The French influence in Vietnamese cuisine can be seen in such recipes as ba tê sô (an adaptation of pâté en croûte) and canh ma?ng tây cua (crab and asparagus soup). Success!We followed the recipes for ‘Banh Da Lon’ and ‘Banh Hoi tom Nuong’ this weekend and they came out beautiful and so tasty. We brought the ‘Banh Da Lon’ to share with our neighbors and they loved it. Their kids said it’s so good; a lot better than store bought. We ate the ‘Banh Hoi tom Nuong’ at our get together for Sunday football; so simple and delicious!Both recipes are easy to follow, great for small families or groups (2 to 4 people) and only take 20 to 30 minutes for each. One thing we did change: we didn't steam the ‘Banh Da Lon’ as long as the book recommended (10 – 15 mins) but reduced it to 5 minutes and it was ready for more layers. Maybe our gas stove burned hotter?We love this book! It's well laid out and beautifully designed. We bought a hard copy and also got a digital copy on Kindle as part of our Prime membership, which is convenient. Most of the recipes have pictures and details about the history and regional differences in preparation that connect us with our family traditions and memories of Vietnam.The book is indexed and includes a helpful ingredient and utensil guide. Recipes range from favorites like Pho and Spring Rolls to salads, deserts and main dishes. Highly recommended for those who want to learn to cook traditional Vietnamese dishes.

Great photos of the cooking steps! I've made 3 dishes and they were very good, restaurant quality! My neighbor is Vietnamese and when I made the Do Chua, I gave her a jar. She said it was very good.

This book is one of the best “cookbook” I own. The pictures on how to prepare Vietnamese dishes combined with an easy step-by-step text set on exactly two pages make it very easy to follow while one is in production mode. I have made at least 20 dishes so far and they all came out great. From crab noodle soup to layer cake, stopping by shrimp balls, all dishes were succulent. I was also able to use the Vietnamese spellings as shown in the book to obtain the very same ingredients in my local Asian specialty stores. But, do not be concerned, the majority of dishes do not require South-East Asia sourced ingredients. I also liked the remarks at the end of many recipes that tell you about Vietnam, its culture, its traditions, and, in the end, the meaning of it.

I LOVE this book. It's great for a novice to this type of cuisine. The photos are so helpful--great text book, cookbook. Very well done; very worth the price. Plus, this book has a very thorough "ingredients and Utensils" section, also with pictures, as an aid to finding and understanding those things. This glossary is helpful for all types of Asian cooking.

Great book with interesting pictures and anecdotes. But, unless you live in a very urban area, you will be searching on line for the ingredients. Fairly advanced Asian cooking.

I am a Vietnamese woman, who grew up eating Vietnamese food on a daily basis. But after I married, American food became the norm and Vietnamese food became a treat. But there are certain dishes that restaurants rarely provide, mom used to make, and no matter how much I tried, I wasn’t able to duplicate the old flavors. I tried a few recipes in the cookbook and found the missing flavors. I finally found some of my mom’s tricks in this cookbook. The recipes in the book are authentic, the kind that mom used to make and we used to dream about. I can’t wait to try the rest of the recipes

This cookbook is the most sought-after recipes that you will find on any Vietnamese food establishment. I mean I learned a lot about how Vietnamese cook and used local and even authentic ingredients. I am so glad I bought this book at a local B & N Booksellers in San Jose, CA. I just cannot imagine these recipes in the book are so simple, but some require more time to prepare. Most you will find them on the streets in Vietnam. Then I found a recipe for Layered Cake at the Desserts chapter, Mmmm... this is pretty easy and found that this recipe only requires 4 to 5 ingredients - coconut milk, pandan leaves, tapioca starch, water, and sugar. But you need a steamer and some food grade molds to produce this dessert. Then how Pho is made can be quite simple.It has also a glossary of ingredients used in all of the recipes.This book is well laid out, and recipes are really delicious if you attempt to cook them. It is also convenient that Amazon sells the Kindle version.

The recipes in clearly written, don't require an extensive list of specialty ingredients, and the ones I've made have been delicious and while its not meant to replace the Instant Pot user's manual, the directions are specific enough that I could set the Instant Pot correctly without referring to the manual, despite never using it before and the ingredient list and cooking directions are super clear and easy to understand, which is a big deal since the different models of the instant pot have variances in what we see on the front panel buttons and this book covers all the details.Thanks for another great tool for the ketogenic journey!

While reading "Ephphata," I couldn't help but feel the love Dr. Thomas Caulfield and his wife Jen have for both their children. Christopher's disability turned out to be something that helped them grow closer together, and push Christopher to find something he really enjoyed doing.While it could have been a sad story to read about young parents having to surmount every trial dealing with their son's deafness, Caulfield's work (which comes from two decades of journals), is instead so positive and uplifting. This is what a parent struggling with aligning their wishes and realities for their children needs to read. The Caulfields' experiences dealing with surgeons, teachers and coaches was informing and helpful.I loved how the sports experiences in soccer, baseball and basketball were interwoven, and really become the focus of the book in the middle to end - really making it something that reads like a feel-good movie. Christopher's deafness really isn't the focus of his life, which it shouldn't be.As a parent who is constantly watching two of my children struggle to keep up with their peers both socially and academically, this book was so empowering for me to read and internalize. Thank you for being an inspiration Caulfield family.

From the moment I read the cover of this book, I knew that I would relate to the story in a profound way. I am a mother of three beautiful children, two of which happen to be on the Autism Spectrum. My experience of motherhood (& my husband's experience as a father, too) has been completely shaped because of the natural needs of my children, and I often wonder what their lives will be in the future. Similarly, Mr. Caufield details the journey of fatherhood that his own child's specific needs had created for him in an open and honest way. Not only does the book detail the child's experience from the parent's perspective, but it also shows a father's hopes, fears, and prayers for his son in a painfully vulnerable way. I loved it. I laughed and cried, seeing myself and my children from almost an outside perspective after completing this book. I really truly recommend this amazing story!

I was drawn to this book more than others at the moment because my daughter is studying American Sign Language (she is hearing) and part of her class is to also learn about those profound leaders in the non-hearing community that opened (and, in some cases, blow apart) doors and made unthinkable strides. Each biography we've encountered has given us goosebumps, filling our hearts with respect and admiration. I'm delighted to say that Christopher Caulfield's biography, penned by his father via documenting his life, obstacles and achievements, is no different. As I read Dr. Caulfield's accounts, I felt saddened at the moments that Christopher and his parents (and sister) were disheartened and I felt overwhelming joy when I could be part of. This was a very moving story... It really is not for the faint of heart. This book leads you through the lives of Christopher and his family on his jourrney through his disability of being deaf. I appreciate Dr. Caulfield's fore thought in saving this journal for his son and then sharing this with us all... It really is a remarkable story. I wanted to cry at some parts for the pain and trials but there were also parts I wanted to fist pump. This story runs through all of your emotions. I thought this was well put together and was easy to follow. It pulled me in rather quickly. Very touching read

When I learned about this book I had to jump on it. My father was deaf so I was around that community my whole life. I'm hearing, my fingers think I'm deaf though lol. Christopher story is amazing, what his parents dealt with in and out of schools, games, home life. Any child we have we struggle with decisions on are we doing this right... what Tom and Jen did was grab ahold of their whole family and decided together what would happen.This book shows just part of their struggles but also their victories.I had the honor of reading an advanced copy, and loved every second of it

I bought this for my son to go with his first airbrush. After scanning through it I found it to have good info. A nice base for the beginner. He read it and said he learned a lot. It gave him the confidence to pick up the gun and start airbrushing.

Great information for the beginner just getting started. The airbrush sets that you can buy generally have very brief and very poor instructions. It's like they expect that you already know how to use one and don't need any instruction.

This book is amazing. Took the HL IB biology exam this year and was afraid that this book wouldn't prepare me well enough because its an older edition but boy was I wrong. It covered all the material that was on the exam and even provided the specific studies that were mentioned on the exam too. It's the perfect review book in my opinion. Covers SL material and goes more in depth towards the end to cover the HL topics too. Definitely does not teach any concepts (no explantation). A great book for review but not necessarily re- learning things. The material is very concise and gets straight to the point with a few practice problems at the end of each chapter to help lock in what you just learned. My only regret was that I didn't get to finish the entire book before taking the exam so make sure you give yourself some time prior so you can go through this entire thing!!

I'm a parent and bought this book because my kid was struggling to transition to the IB way of testing i.e. not just finding the answer on a multiple choice sheet like the AP classes she previously had taken. Her first quiz in IB Bio HL she got a 50!I bought this book for her and she loved the concise way the information is summarized and felt it really helped supplement what they were learning in class. She put in a lot of time and effort and made a 100 on her next quiz and a 96 on her first unit test. So I would say this is a very helpful book.

Teen taking her IB exams said this was a necessary supplement. She got rid of a lot of other study aids, she is keeping this for college.

Really condenses the material down which is a huge help considering there is such a vast amount to understand and memorize for the HL Biology exam. If you've been diligent throughout the course work already, going through this starting about a month or so before the exam will be invaluable. I felt pretty confident about my exam thanks to this guide.

This is a lifesaver for IB bio. Every topic and sub topic is nicely condensed into one page little reads with the needed diagrams and facts. Will be perfect for studying for the final exams. Slightly thinner than the actual bio text.

I ordered this novel from Amazon because I wanted to read something about naval warfare in Roman times. I wasn't disappointed.First, it was an action packed novel. I can't say I couldn't put it down, but it actually was never down for very long. I made short work of reading it.If you're interested only in blood and gore, this might not be your novel. It had plenty of battle scenes, i.e., mostly marines fighting marines on galleys. However, secondly, the text gives plenty of leading character development, so you know who is doing the fighting. This novel was well written and interesting. I came away from it with a better understanding of galley warfare in ancient times. It was also read a very interesting and well developed read.I believe I read some critiques which knocked this author for straying from the strict reality of history. To be honest, I haven't read that much history about the Romans and Carthaginians in Sicily. I figure that if historical incorrectness doesn't slap me in the face and I enjoy the read, I don't care about that. It seemed to be historically correct to me. And I enjoyed the read greatly.If you want an interesting and action packed - and realistic sounding - novel about Roman naval warfare, I'd suggest that this is a novel for you.

First time reading this author, I was totally impressed with the story. I've always been a fan of Naval Warfare, but not much has been written in this time period. I believe the author captures all facets, of the period. I will definitely purchase thet next installment of the story.

I don't usually care so much about accuracy in a historical novel as long as the history is reasonable and the story is good. But Ship of Rome fails the accuracy test spectacularly, butchering both the broad outline of the 1st Punic War and the details.1) The first and biggest problem is that the very premise of the novel is all wrong. In the book, the Roman legions on Sicily would wither and die as a result of a naval blockade by Carthage. This forms the basis of the entire book. However, ancient navies of the time couldn't blockade a single city much less an entire island like Sicily. This is because ancient fleets had to put to shore every night to camp. They couldn't carry food/water for their crews. In order to maintain a blockade a fleet would have to have an anchorage nearby (which Carthage did not have near Messana, the Roman port in Sicily) and even then could not spend enough time on the water to make a good blockade. Prior to the Romans building a fleet they took armies into and out of Sicily at will, making the trip from Rhegium to Messana w/o interference. The real reason Rome needed a fleet was to conquer the Sicilian port cities which remained under Carthaginian control because they could not be successfully besieged due to their ability to be supplied by sea indefinitely (which they were later able to do anyway despite Roman naval efforts). Carthage could hold out forever in theses cities, and reconquer the island when the Romans left.2) So in the book why doesn't Carthage just blockade Messana? Well, Stack obviously considered this, so he made the only Roman port Brolium and makes little mention of Messana. Brolium apparently is like a secret port. Carthage doesn't know that Brolium is the Roman port. This is highly contrived. The Roman port in Sicily was Messana. Where did Brolium come from? It's not mentioned in any account of the war.3) He has numbered Roman legions, as if they are permanent military organizations. At this time, they were citizen levies, raised for a specific purpose, then disbanded. Probably to accommodate his clichéd "band of brothers" storyline with the main characters.4) Rome's treaty with Syracuse is treated as a kind of non-aggression pact. He has a Roman army stationed near Syracusan territory to keep Syracuse in check. In fact, Syracuse had become a loyal ally of Rome and was bound by treaty to come to Rome's aid whenever needed. This is exactly what Syracuse did during the Siege of Agrigentum by supplying the Roman armies when their supply source had been captured by Carthage. (Another example of how Rome was not dependent on Italy to supply its armies. Why would it be? Rome had allies among the entire interior of the island as well as Syracuse--it was hardly isolated in the middle of enemy territory.)5) Characterizations are too broad and cliché. Gisco is cartooniishly evil. Scipio is cartoonishly haughty. Atticus is cartoonishly honorable. Etc, Etc. Gisco actually comes off like Blackbeard the pirate.6) Has the appearance of a Carthaginian fleet off northern Sicily come as some kind of revelation to the Romans, as if they didn't know Carthage had a fleet. This news is greeted as something ominous and momentous when in fact in reality Carthage had already been raiding the coast of Italy prior to the time of this book.7) Stack says repeatedly that the rowers on board the ships were chained slaves. Neither side used slaves as rowers.All of this stuff is easily discovered by reading ANY book on the subject. I didn't come to know these things through a lifetime of study. I read a single book on the subject 15 years ago. To Stack's credit, he tells a good story, but the obvious lack of research makes the book of little value to the reader of historical fiction.

Ship of Rome kept me glued to my Kindle. It's a great book for anyone who loves historical fiction. I'm looking forward to the remainder of the series.

Ship of Rome, knocked my socks off. John Stack has exceeded my expectations for a new author writing in the genre similar to Patrick O'Brien, Bernard Cornwell, Edwin Thomas, Michael Curtis Ford and Steven Pressfield. The time is the early Punic Wars where Rome battles against Carthage. Most of the story takes place on the high seas with riveting edge-of-your seat action and suspense as the two enemies of war slaughter for the win on the sleek and powerful trireme ships manned by hungry strong slaves being whipped into action. Two tyrannical egotistical ship captains are more than eager to ram, and sink each others fleet of warships causing nothing but death and destruction. The battle scenes and military strategies mixed with an incredible ability to put human feeling and emotion into the personalities of the characters on both sides of good and evil, showed great new writing skill. To input political intrigue amongst the senators in the forum of ancient Rome, added with a little romance and background history of Rome and Carthage, puts John Stack high on my list for buying the next installment of this new series called Master of the Seas. I read this book in one day, I thought it was so exciting and well written, and actually found it to be better than some of the other authors in this category of historical fiction. This is sort of a Ben Hur meets Gladiator story that any serious historical fiction reader will devour quickly and highly enjoy. Bravo and more please!
