As an Adult relearning the piano after 30+ years, I purchased 4 different Piano instruction books from Amazon to get me going. This was by far the best. The book is spiral bound, so it lays flat on the piano music sheet holder which is really important. The book introduces a bit of music theory and knowledge on every other page or so - which helps a lot in understanding the other parts of the music besides learning notes. There is a wide range of music to learn (classical, popular, blues, etc) at just the right level at the right time, getting progressively more difficult as you work through the book. It took me about 1 1/2 months to work through the book and I rate it as excellent instruction for anyone wanting to learn or re-learn the piano.

A little background before I get into the real review: My 14 y/o trumpet player daughter has been wanting to learn the piano for years. Because she has C.P. we had been putting it off thinking that trying to coordinate both hands at once and read music would be too frustrating for her. Her trumpet teacher disagreed and recommended she start with the Suzuki method as she has and incredibly good ear and quite a bit of natural musical talent. From my understanding of Suzuki, there is quite a bit of parent involvement required. This is a problem for me given I have limited experience playing an instrument (flute. I really should have listened when my mom said I'd regret giving it up) and absolutely none with the piano. I bought this book to help rectify that, knowing that I'll be sitting in on her weekly lessons and absorbing a lot of information there.Having only had the book a couple of days, I love it already. The book assumes you are coming to the piano with no prior musical experience and starts from the very beginning. It introduces the musical alphabet and shows where each note falls on the keyboard. When reading from the staff is introduced, the note names are printed right in the note so your eyes are traveling along the staff instead of looking elsewhere. With each lesson on theory you are given exercises and practice tunes that reinforce the lesson. There are also written exercises to really help make those connections solid. You move along fairly quickly, playing simple melodies with each hand separately to playing with both hands. Once harmonic intervals are introduced (pg.26) and you start playing the melody with one hand and harmonics with the other, you really feel like you're making music! It's pretty exciting to go from not knowing where middle C is located to playing Jingle Bells with a bit of harmony in 2 days! I can't wait to continue to grow with this book.I do plan on adding scales and such to my practice sessions, as these are truly the things that will help you progress and give you a more fundamental understanding of how music is put together. Playing scales and arpeggios are just as important to a musician as stretching is to a runner. They may not be the most fun, but they are essential, which my daughter hates to hear.Some have said that the song selection leaves a bit to be desired. While I don't disagree that songs like "Tisket, A Tasket", "Lightly Row", and "Aunt Rhody" are juvenile, (these are the songs all young musicians start with. The Good Lord knows I've sat through many a squeaky beginning band performance of them!) they are the type of song that build that foundation for the great things to come. By the time you finish this book you should be able to play songs like "Over the Rainbow" and "Singin' in the Rain". You can also find loads of simple piano music online for free and there's always the option of purchasing books of beginner music if you find that you're board by the selections provided.Also be aware that this book does not come with the c.d. Not really a problem as there are loads of nice folks who have uploaded videos to youtube of all the songs. Just search for Alfred's Basic Adult Piano and you'll have your pick.All in all, I really am enjoying learning with this book. I feel like I'm able to grasp the concepts that are introduced and will be able to help my daughter along once her lessons start in a couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to finishing this book, which I hope will come sooner rather than later, and starting on the next one.

Good book. No CD, but Youtube is better than the CD anyway. Kindly people who play well have put all these pieces on Youtube, labelled, in order, corresponding to the book, played on a real piano, with no other instruments in the background. See for example those by Chanel Harris. You can buy the CD on Amazon, but reviews are not great. Apparently the CD is not a real piano and has synthesized other instruments accompanying and its confusing. Get the book. Use it with Youtube.

I'm in my 40s and wanted to start playing again after about 25 years away from the piano. The course is great and logically builds on itself as you proceed. I actually wish I had this when I played as a kid. Would have progressed much faster. I strongly recommend as someone with a little experience coming back to the piano.

Its been over 50 years since I last touched a piano (I’m 62). I play a little guitar, but my music reading ability had regressed to beginner status. I bought a keyboard and picked up this book based on good reviews. The first few pages looked very simple, but I decided I would read and complete every lesson, and I’m so glad I did! Having gotten half way through the first book in a week I realize I have learned things my piano teacher never did. I’m getting more comfortable reading music, and feel like as long as I stick with these books I will continue to progress. I am grateful to have found this All-In-One series.

It was easy to read, no the vocab but the font, the page space, and its point made the read enjoyable and applicable and definitely shed value to learn this mental state of really how to maximize your life be how to be truly, yourself at its..comfort. Youll get what i mean. It totally makes sense and im glad this book was taught me and gave me a new perspective to never forget.

I bought the book based on a segment I saw about the author on my favorite TV show, CBS Sunday Morning. I also saw the author's TED talk and found that interesting. The book I must admit, I found a bit disappointing. It seemed as though 90+% of the book was devoted to substantiating the science behind Ms. Cuddy's work but less than 10% on how to actually apply it. Overall, the book left me with the feeling of, 'is this all there is?'

I know Amy Cuddy's original research on changing body language to change your chemistry has been brought into question but I'm a believer. I've seen and experienced firsthand the benefits of power posing, positive mental attitude and reframing emotions (nervousness to excitement). I believe enough that not only did I buy the book, I bought a copy for a coworker who I'm coaching in the area of public speaking. She read it and had many take away ideas to improve her presence. I recommend the book for individuals who haven't yet focused on how they can improve their presence whether for public speaking or just around the office.

One of the most important books I've ever read. Any Cuddy is a remarkable author and researcher who has opened a world of insights in this powerful book. I've just finished my first reading, and instead of beginning the next book on my list, I'm going to read this one again. Highly recommended!!!!

I came late to Amy Cuddy's TED Talk, only having seen it about six months ago, but eagerly pre-ordered this book since I was intrigued by the ideas from Dr. Cuddy's research. While I'm glad I read _Presence_ and did pick up some interesting information, it felt as if the main principles -- standing in power poses to achieve confidence -- were already covered in her talk.The first 2/3 of the book is mostly a recount of research studies that show how the body can change our mindset. The studies that Dr. Cuddy cites were interesting and I liked reading them, but the nitty-gritty of how to implement these changes in your life were really only apparent in the two chapters before the final one (which just included stories/emails of people who had changed their lives based on seeing Dr. Cuddy's TED Talk).I had been hoping that this book would go into more depth about how to implement the poses. While interesting to read, if you've seen the TED Talk, this book won't offer much new information about how to power pose.

This is the most readable textbook I've ever used! I rented it for MBA coursework, but it's so good that I intend to buy it. It introduces the "what" and "why" of corporate finance decisions in a conversational tone, and it explains how financial policies interact with operating policies to result in a company's overall performance. Lately I've been taking this book with me to the gym!

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever come across. It was recommended to me by my professor, but I would certainly not recommended it to anyone. The language is hard to understand, repetitive, and boring. The topics covered seem to be out of touch with reality. The subjects are dealt with abstractly, and are not easily translated to real-life. I honestly don't think this book will teach or help me manage a real company.The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because it "covers" a wide range of topics.

I purchased this book because it was required for a "Finance for Lawyers" course that I enrolled in during my third year of law school. The book can ramble on at times, but devotes enough time to the basics that those without a financial background have the ability to "catch up" in the early portions of the book, before it becomes too daunting or confusing.Whether this book is assigned for class, or you just want some light reading on the plane, this book should do the trick.

Excellent subject matter coverage and readability, keeping in mind this is graduate level material.

It was suggested for students that may have had a hard time with statistics or accounting, as a tool that would make the information easier to understand! I purchased it and NEVER regretted it for one day, I also passed the class with a B when I went into it thinking " If I could just made a C I would be happy".

Highly entertaining, strong literary visualization and strong character development for this genre. The statistically improbable thus quite tedious incidence of gayness that characterized Saylor's earlier novels is absent. For most readers it is both tedious and distracting to feel the author wants us to believe nearly everyone was gay in the ancient world. That distraction was missing from this novel so I am hopeful it will remain absent for future novels. We buy these for a good yarn. It doesn't help the "suspension of disbelief" required to lose yourself in a good novel to wonder why the author wants to write about gay folks all the time in stories that have nothing in particular to do with sexuality.

Steven Saylor writes in the venue of SPQR series author John Maddox Roberts, mysteries set in the Roman era during the Republic, 1st century B.C.E. Saylor's main character, Gordianus of Rome, is a young man in this book, which serves as a prequel to the series. He travels with an aged philosopher-poet, Antipater, and they literally visit all seven wonders of the ancient world, solving mysteries along the way. If you love history, especially of the Roman era, this is an excellent series for you. I actually like SPQR's main smart-aleck character, Decius Cecilius Metellus, better than the rather stolid Gordianus, but the Finder will not displease and often delights you on his way to solving murders and intrigues in service of his detective profession.

Mr. Saylor has finally given us the start of Gordianus the Finder's career, describing a trip he took as an 18-year-old to see the Seven Wonders of the World. He is in the company of the aging Greek poet, Antipater of Sidon, and Mr. Saylor uses that as an excuse to trot out some of Antipater's surviving works. In form, the book is a series of vignettes loosely tied together by the backdrop of the emerging threat (to Rome) of King Mithradates of Pontus, a rarely mentioned important figure but one who is featured in The Last King: Rome's Greatest Enemy. On the whole, the journey is wonderfully satisfying both as a series of small whodunits, and as a travelogue/history lesson. I found Gordianus' view as a tourist in the ancient world quite charming -- indeed, I was taken by the image of these famous sites as tourist attractions back then -- and while the extensive details of the Wonders may not be everyone's cup of tea, I suspect Saylor fans will delight in them as I did. "The Seven Wonders" may not rank as Mr. Saylor's best, but it is very enjoyable and is an essential piece of reading for those who have followed Gordianus. The ending, in Alexandria, was a real treat ... you should know why.

Okay, I am just going to state baldly that I am a fan of the first water of Steven Saylor and the Gordianus novels. When the last book in the series was published I was in denial -- it took my son to patiently go over the ending with me before I could accept it. I have enjoyed the two books on Rome that Mr Saylor has written, and hope he has more in mind, but no one can take the place of beloved Gordianus the Finder."The Seven Wonders" can be seen as that most horrible of terms, a prequel. Several times throughout the series, Gordianus mentioned his trip as a young man to see the Seven Wonders. So Mr Saylor takes us back to Gordianus's eighteenth year, when he and his tutor, the elderly Antipater of Sidon, visit all seven. Antipater, for reasons immediately not clear, has faked his own death and is in disguise. The chapters were originally short stories published in various mystery magazines and other publications, and now put together in one book. Each story involves a mystery that Gordianus attempts to solve -- some are fairly easy ("The Statue of Zeus at Olympia," for instance), while others take a little more digging, and some luck ("The Widows of Halicarnassus"). We see Gordianus maturing, we are witness to his first sexual experience (for those put off by explicit sex, there is none "on stage," so to speak), and we see how Rome and Romans are viewed at that time in history (92 B.C.) by non-Romans. Yes, Gordianus is rather callow at some points, as he is only eighteen, but for those of us who have read the entire series we can see the promise of the man within the boy. And we know that he will be meeting someone who plays probably the most important role in his life at the end of the book.There may be some who are put off by the episodic nature of the book, but I think that is a minor flaw, and frankly it is in my view the only way the book could be written. It is a journey, a physical as well as an emotional journey, and it naturally falls into sections that deal with each step of the journey. Will there be more in this series? Only time will tell, but as there were time laspes between the setting of early books int he series it is quite possible that we have not seen the last of the beloved Gordianus.

An excellent novel by a writer who knows his ancient history, but also knows how to tell a good story without getting bogged down in details. It kept my interest throughout. Saylor's style and subject matter remind me very much of the ancient history novels of the late L. Sprague De Camp, one of whose novels concerned the building of the Colossus of Rhodes, and also involved a Celtic slave. Like De Camp, Saylor sprinkles his books with real historic characters most readers probably haven't heard of, who are interesting to find out about. You should definitely read the background information he provides at the end of the book to find out who they are.This is the first of Saylor's books I have read, but it won't be the last.

I paraphrase Gandhi's famous quote. If that isn't an indictment of modern Christianity, I don't know what is!This is a wonderful, inspiring, challenging and frightening book, but like previous reviewer Rebel Girl says in her critical review, it's not perfect, and it could have used some editing and fact-checking. But I still give it five stars because, for one thing, there are precious few books like this. For another, this gives us the personal stories of people who have actually decided to follow Christ with everything they've got. How rare is that?We have millions of Christians in this country who call themselves Christians and who pray and go to church and are 'good', but there are so few of us who have the guts and commitment to actually live our faith. To put ourselves on the line. To take a stand which might endanger us or alienate us from our own families and friends. Yes, the people profiled in this book are rabble-rousers, radicals, rebels and dangerous to the status quo. I admire them. I wish I had a fraction of their courage. I find their stories inspirational and hopeful.I would hazard a guess that many of the people in this book would not be voting for the GOP. But that is only my opinion.

Very inspirational for people of faith who do not often see models of Christian faith lived out through social activism. Useful. For social progressive activists to see examples of people of faith join in common cause to make our society and the world a better place.

I have been enjoying reading this much over-looked personal history of conversion and witness. I find the author's writing highly engaging -- lots of information, insight, combined with a focus and an energy that is wonderful. As a Plowhares activist who is briefly mentioned in this book, I was delighted to see so many familiar names. However, I'm learning there are many facets of the lives of other activists that I really knew nothing about. I have been enormously impressed reading the life of Roy Bourgeois, a friend since 1976, but with whom I have never had the chance to learn all the depth and breadth of his exceptional conversion and courage. And now, for speaking out for equality for women, Father Roy -- one of the few Catholic priests who amounts to anything -- is cast out. I hope this great book is read widely to awaken people to how damaging it is to have Caiphas lording over all the Scribes and Pharasees worldwide in the Catholic Church, conspiring against Christ once again.

Mine is a militant brand of atheism. Richard Dawkins is my favorite and I am quick to rise to the debate when religion gets involved. This book was so difficult for me because it riveted me with accounts of religious activists that I couldn't help but greatly admire. The first chapter alone made me almost cry on the subway. Twice. After spending literal weeks thinking about it, I've boiled down the intellectual change this book forced me to take.50 years ago if you asked an American, "How do you feel about black people?" You would have gotten a lot of sweeping generalizations. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the black person." Two months ago if you asked me how I felt about religious people I would have said, "A few are alright, but I think they're a little nuts." I now appreciate that the only correct answer is, "It depends on the religious person."In fact, let's talk about religion being the opiate of the masses. How do you feel about amphetamine addicts? Well, in theory, it seems like a bad idea. But Erdosh, a hugely important titan of mathematics, was only capable of being the brilliant man he was while he was on amphetamines. I wonder if a lot of titans of social justice are only capable of doing what they do because of their religious beliefs.
