as-it-goes. Coincidentally Elon Musk was also one of the founders of PayPal along with the author of this book. The book doesn't talk much about Tesla, but I can see the common philosophy. I can see why blitzscaling contributed to Tesla's success (so far).I take away a better understanding of why some companies engage in blitzscaling hyper growth as their #1 priority, and why this is such a powerful technique to overwhelm the competition. This book reveals some really interesting techniques to grow the customer base, organizational strategies depending on the size of the company, and management styles. There is good depth in this book with specific examples that the author curates for a course at Stanford University.Since there are a relatively small number of company founders/executives who have the funds to engage in a massive blitzscaling operation, I think most copies of this book will end up in these hands: 1. stock traders (including the everyday investor) who are looking to identify companies that are executing hyper growth strategies for better investment returns, and 2. people who enjoy reading interesting Silicon Valley business cases for insight on how this mysterious world of venture capital encourages companies to risk it all-or-nothing and take off like a rocket ship.Overall I highly recommend this book to learn the benefits of blitzscaling. It's very interesting to read, it's sometimes hard to put the book down because there's something useful on every page. Just don't expect much depth about companies that attempted blitzscaling and failed while trying, this book is more about success business cases.

Given the author's experience, I was disappointed to find Blitzscaling little more than a beginners overview of the well-known patterns around modern fast-growth companies. If you've never heard of Network Effects, Moore's Law, or Viral Effects, then you will find this an enlightening book. It explains these concepts and others like them quite well, but there is not much here that's new or especially insightful. The best use for this book would be in a community college course titled "Basics of Software Company Growth."

I'd bet almost everyone senior in Silicon Valley has come across Reid in their career. He's an indispensable member of the ecosystem as investor, operator, mentor, and thought leader. This book shares his gathered wisdom on the scaling of hypergrowth organizations in a fast-changing present to win the future. Not only essential reading for startup execs, but also for general business folks who need to grapple w/the role of technology disrupting their business.

There are some excellent management insights regarding blitzscaling your organization touching critical areas such as management innovation, business model innovation, and hiring practices. However, the rest of the book is less practical. By that I mean the book includes general advice, higher level talk or unpractical arguments on important issues regarding blitzscaling such as social responsibility, addressing the competition which also can use blitzscaling, resource management etcetera. However, as mentioned above, these areas are touched on a high level and fail on giving practical examples of how these tips and tricks are used in reality. I am sure the authors will follow-up with a practical guide but until then I give it a 4 star.

If you win, efficiency isn’t that important; if you lose, efficiency is completely irrelevant.”The book discusses many of the most well-known, fastest growing and currently most valuable companies, including: Airbnb, Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn/Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Uber and others. A couple years ago when Uber was raising money at a $60 billion private valuation, it may have been difficult to understand the astronomical valuation, but Blitzscaling presents a solid argument for it. If Uber uses inexpensive capital to subsidize both sides of the market when it enters a new city, it has a substantially stronger likelihood of quickly capturing significant share. Uber has a chicken and egg scenario as both sides of the market need to be built simultaneously for Uber to be successful. Uber needs to recruiter drivers to ‘supply’ rides, needs to acquire customers (‘demand’ for rides). By utilizing economical capital to subsidize drivers (paying drivers a higher percentage or bonuses as additional incentives to join the platform) and subsidizing passengers (with cheaper rides to incentivize them to try the new platform), Uber achieves massive momentum from dual-sided network effects.The story of Airbnb is fascinating, and an area that can easily be overlooked is how customer-obsessed they were from the very beginning. “Paul Graham, the cofounder of Y Combinator, wrote a famous essay in which he advised entrepreneurs to do things that don’t scale.” This advice may seem counterintuitive (especially in a book about Blitzscaling), but it is vital to developing an optimal product. When your business is small you want to can into a customer’s complete experience to understand everything the customer thinks and desires. Airbnb realized that listings are more successful if they are accompanied by professional photographs, so founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, in the beginning knocked on customer’s doors to photograph their homes. Obviously, the founders could not personally scale to photograph all Airbnb listings, but it allowed them to truly get to know and understand their customers (listen to Brian Chesky’s fantastic talk on Reid Hoffman’s Master of Scale podcast titled Handcrafted. Amazon’s substantial access to capital through inexpensive public funds as well as generated revenue allowed it to build out its massive infrastructure and best-in-class fulfillment systems. Throughout the years, Amazon was constantly criticized for not consistently showing ‘Wall Street profits’ while it utilized these inexpensive funds to subsidize its distribution and logistics expenses, as well as the fees it charged third-party sellers, to capture an astonishing portion of US online market sales. As someone who survived thyroid cancer, and its been 7 years since my total thyroidectomy -- This book was exactly what I needed! My sister heard Dr. Janet speaking on a radio interview-- and recognized all my health struggles!! She told me about Dr, Janet, and I immediately ordered the book! 7 years of Synthroid, after my thyroidectomy, and I have been absolutely exhausted, even though my endocrinologist and my thyroid surgeon keep saying my numbers are perfect. Dr Janet gives the reader information about the adrenals so crucially linked to thyroid issues. While my endocrinologist and surgeon did not think to question my adrenal function, my very wise OBGYN did diagnose me with adrenal exhaustion. She agrees with Dr. Janet, that Synthroid all alone is not the best thyroid hormone replacement. Dr. Janet recommends natural porcine thyroid hormone... although I am having great difficulty finding a doctor who will prescribe it for me. Everyone keeps saying the synthetic hormones Synthroid T-4, and Cytomel T-3, are "consistent" - where the natural porcine is variable from batch to batch. Also, with sugar levels, and adrenal exhaustion... Dr. Janet recommends eating food once one wakes up. I always did this before my thyroidectomy. I'm always starving and lightheaded once I wake up and want to eat. Since the surgery, all teh doctors told me to take Synthroid first thing in the morning on an empty stomach..and you can not have any foods or vitamins that contain calcium and iron (as they block Synthroid). If I could ask a question to Dr. Janet, it would be "How do you personally take your porcine thyroid hormone, since you do say to eat as soon as you wake up, if you have the adrenal issues? Do you also recommend taking the thyroid hormone on an empty stomach? Do you take it at mid-day? Do you divide the doses? and take two times a day?" Thank you Dr. Janet! I am still reading and re-reading, and taking notes! I am on a wait list to see a more flexible endocrinologist...praying I may be given a chance at Natural Thyroid hormone. Thank you!

I was looking for a clear, well written book about thyroid disease by someone who had gone through it and could offer some advice but... I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book just had too much emotion and drama in it to be valuable. Here and there I found some useful information, such as lists of symptoms for both thyroid disease and menopause, but overall, it was repetitive and kind of annoying to read. I would recommend Thyroid for Dummies over this book to get clear, balanced information about thyroid disease.

My whole family has been misdiagnosed for years,This will arm you with the information you’ll need to visit your doctor. I have Given the book to other individuals that I suspected May have thyroid problems, they are now visiting there doctors.Wanted to update this information on this remarkable book. I’ve given this book out nine times, still ordering more. Each and everyone has visited the doctors and been diagnosed with thyroid disease, One cases a little more serious. I also want to remind everyone this is not just for women. I walked into a party the other night and saw 21-year-old young man going bald and had digestive issues and a family history of thyroid Disease, (I promptly ordered another book for mom )He’s now on his way to the doctors.I would say in some cases this book has saved lives.

First, bad title choice. The title implies that the author is an MD, which is not the case. I was still willing to give it a chance, but later wished I'd browsed it in a bricks and mortar store before buying. I appreciate that the author went through extreme difficulties in her own thyroid experience, but there seems to be a bit of panic on every page of this book. There is probably good information in here somewhere, but there's such an edge of emotion to it all I found it impossible to read.

Very interesting guide to learning what Drs or Surgeons fail to tell you before taking your Thryroid glands. She graduated from Duke University, impressive her story. Recommended

Newest info on Thyroid and how it effects your whole body. Recommend for anyone with health problems, as they could be from an Undiagnosed Thyroid problem. Great list of required Thyroid lab work, that most Dr miss.

I really prefer Dancers Among Us, and not because this is "nudity". While this collection had some beautiful pictures, it was all very "pose-y" in comparison to the first collection because they insisted on covering genitalia. I would've loved to see the dancers truly uninhibited, but I suppose a penis or vagina aren't high brow enough. With everything so staged, I think Dancers After Dark just didn't have the same magic,

The book has a good concept, with dancers staged theatrically in front of architectural landmarks or interesting spots. The dancers are pretty average as dancers go. IF you are using it for references though, I would not pick this book because the lighting washes out the dancers bodies to look flat, and most of the pictures, in order to show the scale of the environment, make the dancers out to be very small in the picture. Other than that, the composition of the dancers is great.

Great book.Wonderful photos.Creative photographer and dancers.Amazing poses to 'expose' us to the art of dancing, dancing positions, diversity of dancers, diversity of scenes / places, ...Put out a second and third book for 'Dancers during the Day' or 'Dancers at Day Break', ...Love to see non-city alternative settings for a future book in other countries that USA and Western-Europe. NZ, Australia, Indonesia, Africa, Russia, Japan, ...Nice to see explanations of how the dancers were staged, prepared, lit, focus, cropped, ...My favorite is the woman dancer in CA coast at sunset - beautiful setting (beach / rocks / water), sunset colors, dancer pose and poise, ...

Even though the pictured dancers are in superb physical shape, it’s amazing none were injured while striking the athletic poses in, on and around the locations used in the book. Even more amazing, the often quickly-posed photos don’t reveal a single crotch, male or female!The photos are roughly half color, half black & white. Both work and reproduction is excellent. A number of photos are printed across the binding, but generally this doesn’t detract from the image – kudos to the art director. My only complaint, probably echoed by many buying the book, is that it’s too small. Howard Schatz’ similarly-themed “Passion & Line” is a majestic 11x14” and printed on heavy stock. “Dancers After Dark” deserves to be printed larger than a textbook.

Jordan Matter is insane. He is also brilliant, and he knows an awful lot of talented, beautiful, equally insane dancers. And he convinced them to go out into the streets of major cities with him, after dark, and strike stunning poses with no clothes on.They only had one near encounter with police, Matter said, and it ended well.I love this book so much. This is a photography book where it looks like EVERYBODY had fun.These images are amazing. People hanging from lampposts, playing in civic fountains, creating multi-person artistic formations under street lights, and all of it conveying the sheer joys of expressing yourself and getting away with it.You should also check out his site and his YouTube channel for behind-the-scenes videos of some of the shoots.

This is so much more than just a book of pretty pictures. Jordan Matter's photos come alive as you gaze at them; the sheer power of their beauty is mesmerizing. It is difficult to tear oneself away from one, only to be equally transported by the next. The imagination of the photographer, combined with the extraordinary physical qualities of his subjects and their environments, create an equation that is at once stunning and thought-provoking. I have just received this book, and have already spent much time reflecting on it: reviewing the compositions, the nature of the light, and the stark and splendid results that Jordan has captured.This book would be an amazing gift for anyone who dances, travels, appreciates beauty, moves, or even just breathes.

I had been watching Jordan's instagram posts for a while so i had an idea what i was in store for, but was blown away with the final results.Ordered the hard cover which comes with an ice sleeve as well. All the pictures are very well done, many are in NYC and many are overseas as well. The pictures are amazing and have a wide variety of scenes. Anywhere from sleek urban settings, to ice water in Colorado. Its also interesting that he time stamps the pictures, so in the city pics you have an idea what would be going on at that time.

A good first novel is refreshing, but the second is always a test of whether a writer is good or just lucky. "We Are Many" show that Taylor's Bobiverse is not a fluke, and that he is a writer able to capture the audiences attention. The plot elements are often a little hard to keep track of as the Bobiverse fragments and expands, but the stories are compelling, unique and have legs. I look forward to more, whether in the Bobiverse or elsewhere.

I honestly just wish it was longer.I found no problems with this book and can't dock it a star just because I want more.I recommend this book to those that love good sci-fi.

Bravo sir. This is a brilliant second book that left me looking at everything else in my reading queue and going "meh". It took me a couple of days to get around to actually picking up something else as I knew there was nothing else pending that would be remotely as good.As I just noted in my review of the first installment, the author has done an amazing job of crafting a story where the reader cares more about the Von Neumann machines than the people. While the people are an essential plot element they are very much secondary and far less interesting in spite of their being adequate fodder there for several conventional, and far less interesting, books.The evolution of the "Bobs" continues to be fascinating and the "Others" provides a necessary plot device for encouraging further growth in that community as the book progresses.I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

Loved it! Listened to it on audio and cannot recommend it highly enough. Audio is the way to go with this series. Ray Porter narrates it perfectly. He captures the essence of each and every "Bob" and delivers the humor in a perfect manner. The story is fun, funny, exciting and at times, even touching. I love all of the "Bobs" senses of humor. This is not a book to read as a standalone. You definitely need to read book 1 first, but that's not a hardship as that one is fantastic too.If you like your sci-fi with humor, I highly recommend this series. And I recommend it even more on audio. You can buy the kindle book and the audible version for less than $10 I think. That's a steal!

The first book in the Bobiverse was cute and spoke to the inner geek in many of us that wanted to explore, defend, and create. It was exciting, fresh, and extremely upbeat.This book explores the musty attic of the Bobiverse.There is more drama, and the tone is decidedly **darker**.Nothing is really resolved in this book either. Even the things that you initially think will be resolved end up being uncertain at best.That said, Dennis Taylor is a good writer, and the narrator is exceptional.I recommend this book if you *loved* the first book and want to see where Taylor takes the Bobiverse. If you felt the first book was "meh" then you will want to take a pass on this one. If you are new to the Bobiverse then I recommend that you read/listen to the first book before making any decisions about this one.** Beware Spoilers Follow **This book explores the neurosis of the Bobs. One Bob falls in love with a human woman. One Bob eventually commits suicide. One Bob plays God and becomes morose when rejected by the species he hopes to elevate. Some of the Bobs become sociopaths and refer to humans (and all biological life forms) as "empherials."You get the dark side of things. Clearly some of the Bobs want to experience life as a living, breathing, sensing creature again, and a lot is made of the android project.We meet the evil replicants from Brazil again, and the reader thinks that the Bobs have wiped out this threat when it is revealed that they will be "the 'Snidley Whiplash' twirling their mustache in every episode."The book further explores the Others. We first met their mega-ant-robots in the first book,but by the end of this book the Bobs have so annoyed the Others that they announce their intention to destroy Earth and the Bobs' primary colony stars. Quite frankly, the Others seem like a monolithic threat that the Bobs cannot possibly beat by the end of this book. There are some weaknesses though. The species has confined itself to one star system, and there is one central Queen without competitors. If the Bobs can devise a way to destroy the central hive then all will be well except for the annoying Brazilian shadow threat.All in all, I will read/listen to Book 3, but I was somewhat disappointed by this outing in the Bobiverse.

I really enjoy the book, the story is interesting, it is nice to have the story written from the perspective of an introvert. The only negatives I had had to do with the fact women are practically invisible, present only as minor characters in the form of love interests. All the important characters (even excluding Bob) are male. Also it would be interesting to have others participate in the decision making as the only decision making happens in the bobeverse. Finally the ecologically unsound decisions of eliminating fauna based on how much you like them or not, is rather jarring and aliens being 'evil' because they don't subscribe to our morality is also a bit odd. All that said, I enjoy the series and have already bought the next one.

Second book of a three book space opera trilogy. I read the POD (print on demand) trade paperback version which has nice paper and fonts. The author is promising the third book in the series late this year. I will purchase and read it.The Von Nuemann space ship probes captained by the Bob AI have multiplied into 40+ and have now explored over 100 star systems. Things have gone both good and bad. And the "Others" now know about the Bob probes and Earth due to their capture of the Chinese Von Neumann probe.The evacuation of Earth due to the fast moving ice age is not going well. The fifteen million survivors on Earth are slowly starving to death as the crops have now totally failed and all of the food is coming from orbital farms.
