It is been a long time since they explained in (US) High Schools esoteric concepts such as "noun," "adverb," "direct object,"... And, when you start learning Spanish (particularly college Spanish), you are going to be hit from day two by rules on how to use adjectives ("agreement" with noun in "genre" and "number"). You will be bewildered, distressed and in despair.This book is your savior. (Not your Savior, just your savior). It goes over every grammar item, shows how it exists and functions in English, and gives you a succinct explanation on how it works in Spanish. "A" students buy this book.Important note (which Amazon may remove): this book has been republished without significative changes for decades: every edition is as good as the others. If you can, get a used one, which you can get for pennies.

This book answers questions you might not even have known you needed answered. Great explanations of English grammar and how this relates to the Spanish language and Spanish grammar. The differences between Spanish and English are well described and there are many study tips for acquiring a functional knowledge of the Spanish language. For instance, the author explores how in English one can add various short words to change the meaning of the verb "look" (ie, to look for, to look at, to look into, to look after). However, in Spanish, each of those meanings is represented by a different verb (buscar, mirar, estudiar, cuidar). And then those pesky little words in Spanish (le, lo, te, se, su, mi, me, nos,etc) are explained in clear detail so one can begin to use them appropriately instead of guessing and plunking them in at random. There were some gaps in the language workbooks I've been using, and though I expect over time they would have been filled in, this simple, brief, and thorough book is giving me a deeper understanding and clear explanations now, while I am extablishing the foundations.

I absolutely love this book. It's not a workbook, it's a guide and an instruction. The approach is that it first teaches you the English grammar, then shows you how it's done in Spanish. This makes it all so much easier to understand. As a native English speaker, we are total experts on English grammar, but often times we don't *know* the specific rules and tenses and when and why we use them, things just "sound right" or they don't. So it's important to first understand your own language's grammar so that you can more easily understand how it presents itself in another language. I love this book so much that now that I'm going to try to pick up some Italian, I'm going to buy their other book, English Grammar for Students of Italian. These books are logical and well organized and a great reference. Highly recommended.

It has been a while since I have taken an English class -- or any language class for that matter. Now, taking a Spanish class my head spins when they say things like "present progressive" or "indefinite article". This book clearly explains all the grammar terms I need to know, with English rules and examples as well as Spanish rules and examples. It has been a major help in my study of Spanish.

This should be a requirement for all Spanish language programs. It's been the single most helpful resource for myself. Emily Spinelli is a genius. It would be wonderful if they created their own flashcard deck using the tips in the study suggestion portions. I would buy those.

Not the greatest book ever made for learning Spanish, but definitely a top ten (and I've been through hundreds).I love its no-nonsense approach. It is the bare essentials book on how Spanish grammar works.For me, I would compliment this with another book on words, usage, slang​ etc. and you would have something almost as good as a teacher.

Excellent guide for review of English grammar and a necessary tool for understanding Spanish grammar. Learning Spanish is much easier if you understand the grammatical structure of the language, which differs significantly from English. This book has helped me significantly.

This book gives the reader a refresher of English grammar (much of which you may have forgotten) and draws parallels to Spanish, making understanding verbs, objects, and pronouns so much easier. Even tho you have to order from third-party seed book sellers, the process was easy and quick.

Steven G. Rogelberg is Chancellor's Professor at University of North Carolina, Charlotte, for distinguished national, international, and interdisciplinary contributions. He has well over 100 publications and recently won the highly prestigious Humboldt Award for his research on meeting science. His work has been profiled in the Harvard Business Review, CBS News, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, NPR, Guardian, National Geographic, and Scientific American Mind, among others. In addition to his research and teaching, he consults for small and large organizations, including IBM, TIAA, Procter & Gamble, VF Corporation, Family Dollar, Siemens, and others. Steven Rogelberg's The Surprising Science of Meetings is a breath of fresh air among the myriad leadership and management books out there. That's because this book is based upon a solid foundation of social science, which then flows naturally into actionable recommendations. In my numerous conversations with executives and MBA students over the years, I've heard my fair share of complaints about meetings. I will certainly be sharing this book with them as a timeless resource. Readers will be pleased to find that the book has plenty of data to back up its main points, yet simultaneously offers key takeaways at the end of each chapter. The book also has a number of useful tools and quick references at the end, presented in an easy-to-use format that any leader could start using immediately. Highly recommended!

Steven Rogelberg has written a highly approachable, useful book aimed at making meetings more effective. The book clearly lays out why most people groan at the thought of yet one more meeting, and provides techniques and tips for improving meetings. I thought it was really important that these tips and techniques are based on years of research by the author himself and by others in the field, and that this research occurred in many different settings (e.g., lab studies, field studies, surveys, etc.). It's important to know that this book doesn't argue for a one-size-fits-all "prescription" for meetings, rather that there are things meeting leaders need to think about and do before, during, and after meetings that will help. I found a lot to like about this book, so it is difficult to pick a favorite tip, but the two chapters I find myself thinking about now having finished the book are the one on agendas and the one on remote call-in meetings. My department uses agendas for all meetings, but this chapter has given me ideas for improving them. And, increasingly, we find people want to call in to meetings, but this is rarely effective. If you lead meetings at your organization, you'll appreciate Rogelberg's book.

This book is excellent for two reasons: (1) it's extremely accessible... designed to make it super easy to pick up actionable tidbits to start making your meetings more effective, and (2) it's based on actual research, not just some joker's idea of what will "take your meetings to the next level." Dr. Rogelberg provides great examples, but not so many to make the book feel overly long or inflated. I love the "takeaways" at the end of each chapter, and the toolkit at the end of the book.

As someone who has been in the corporate minutiae of day to day meetings where I was sometimes lucky to get a 15-minute break over the course of a 9-hour day, Steven Rogelberg's book was practical, thought-provoking, and even had me laughing with its inserts of humor. By treating meetings as events (like a wedding) where one takes pause to consider others and their time and to think about the details, flow and experience, Steven begins to demonstrate how we can all make a huge impact on the modern work day. I appreciated how the book included a nice balance between science and practice, including valuable tools throughout and summaries at the end of each chapter. As a leadership development professional who has both lived in the daily world of meetings and coaches and develops executives, this is a book that will be on my list of recommendations to friends, colleagues, and clients.

As someone who both attends and leads a significant number of meetings each week, I placed a lot of hope in this book. It did not disappoint. Dr. Rogelberg calls out the need to evaluate and improve meetings, without diminishing their value. We need meetings to give team members voice and to enhance our decision making and implementation. This book highlights recognizable pitfalls (Parkinson’s law!) and provides a range of practical and reasonable tools to call upon to accomplish these goals without wasting time. I even gained insight into how I can be a better participant. Unexpectedly, it was refreshing to see some of the things my organization is already doing right – gold stars for food and laughter. This book needs to be on more shelves.

The Internet is full of conflicting and misleading advice on meetings. This book is a great source baked by research that you can trust. A must-read for anyone is regularly organizing meetings. And please, PLEASE cancel your next meeting that doesn't have any open agenda topics!

My son loves this book. No bad connotations, nothing to worry in regards to mixed or outdated messaging. Great book with good vocabulary for a learning reader (1st or 2nd grade for the most part).

I had this book for my kids when they were little. Now I am reading it to my grandkids. Lots of fun and it speaks to a good attitude.

It's okay, but not one of my favorite Dr Seuss books. I probably would not purchase it again, as much as I love Dr. Seuss.

A star studded cast of characters,...we see the young Christopher and David De Lohr, their pal, Marcus Burton, and Gart Forbes - Their adventures at times had me laughing till I cried!Our leading lady, Emera, well, she is lovely, as well as tough as nails! Resourceful, too, she will she use whatever she can to fight if need be...whether it be an ash shovel, a stick of wood, her fingernails ..whatever...she stands toe to toe with our Hero, Juston.He has been tasked by Richard to secure Bowes Castle, Emera's home. Juston does not take kindly to defiance, so, as you can imagine, sparks fly and the battle of wills is on! I loved the evolution of Juston and Emera's relationship... we come to understand why he is guarded, and cold...The plot flows beautifully. .with action, excitement, humor, and of course, a budding romance. An aspect of this story that I enjoyed, is that the reader gets to see how the mind of a Knight works in formulating battle strategy! That is so interesting, to me! I loved how you feel as if you are sitting in the feasting hall hearing the banter of the Knights, smelling the smoke in the room, feeling the warmth of the fire...it is amazing to me, how a writer can bring a story to life like this!I could go on and on about how truly amazing this book is...but you simply must read it for yourself to see! A book that you can't put down, a book that you hate to end - This is it! The Epilogue is just perfect, Le Veque deftly drew this beautiful story to a satisfying close. Grab a cup of coffee, or tea, a warm blanket, this book, and prepare to be swept away on a magnificent adeventure!

i have been disappointed of late with KLV writing and was going to stop reading her books. She seemed to be phoning in the stories and they didn't have the raw emotion she was known for. But, this one has redeemed her in my eyes.You could feel the rage and practically smell the blood that is how vividly she wrote this story. One of my favorites by this author is The Dark Lord, but this is close behind.The h was passionate in her beliefs and she had just the write amount of spunk to not come across as a "B". I loved her. The way the story starts will have your heart aching for H and you understand why he has the name Lord of Winter. It takes our h awhile to break through the frozen heart of our H and that was another reason I enjoyed this story. It wasn't an easy journey to thaw the heart of this knight.You get violence, villains a plenty, romance that builds slowly and with a rough road to HEA, but it does happen. It was great meeting the wonderful character's from her other novels, before they became the famous knights of those stories.This has so many layers that I couldn't stop reading because I had to know if certain people would survive. This is KLV at her best again, and I highly recommend it.We get mild lovemaking, and only once but you could feel the passion. The epilogue was an added bonus and brought a smile to my face. Everything is tidy up nicely, so no cliffhanger.I am not going into the premise of the story, just what I think you will get reading this.Thanks KLV for a wonderful journey with character's that will stay will me. After losing his wife and daughters to treachery Juston De Royans closes his heart and becomes cold and unbending. He becomes a war machine and wins many victories for Richard the Lion heart. After the siege of Bowes castle he finds himself with the beautiful Lady Emera and her sister as his captives. Sparks fly when he tries to claim the lady as his spoils of war. He soon learns that he has better luck taming her with sweet words than sour. Lady Emera soon melts the frozen heart of the Lord of Winter.I really enjoyed this book. Seeing many of Kathryn Le Veque's heros in their younger years was like a peek into their pasts. The great Christopher de Lore and his brother David, Marcus Burton and Gartner Forbes. She creates strong women who can hold their own against the company they find themselves in. I recommend this and any of her books to anyone who enjoys a tale of knights and their ladies.

I think I’ve finally got it!! After reading (and enjoying) every previous le Veque medieval romance, I finally see the moral thread that links them all. Each novel, singly, walks through a unique tale peopled with vibrant characters – strong heroes, tender heroines, venomous villains – through danger and conflict to a heartwarming resolution – good stories all. But, until this wonderful novel I never saw that moral thread. Set in a time of great restrictions on womankind, the same truth knocks at our consciousness, bangs at our hearts for recognition – women civilize men of war – then, throughout history since, and hopefully today in such uncertain times.The Lord of Winter is not only technically excellent, it is inspirational!

Lord of Winter is a story about Juston de Royans, a frozen hearted warrior after the traitorous death of his wife and daughters. Although once a loving husband and father, he no longer harbored much mercy. Juston is the liege of a young Christopher and David de Lohr, and Marcus Burton and Gart Forbes, characters we have come to love. Also making their first appearance are the Unholy Trinity, Max, Kress, and Achilles, which promises to become a series in itself in the future.Eight years after the death of Justin's family, he lays siege to Bowes Castle because Richard the Lionheart wishes it. There Juston meets Emera Le Marche. He considers her the spoils of war and she most certainly does not, so the battles of wills ensue.This is an emotional love story of grief, loss and strong wills to survive and the breaking down walls of self-preservation. I really enjoyed this book and strongly recommend.
