I have been looking for a book to help explain to my eight year old daughter exactly what we mean when we say she has autism. We don't normally talk about it much. She has her things she is naturally good at and things she has to work harder at, but such is being human. However, her school is doing a number of things for autism awareness month and I thought a book might help, so I perused this one at our library.There are a number of things this book does really well. It explains the basics of autism clearly at a child's level, but even older kids could read it without being talked down to. Explanations are simple and straightforward. The illustrations are generally well done, especially one of what looks like a child stimming (hand flapping, if I remember correctly). There is also a little bit of discussion about what a child with autism might be especially good at. But after reading the book, I thought, "Well, this might be good for siblings or classmates, but I don't really want my daughter reading it."The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I wasn't sure I wanted siblings or classmates reading this one, either. My main objection to this book is that I don't want my child to feel bad about herself or to be an object of pity. My daughter thinks she is awesome, because she is. I am concerned that this book could introduce some doubt.The book is clearly aimed at neurotypical children. I get that. But must some behaviors that these NT children might see be described as something they might find "strange"? Maybe could we talk about being "surprised by" or "curious about" said behavior? And several of the drawings depict children with autism looking extremely sad, hunched, and pitiful. Sorry, that doesn't jive with how I see my kid or how she sees herself, and I am not going to introduce that idea to her or anyone else.Overall, this book has a lot going for it, but I can't unequivocally recommend it. I like the information, but would have preferred a more neutral presentation.

I should’ve listened to the other review of this book. It has a very negative tone to it, and points out all the differences, and makes no attempt to find common ground between those with Autism and neurotypical children. Many of the pictures depict a “sad” child with autism and the others happy and playing. Although I don’t like the negative language in the book, the fact that it is very detailed about some typical behaviors that you might see in a child with moderate Autism could be helpful when discussing differences in a classroom. I was planning to read this to my preschoolers for Autism Awareness month, so it wasn’t what I was looking for. I liked “Because We’re Friends” much more, so that’s the one I would go with!

I work at a childcare center and my grandson has autism. I got this book so the children in his class can understand what he is going through. I think it is a wonderful book!

One of the books I purchased in april to bring awareness to my autistic son(s) and his school. The book was read to the entire school. He was 6 at the time and the book is so clear and yet so delicate in a matter of bringing those connections to their brains about Autisim. He made such powerful eye contact with me during the book and had a fear in his eye only I could understand. He then asked me after if he had autisim. I asked him if he identified with the character and he replied yes. I admitted to him that I did too. 💙

I bought this book for my children(6 yrs, 4 yrs, 9months) after my 4 yr old was diagnosed. When we received this book I hadn't discussed autism with any of them, and I was hoping this book would help teach them about autism.My 4 yr old ASD child didn't even make through the first page before he was wandering the room. But, after we were about 2-3 pages into the book my 6 yr old looked and me and said, "Mom, my brother has autism." I asked him why he thought that I and he said because his brain works differently.this book was a good starting point for talking about autism and learning a little about autism for small children, much better thanMy Brother is Autistic (Let's Talk About It Books). I will read it to my youngest when she is a little older as well.

I love this. I have three daughters, ages 8 1/2, 7 1/2, and 5. My oldest is autistic. My middle daughter has struggled the most with patience over the last few years as she gets older. Autism has been a constant her entire existence and for longer than the youngest’s. She loves to tell anyone when she’s introducing her sister, “This is my sister, ****, she has autism.” Lol. And she kind of knows what that means, but not really...This book is going to be amazing for my younger two. And help teach them ways to spread the understanding for their sister.

This was for my granddaughters, one has ADD/ADHD and high end Autism. They where really excited about reading the books. Her sister said I really love this book because now I understand my sister even better.

My 7yrs old has autism and I purchased this book for his classroom. The teacher read it to the class and they talked about autism. It sounds like it was well received by the kids and that they enjoyed learning more about my boy. I'm hoping they show him a little bit more patience, he scripts and repeat a lot and I'm hoping they understand it better now. I read it myself with my boy and I found it very well written. My little boy really liked too!

I am familiar with this author, yet even still these stories left me with my jaw dropped. Seriously, it defies description, which points to the author's skills, bringing this amazing story together. I know the content to be legit and the style and sequence are strong. There were also a lot of great links for reference. I will just wrap up by saying that I could not put this book down and finished it in one day, which has not happened to me in years. I was thrilled, as I indulged into a story and a life I would not dare to lead myself.

After spending several years in a Colombian prison, Chris finds himself exiled without a passport in Colombia where he still teaches English today.Along the way Chris introduces us to large cast of local Colombians, from tramps to major players in the booming 90s drug scene. Chris is brutally honest about some of his low-points, which include attempted murder, rape, and theft.

This book is hard to put down. You'll want to keep reading in order to find out what happens to Christopher Kavanaugh, an interesting and complex man who simply wants to enjoy life and get 'mad outta his head'. From Ireland to Colombia, the adventure and danger never stops.A side benefit to this book is that I learned a lot about the Colombian culture and its history.

I had read a few excerpts of this biography but none of it prepared me for what is within the pages. The life of the Mick is one that needed to be told and gives an amazing account of 70's - 80's Irish underworld culture before diving deep into the crime-riddled Colombian lifestyles of the 80's - 90's. Really, truly fascinating.Well written and thoroughly fact checked with excerpts from newspapers to back up the Mick's claims. It's a wonder the guy is still alive.Highly recommended!

This book follows the life of an Irishman named Christopher, which can only be described as "unbelievable". Christopher endures hardship after hardship - much owed to his own choices - in this captivating story of what life is really like living in the crime and drug-ridden underbelly of South America. I read this book in three sittings because it was so hard to put down. This is not my typical genre of literature, yet I'm glad I didn't allow that to keep me from giving it a read. Highly recommended!

For an unbridled romp through contemporary Colombian history and using Christopher Kavanagh as the spine of this almost unbelievable tale, look no further. Drugs, murder, prostitution and all seen through the eyes of the affable and otherworldy irishman is unlike anything you will have read before. Highly recommended.

Just spent three weeks in western Turkey. This guide helped me better understand and appreciate the ruins and mosques I was seeing and also guided me to places I may not have gone. Great drawings showing layout of most of the popular sites to visit. Used some of the hotel and restaurant suggestions, and they were as described. Istanbul map on back pages was a great help when using public transportation. Also used the maps at the beginning of each section regularly to plan my day and then to figure out where I was when I inevitably got lost!

This is a beautiful guide book, with amazing photos and maps. Unfortunately the information on Cappadocia and Ephesus was very light. Also, it is surprisingly heavy. It's a great book for Istanbul and an overview of the rest of the country, but not something that is practical for carrying around all day.

I love the DK Eyewitness guides for study before I go on a trip and then again for when I return home to scrapbook and journal my trip. I love all the color pictures but often don't take the book with me on my trips. The main reason is because the quality of the book with all the color and paper quality make the book much heavier. I'll usually opt instead to travel with the smaller DK Top Ten books which usually include maps.

Eyewitness books simply rule - great photos, great diagrams, great information... a must have for someone traveling independently around Turkey. Now, the ebook version? Complete garbage.

Beautiful, a good, quick study, and will be nice to have after the trip as well. As expected from DK. One huge disappointment: I thought there'd be a detachable map of the country, but no. The DK Istanbul book as a waterproof detachable, foldout map of the city; I assumed the Turkey book would have a similar map of the the entire country. There is only a color-coded map of the country in the front endpage. Great to have the detail maps, but I think there should be a country map as well. It could be half the country on each side. Why isn't there?

This DK book is really well done with amazing pictures as well as useful information. Highly recommended.

I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide as I travel a great deal and I always buy these travel guide book prior to me traveling to that destination. Like last year I went to Morocco and several months prior to going I bought the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to Morocco. I use it to read about that destination. They are VERY informative!

DK is our favorite travel guides for the history sections, photos, and quick references on main sites. This isn't the book you get if you want to find 1000 tiny sites or that random restaurant or hotel. This is more for the quick guide to a city in 3-5 days.

The arrangements are great, however, several songs are duplicates of what are included in the basic series Lessons book. That is my only concern and why I did not give it a 5-star rating.

Didn't realize I enjoyed Jazz & Blues until I started playing these pieces.

Great selection of jazzy and bluesy songs for the standard level 3 piano student. Any Bastien, Alfred, or Faber level 3 student would be able to play these with practice. Each song would be a one or two lesson assignment at that grade. Could be suitable for a Level 2 student recital, but would take much work. Songs incorporate pedal use, jazz rhythm, and syncopation. Many of the songs are arrangements of well known songs. The arrangements are well done and do not sound as "empty" as many of the beginning jazz books tend to be.

I love Jazz Music and this book has been fun to play and learn piano with.
